My Brother in law has some property that backs up to DNR that he purchased last summer. I've haven't been there yet so I haven't had a chance to scout it but was wondering if any of you know if any elk live above Hood Canal. My gut says there has to be.
Thanks,
Dave
PS - I normally hunt the eastside so my westside elk experience is very limited. I want the chance to get a big bull.

what area on hood canal?
my grandparents live on the duckabush river and there is a ton of elk in that area. but its permit only. same with around the hamma hamma...
on of my hunting buddies lives in matlock and there is alot fo elk in that area as well.
-
Yep, lots on the west side of the canal, all up and down.
-
Thanks, That's good to know. I'm not sure right where the property is but now that everybody says that they are up and down the canal I'll put a good effort in scouting it.
Thanks guys!

The indians really put the hurt to them up there.
-
there are a few around brinnon, some up palo alto and all the others previously mentioned.
-
MT Jupiter used be covered
We got drawn for archery permit couple years back and scored a 4x5

A couple of years ago around Hamma Hamma saw quite a few some decent bulls in the bunch too.

use to see them on the hamma hamma flats all the time along 101. havent seen one in that area for years though.
there are a ton around the duckabush, but that is permit only. they come right down into my grandparents yard and crss the river in front of the house.
i would focus west of shelton, and around matlock. there are alot of elk there. lots of area to hunt aswell around matlock.

There are a lot of elk around Matlock, also a lot of local and tribal poachers. The same with anywhere around the Skok Valley. I was up at Brinnon 2 weeks ago and saw herds of elk on both the Hamma Hamma and Duckabush. Mostly cows and young bulls. There are a few up around Cushman that the tribe seems to leave alone.

Liliwaup Swamp around Saddle Mt and Melbourne and Osborne lakes. Remember its adraw only area. If you get an Olympic tag let me know i will give you more info,
-
Are most areas up ther Draw units for Archery?

i think the whole hood canal area north of the skokomish area permit only. idk the units off the top of my head.
-
One more reason to hunt out of state. I'm so sick of all the BS regs that Wa, has
-
units 636 skokomish and 621 olympic draw for archery. i got a tag back in1998.
-
The tribe has decimated the Skokomish valley elk population. There are still some in there, not any where near the numbers of 10 years ago.

Its been more than 10 years, you should have seen the herd 25 years ago. there were a few good ones :bash:

the hood canal NO!!!!!! there are a few herds but they stay on private land....i see them just past the Little Creek Casino when heading west but the drainages to the Skok,Wynoochee, Satsop yes there a few but nothing to get excited about.I live in Shelton we have some nice blacktail but elk are pretty much a waste of time......Head to St.Helens or Mt. Rainer instead of wasting time hunting the canal for elk...

CHeck out Lilliwaup Swamp, Saddle Mt., Melbourne lake areas if anyone draws this tag.
