Title: Lab's diggin'
Post by: Wile E. Hunter on October 04, 2011, 05:10:12 PM
Any ideas on how to get my lab to stop digging in my lawn? Yeah, I know, hunt him more. I'm doing all that I can, but I would like some ideas that have worked for others for when he's home. Yard's taking a beating!

How old is he/she? Our pup was an incessant digger and seems to have grown out of it. One thing that seemed to help was to keep his nails trimmed as short as possible. When we slacked on this we noticed a difference in his frequency of digging. I've also read that there is a way to deter digging (or any other unsavory action) with a stim collar, I haven't had experience with it though.

my lab is 3 now, and she dug until about 1.  i put cayan pepper on all her dig spots...once she got a wiff of that, she quit digging.  now she digs when she's bored so we try to keep her busy, walks, runs, etc when we can.  keeps her mind occupied.

put them in a kennel with toys. jolly balls, treat dispensing toys etc. My own dog finds great joy in digging. We go to the river alot and she goes to the sand bar and starts her excavation process. Keeps her nails nice and short....

Labs...they're either busy digging holes or chewing the siding off the house. :chuckle:

Our neighbors had two, their lawn always looked like *censored*.  Luckily our Chesapeake never really went through the digging stage.

Try burying their *censored* in the holes and filling them back in.  Sometimes this will stop them from digging.

my female is a digger. shes usually making a cool spot to lay in. i did the poo in the hole thing but she would just make another hole somewhere else. i finally just framed a 3' section from the end of the deck to the end of the house as a designated dig site. worked great, just rake once in a while & keep it moist. i used 2x10s to keep the dirt in. no more digging in the grass. now if i could just get the male to crap in one general area like she does I'd have it made.

Grab her by the collar, take her to the hole and put her nose in it and give her a stern "No dig"! Then put her poop in the hole to keep her away and she'll eventually get the idea...it seemed to work for me.

I've already done the pick him up by the collar and put his nose in the hole "NO DIG!!!" program. He suggested Prozac, and dug again at his earliest opportunity. Cayenne, he thought added a level of sophistication he'd not previously known. Now to the poop! :)

Went to a couple seminars by Dan Mar, a well known dog trainer. He believes in a "non hitting" approach to training, so goes as far as possible to do no pain to a dog. But what he suggested, which REALLY worked well. Was find the holes where the dog digs. Usually once you fill them in, they'll redig. Blow up some balloons, and put in hole and cover with dirt. A few times the dog digs, they'll get scared to death and stop. Has worked wonders for us. Our lab doesn't even try to dig anymore.
for real try it it works

Must try this. My problem is our neighbors dog and my dog dig holes to access each others back yard. I wouldn't be too concerned except our neighbor has a huge dog door and my dogs go into his house....... So far they have been nice about it but I'm not taking any chances. My dogs have been chained up for a week until my new fence gets here. The balloon the hole idea I'm going to try.
