I was shooting at the range today and could hear some others nearby griping about my rifle's muzzle blast. It's a T/C Encore and I was shooting my .300 win mag barrel which has a Defensive Edge muzzle brake on it. I know they're kinda loud but when you're at the range which is under a roof and walled in, don't you kinda expect the high powered rifles to be pretty dang loud?? They quit griping about my rifle when the fellow with the .300 Roy with the brake showed up and sat down next to me. The first time that thing went off was the last I heard anyone complaining about my rig.
:chuckle:
What if I was shooting an ultra mag or something...
-
It's not so much the sound of it when you're sitting next to someone who has a rifle with a brake, it's the shock wave that hits you. It's really un-nerving when trying to squeeze off a shot and that guy lets loose with the braked rifle. I lose my concentration with one of those going off next to me and I will generally not shoot until that guy is done.
-
I waited till the guy next to me shot before I shot. He was joking around with me about it. Him and his .243
Anyway...I've been shooting that thing at the range for 3 years or so now with no complaints. Maybe I was on borrowed time.
:dunno:
-
I've heard that when I shot my 16" ar. Then someone shot the same gun next to me and I felt the pressure wave myself. :chuckle:
-
Eh, what did you say? i saw your lips moving but cant hear you :o, I have 2 rifles with brakes, dont seem to affect me and i am the person closest to it when it goes off. Although i have felt the shockwave from other guys rifles, even conventional guns.
What range did you go to, and was it full to the hilt with the one weeked a year hero's :chuckle:
I took my nephew to kenmore last weekend, we got there at opening, had the first round go with only 4 shooters, next round was fullup, had him wait 10 minutes after the shooting began for the guys around him to blast there shots off then he was fine.
-
I was at Kenmore and it was crowded.
-
I have an adjustable break on my 300 and wow what a difference it is when you open it up. Also. Blows the dust off the bench everytime.
-
The brakes usually direct off the sound/pressure off to the side and sometimes slightly back. Usually the shooter doesn't get the blast, but three or four feet to any side and it gets noisy.
-
Pull out the barrett and listen to em whine!

:chuckle: When they get back up......
-
The complainers should wear ear protection or not be at a shooting range............... :chuckle:
-
At the gun club I am a member of you cannot use a muzzlebreak.
-
So I've never done any research on muzzle breaks. Do they reduce recoil? If so were they made for women and children? People with frail builds? Office workers? Won't a "sissy" pad do the same thing?

blah blah blah nobody asked you. Were you at kenmore whining today?
-
I prefer not to shoot next to someone using a brake myself, pretty tough to concentrate with the guy next to you blowing your hat off with his SIDEWAYS directed muzzle blast.
-
3nails, the recoil pad isn't always enough. If you shoot a light rifle with a large case and a long barrel, it isn't necessarily the backward push anymore, but the 'jump'/muzzleflip. They are also good for protecting optics. The one I use has a 57% recoil reduction.

Thanks.
I can watch the target in the scope and never lose sight of it. Light rifle, hot hand loads, etc. The brake helps. I probably would not have added one, but there was already one there when I bought the rifle. I did change it out for a nicer one with cleaner gunsmith work.

:chuckle: No, I wasn't. I shouldn't joke because I'll probably need one as well one day when I can't sleep through the whole night without getting up to go pee. :chuckle:

lmao :stirthepot:

people used to look at me funny when i would shoot my plr16 at the range. loudest gun by far ive ever shot.

Some people should take up bow hunting.... :chuckle:

Heck, this makes me want to get one now, thanks. I always like impressing folks with a good muzzle blast. :chuckle:
-
well I found myself next to one of those ar type thingies in 223 I do believe...the muzzle blast blew around the thingamabob and floofed my hair and what was more fun was his shells pelting me.....I was under attack at the line....it actually was kinda funny.....
-
The looks and whining of other people is half the fun of taking a braked rifle to.the range. I like the blast. :chuckle:

lol yeah when I shoot with my dad he will kick empties at me to make me wait to shot mine cause its so loud :chuckle:. I dont know what it is about that gun but its twice my .338 win mag bark which I just dont understand, its got to be the short bull barrel.

we are still talking guns here right? :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

The thing that amazed me was the guys shooting the AR's and the 10/22's just raining emptys on the folks next to them. Loading mags underneath giant signs that say "Load one round at a time" then just banging away slinging brass all over the guy sitting next to them.
-

every range ive been to never had that rule. just no rapid fire being at least 1 sec per round

Muzzle blast, hot brass down your shirt....it just doesn't get any better :chuckle: a day at the range....actually sounds real good right now

It was a great day at the range. I figure the anti-muzzle blast crowd would have appreciated a little blast. It was muggy under that cover. A little breeze seemed to help.

I hate that rule they have there. Keeps me from taking my 10/22 there. Usually the rangemaster is very controlling...that was not the case yesterday and there was even 2 rangemasters working yesterday.
-
@Jackelope, you can load up to 10 rounds into a 22 without running afoul of kenmore's rules. For those that don't get the gripe with the brakes: a guy firing a braked rifle next to you is about the same as firing an UNBRAKED rifle about 5 feet behind you and five feet to either side.
I don't even like to shoot next to a guy with a braked PISTOL! It sounds like the damn thing is pointed right at you.
-
I dont get why people just dont drive out in the woods and find a good backstop to shoot privately.. Thats what I do most of the time. Last time I went to the range I came home looking like I had a hickie because the guy to the left of me got me with some .223 brass.. It was so hot it actually stuck to my neck I thought I got stung by a bee, and had to peel it off.. Big nasty blister. At least he let me shoot his nice Kimber 1911.. :) But yeah I only go to the range when I want to see how tight of a group I can shoot from a bench, or shoot skeet.. I like my privacy and the freedom to empty mags at whatever rate of fire I choose.
-
I usually get looks and overhear comments when I'm shooting my AR with a Surefire brake (and M193). I just smile. :chuckle: Hey, it's a gun range that allows all calibers and they do make a boom. I can understand the guy next to me trying to concentrate (been there myself), so I make some effort to time my shots with respect to those near by.
-
FC-
I'm not doubting or questioning you, but what's the point of all the big signs saying "Load One Round at a Time"?? I've even seen the usual rangemaster guy reprimand a guy for shooting more than one at a time in the mag.
I've been waiting for someone to complain about the brake I guess. I was also sitting in the last bench next to the wall for those that are familiar with the layout of that place. I guess sitting with a very solid wall a foot and a half to the right of the brake didn't help either. I usually sit next to someone else shooting a brake'd rifle if there is anyone so as to "blend in" a little but with the crowd yesterday, maybe I shoulda stayed home.
-

Ah, yes. Nothing like watching someone do the hot brass dance. :chuckle:
-

I don't go out in the woods to shoot this time of year out of respect for the folks that might probably be out there hunting. I've shot enough this year that I probably didn't "need" to go to the range, but had some free time and never really mind going shooting....anyway, thats my story.
-
I always pre warn people about the brake on my rifle also try to stay far enough away that it doesn't bother as bad if I can help it. I don't shoot the public range so I really dont run into too many problems. I've had people look at me funny when I shoot it but never complain but I wouldn't really care after all the precations I take and since we're at a rifle range where things do go BOOM!
-
Im planning to get one of those SSAR-15 buttstocks to allow shoulder fired controllable bump firing.. I know they wont like that at the range.. Especially in a carbine.. So Ill be out in the woods with that lol.
-
I prefer to go to the woods now. Crazy range rules, range costs, waiting in line to shoot, people muzzling people everywhere, people running down to get a target while the range is still 'hot', people trying to talk to you and wanting to play with your guns, and my new favorite--all the zombie talk (Die Zombie, Take That Zombie). The woods are closer for me too now.
-
Josh, maybe you should bring some extra earplugs for people who have to :'(
-
I take a quick look to see that everyone has ear protection on before shooting. Other than that they can deal with it. I pay to use the range too. Rifles are loud. They knew that coming to the range. I will let the tables next to me know beforehand though. So targets and whatever else doesn't go flying. Haha. I like my brake.
-
Its much more fun sitting next to the guy with a smokepole having that nice rotten egg smelling smoke in your face.
The way I see it go early in the season like July and on a weekday or expect crowds and deal with it.

For centerfire rifles they are usually real nazi's about the one round at a time thing but it states in their rules that 22 gets an exemption and can load 5 (either it got changed or I remembered it wrong) but they are still supposed to keep the rate of fire down. I don't shoot there very often as I find their benches horrifically uncomfortable (too short for me) and get tired of people pelting me with brass or shooting right next to me with a brake.
-
LOL - One year at the Range there was about 1 1/2 foot of snow on the roof - Every time I shot the .338 the snow would just fly off the roof - People couldn't believe it !

At the Evergreen range we shoot pistol in the same area as rifle...or did when I was going there so the whole rapid fire thing thats a new one to me :dunno:.....3 magazines 10 rounds each bang bang bang bang bang bang.......stopped and reloaded after blasting through all 3 or at one time I would have the 357 so go through 6 in it and a magazine in the 10/22....yeah I had some fun days at the range...no one running down range when hot no one really complaining about brakes etc.....was always a pretty decent crowd down there and the rangemaster was a good guy :dunno:
was where i learned a pushup bra and low cut shirt is a painful idea and not good rangewear....hot brass dance for sure :chuckle:

I have break on my 338 RUM that is loud but when the momment of truth comes you or anybody next to you will never notice
-
My father in law belongs to a range down near battle ground. At the end of each table the have a 4x8 sheet of plywood hanging with shag carpet on either side. Its all puke green and blue if i remember correctly. I think it absorbs a TON of noise and eliminates the hassle of being next to some one with a muzzle brake. I surprised to hear the Kenmore doesn't have such an easy inexpensive fix. :dunno:

No room at kenmore between benches, heck they would squeeze a few more in there if they though they could...
I think i need a 10/22 with a muzzle brake and a sissy pad on it... 8)

I have a good friend with a Weatherby 30-378 with a brake.
We elk hunted Packwood a few years ago and I mentioned I hoped to not be anywhere close to him if he touched one off.
Two years ago he got an elk and a mule deer...two shots=30% hearing loss.
Permanently.
And that was in open country.
Braked rifles under the cover of a range are brutal.
If I'm there with my 7yr old son, we leave until the boomers stop.
-
At the Kenmore range they have 2'X2' plywood boards that you can put up so your semiauto brass won't hit the guy next to you. I was there last Thursday night and the guy next to me was shooting his AR and the board worked nicely. Only one round got by it and hit me. He actually apologized about that.
I don't mind the muzzle blasts to bad on the larger rifles or braked rifles too much. I just time my shots between them. What I find more annoying is the 18 to 20 something year old kids. When I was there last Thursday there were a group of them making a ton of racket, yelling crap and just acting like idiots. That was much more distracting than big rifles. I usually go down there after work at around 4:00 and there are never more than 5 people. I won't ever go there on the weekends. I'll go to the one on Ebey Island on the weekends.
-

You wont have to worry about any complaining untill next hunting season, right now your just dealing with the sissys and their safe queens that show up with their factory ammo and cal a 8" group @ 100 yards , good to go.
You want some entertainment! Grab some popcorn and a chair, spend a couple hours watching most of the clowns that show up to zero their rifles 5 days or so before the deer opener at the # No 2 Canyon Gun Club in Wenatchee. I have seen it all, scope cuts, 7mm Magnum fired through a .300 Win Mag, rifles dropped of benches. IT GREAT! the rest of the year I pretty much have the range to myself during the week days.
-
I always wear muffs on plugs.
-
sissys and their safe queens that show up with their factory ammo
The last group I shot at a hudred yards with "factory" cartridges out of my 270 wsm measured .865" That's good to go for me... Nothing wrong with factory fodder.

I don't blame you for leaving with your young son. I hate the braked rifles. I do expect it though and put up with it. It is a gun range after all.

Informal ranges are always great, you get to give the guys shooting brakes a taste of their own medicine and scoot back about 5 feet behind the firing line before you start shooting. :chuckle:
The entire premise of this thread is so condescending it's pathetic. Brakes are obnoxious to all except the one shooting them, the smack talking about ammo preference or safe queens is dumb too. If it makes some people feel superior that they load their own ammo then hooray for them, some of us have other hobbies besides shooting a gun that is too big for us (requiring a brake :) ) and trying to squeak out that last thousandth of an inch of group size. :bash: :bash: :bash:

I find it amusing that you feel "sissys"(sp) shoot factory ammo, yet you apparently have a brake on more than one of your rifles. So, let me get this straight; sissies shoot factory ammo and "tough guys" need a muzzle brake...lol. :chuckle:

Muzzle brakes?...pulleeeeze....Grow a pair.

We had to leave the range last weekend because a guy with some kind of huge custom handgun with a muzzlebreak on it sat next to my daughter (who was practicing with her new deer rifle) and started blasting away. She was getting the direct blow back from his gun. She told me that she was getting hit with hot particles and the blast was hurting her head. She had on ear plugs and muffs and the blast was still ringing her bell. The guy heard her complain about it, shook his head and kept firing at an even faster pace. We had been there for a while and there were other benches he could have gone to. I have no idea why he had to pick the one right next to her or to continue knowing that he was hurting my kid. I told him what I thought of him and left. What a dick! We usually just stay at home and shoot across the pasture but every now and then it is nice to be at a range to really dial in. Unfortunately, we run into many more *censored*es at the range than we do at home.
-
I try not to go to the range this time of year because i don't think it very safe... I have been to the tree farm on the skagit border and been sweeped a couple of times... Muzzle control with a lot of people not paying close attention makes me :'(

I remember the days of public ranges. I worried less about the big bores than I did about being swept by the muzzle and all the others mentioned already.

Tough guy??? I wouldn't call it that, it's more like " Recoil management" :IBCOOL:

It serves a double purpose, the 500 Jeffery that is. If you cant kill something that can kill you, before it gets you. You can drop the SOB on the ground, crawl in the barrel and hide. ;)
Maybe I should go pull the motor in my truck and stuff a more efficient 4 cylinder in there. Wouldn't want the size of the current motor to be considered "Compensating" :bash:

Probably an awesome wetside elk gun. I'm designing a lever-action .458 Lott (or maybe bigger) for that purpose.

It's not the .500 Jeffrey or the compensating or anything like that that bugs me...it's the fact that some feel inclined to tell everyone and their brother about how cool they are and how *censored* all their stuff is. Why criticize someone for using factory ammo? Childish and puny if you ask me. Leave tje criticizing others at the door and you'll be fine here.

Wow 6 pages out of a noisy gun at a gun range. Who would have thunk it? Jackelope I think you have outdone yourself. :chuckle:

Why would anyone want to own, let alone shoot a .500 Jeffrey?
The term 'compensating' comes to mind.... :chuckle: :chuckle:

Some people shoot factory ammo , some don't.
Some people eat at McDonalds, some of us wouldn't feed that crap to our bird dogs.
I have Zero tolerance for those that have no tolerance.
-
Most of those that don't shoot factory ammo don't call those that do "sissy" or criticize them for their "safe queen".
I don't do McDonalds either.

My dad could kick all your dad's butts.

and the reality is one good kick to any of you alls nuts and down you go :dunno: :dunno: just keeping it in perspective
oh and I do eat mc donalds its absolutely horrible for me loaded with empty calories and sometimes it tastes good I've shot factory ammo and handloads and if I ever shoot anything that kicks its better have a brake I will simply wear many layers of ear protection...and as mentioned before muzzleblast is awesome for floofing hair .... ;)
-
I use custom loaded ammo! and it works better than factory and costs 75% less! I am a snob about MY rounds... and i NEVER miss my target! Then again it is hand poured buchshot! :hunt2: :chuckle:

I use handloads too in my .300 but for most everything else I shoot I use factory ammo. I can't say that the handloads shoot much better than the factory stuff though. Maybe I'd have to spend a lot more time working up a load. I'm not a long range hunter/shooter so taking my groups from .80 to .50 is not a huge concern for me. My rifle shoots pretty dang good groups and I'm sure with a different guy behind it it would likely shoot better. I guess it's good enough for me and it's worked well on a few (now-dead) critters since I've had it. I know some people get into that sort of thing and I think it's way cool when you have a rifle/load combo that will shoot sub .5" groups, I just don't need it or have the time it takes to achieve that sort of group.

I have break on my 338 RUM that is loud but when the momment of truth comes you or anybody next to you will never notice
I have shot probably five boxes of shells thru my 338 RUM open coutry and under roofs target shooting i am required thru my job to have a hearing test every year and there has been no change in five years you buddy might have something else going on

were I you, I would count my blessings and start wearing plugs, you can only be lucky so long.
-
The only time I don't plug up is in a hunting situation with a nonbraked rifle. Rangetime and plinking Always ear protection braked rifle always protection. My left ear has some damage from a braked 338-378 a few years ago and I want to keep what I.have.

I don't care for muzzle brakes personally but for long range "practical" competitions they can be very helpful in spotting hits or misses as the case may be. Some of the rifles I use have brakes, most don't. For hunting they are not as practical and do make the rifle louder for the shooter, some are much better than others in this regard. Rifles with muzzle brakes are not easier on the optics and can actually be harder on the optics as the recoil cycle is abruptly brought to a halt when gasses hit the brake. This can be hard on the parts within the scope (especially the heavier parts that have more inertia). At shooting ranges or matches where shooters have to line up together brakes will not make any friends. If I'm shooting a larger caliber... or braked rifle I will make sure there's at least one bench open between myself and the next shooter (although I generally avoid shooting ranges like the plague). It's really funny to hear someone at a "sniper" match complain that his concentration was broken by another competitor using a brake... I can only imagine possible "distractions" in a "real life" scenario along with the implications of a misplaced shot.
