Title: Are there any Elk down in the Hood Canal Area?
Post by: Gobble on July 02, 2008, 11:22:08 AM: My Brother in law has some property that backs up to DNR that he purchased last summer. I've haven't been there yet so I haven't had a chance to scout it but was wondering if any of you know if any elk live above Hood Canal. My gut says there has to be.

PS - I normally hunt the eastside so my westside elk experience is very limited. I want the chance to get a big bull.

my grandparents live on the duckabush river and there is a ton of elk in that area. but its permit only. same with around the hamma hamma...

on of my hunting buddies lives in matlock and there is alot fo elk in that area as well.

use to see them on the hamma hamma flats all the time along 101. havent seen one in that area for years though.

there are a ton around the duckabush, but that is permit only. they come right down into my grandparents yard and crss the river in front of the house.

i would focus west of shelton, and around matlock. there are alot of elk there. lots of area to hunt aswell around matlock.

I was up at Brinnon 2 weeks ago and saw herds of elk on both the Hamma Hamma and Duckabush. Mostly cows and young bulls. There are a few up around Cushman that the tribe seems to leave alone.

i think the whole hood canal area north of the skokomish area permit only. idk the units off the top of my head.

Its been more than 10 years, you should have seen the herd 25 years ago. there were a few good ones :bash:

Post by: Rocky Mtn Fever on July 14, 2008, 05:55:15 PM: the hood canal NO!!!!!! there are a few herds but they stay on private land....i see them just past the Little Creek Casino when heading west but the drainages to the Skok,Wynoochee, Satsop yes there a few but nothing to get excited about.I live in Shelton we have some nice blacktail but elk are pretty much a waste of time......Head to St.Helens or Mt. Rainer instead of wasting time hunting the canal for elk...
