This will be my first time hunting blacktails with a rifle since I was 12! I drew a multi season tag and I can not begin to tell you guys how pumped I am for the season to open! I was wondering what you guys think about the weather forcast. It looks like it will be somewhat cloudy on saturday and sunny on sunday, but of course that could change! We do live in Washington! When it is sunny, do you guys have better luck in the timber? I have noticed the rain is the best for blacktails. Atleast when I am bowhunting that seems to be true. What do you guys think? And post any blacktail pics you have to help get everyone excited!
-
what it really boils down to is what quality of blacktail you are lookn for, if it were me a southern slope with alders, vine maple, some fir trees maybe a couple of big ass maple and cottons thrown around in there, with lots of ferns is where i would be hanging out rain or shine oh and of course there needs to be deer in the area that might help :chuckle: good luck to ya, ya definatly will be huntn north americas hardest animal to hunt and your gonna get hooked. one more thing if you are along ways from pressure the big ole blackies seem to also really like hillsides that have alot of trees and brush but with big rock faces again with that southern slope..
-
Trust me im hooked! been hunting them with a bow since I was 13. We have 3 pieces of private property we will be hunting so im holding out for a mature deer!
-
Blacktails, especially mature bucks, live in the reprod for the most part. Often times they don't ever leave, they don't have to. Rain helps move the deer but too much rain with wind just gets them hunkered down. Your chances of killing a mature blacktail will be a lot better towards the end of the month, big bucks hardly ever move during laylight hours, even during the rut, but when they are rutted up and stupid... sometimes they can't help themselves.
-
Weather forecast for two weeks from now could be anybodys guess, but I find the best places to bag big blacktails is in low pressure walk in units, find yourself on a landing across from a big hillside with about 8 to 10 foot jackfurs with plenty of cover but openings for glassing, and glass tell your eyes are going to bleed. I've sat in the same spot all day thinking I had it covered, then like magic they pop out everywhere. In my opinion the best time as far as rutting is concerned is the later part of the second week of early modern season. They are really rutted up and stupid during modern elk, but extended buck hasn't really been very hot the last few years, not saying their not rutted at that time but that second week of deer has been on fire lately compared to the extended season. I love them nasty days when its pissing and blowing though, get back in the reprod and walk against the wind, its loud so you dont have to be as quiet, and the wind is easy to detect, more often then not if you constantly scan and watch, and walk with slow movements, you'll walk right up on them hunkered down in their bed without them knowing it. Good luck, blacktail is my favorite specie to hunt hope you bag one this year.
-
it makes killing a nice blacktail pretty tough when it sunny/hot in the first two weeks. you almost have to make something happen in the timber, but not always. the last week leading up to halloween is great, esp. with some rain/cloudy weather. i have killed a handfull of bt's on halloween or the day before, it lands on monday this year so i would really be pounding it sat, sun and taking mon off work. im kinda bummed my deer tag is filled and i dont get to chase em around this year, i guess helping a buddy get one is just as good though! good luck
-
As a buddy of mine says, "Never pass up a rainy day to hunt blacktails."
I agree with that. I've noticed they tend to move around more when it rains. They seem to hunker down in the really stormy weather, but a steady rain brings 'em out. I've also noticed they don't seem to like a heavy wind. I think it makes 'em nervous so they show up in the open more.
Good luck!
-
The worse the weather the better especially the closer you get to halloween. I can't wait! It's almost time again...
It was pi$$ing rain when I shot this guy last year.

I've heard so many people, co-workers, etc say its going to be nasty this weekend, I'm just going to stay home and watch the ball game. These are the days I can't get out there fast enough. Good gear makes it so much more pleasant though. My dads theory on them windy days and the deer moving is trees falling, and limbs breaking gets them running around. I'm with you, I think it does make them nervous only because on those days them deer lose a lot or there survival senses, hearing ( everything is loud), sight (ever see jackfurs in a heavy windstorm, try to detect a person walking in that), smell (wind gusts 40 mph, who knows what their smelling and from where). Them deer are out of their element when they can't use there senses to the full capacity.

Nice buck Grundy, nothing like a black antlered blacktail with narled up thick bases and eyeguards to boot! Always said you can pay to to kill a nice whitetail, or mule deer, but not a for a nice trophy blacktail, and I'm not talking about these skinny tailed southern Oregon, northern California "blacktail."
-
I love hunting blacktails when its pouring down rain. And I'll take the last 4 days of Oct. over the 4 days of extended season any year.

:yeah:
-
Best time I have found is the real windy rainy days ..... killed some of my better bucks on days like that in the timber and reprod. I hate having a wet ass crack butt hell, its worth it if I kill a good mature blacktail
-
like everyone else has said the wetter and windyer it is the beater the hunting! I have taken all my big bucks in a storm.
-
Rainy days generally kill my hunts. I hunt the high country where rain means clouds which means virtually zero visibility. Bluebird days are what I need the most and those nocturnal big bucks don't just cease to exist. You just got to sneak into there bedroom and whack them there. As said before, the last 4 days of the month (Oct) are by far the best days to kill a big one. This is one of the few rainy day bucks I've killed.
-
Nice Buck 3nails!
-
Nice Buck 3nails!
I second that... Thats a dandy.
-
Huntin blackies before Oct 23 is just hikin. 90% of the blackies Ive killed have been shot between the 24th and the 30th, rain or shine. The rut typically starts around the 23rd, at least for the past 3-4 years it has. I am lucky to live in the middle of good blacktail country, my property holds doe's year round, then like a switch, bucks come out of nowhere. In the past 3 years Ive had no less than 10 different bucks chasing doe's across my place, and it always starts the last week of Oct. When I see these deer moving, thats my signal to hit the woods.(no I dont hunt on my property).
-
I am starting to get the itch to get after them blacktails too! This buck is from last year last day of general obviously rutting hard. nwhunter
-
nwhunter,
Nice buck! Did you shoot him while he was tearing up those trees? You didn't ruin the backstrap did you?
-
Man I love these blacktail threads, some nice bucks are poping up on here. 3nails, I've seen some of your bucks you have taken posted on other threads before, you defiantly know how to find the big ones. I do all this from a phone and can't figure out how to post pics, I think I can only do it from a computer but don't have one. Got some pics on it from last year of some nice bucks family and friends took from the same hole I would like to shar, all taken in the later part of early deer. Only way maybe is if somebody else would post them, but its no biggy. Keep the pics rolling guys, there's got to be more???
-
While I haven't been lucky enough to take a big blacktail. I have gotten a few shots on some big bucks. And i dont have any problem finding them. I have to agree the last 4 to 5 days of the early season is when the magic happens. I prefer the really windy days over really rainy days. I love go hunt the thickest nastiest terrain possible, and really wet days can be torture.
I think that is my biggest reason for not killing mature bucks. I never get mire then a glance...but young bucks will sit and watch me.
-
Here's a pic of last years opening day blacktail. This was a perfect day for hunting up high. Cold and clear. He was with a smaller buck that wouldn't leave me alone after I got his buddy.
-
Went back a few years to try and find another rainy day buck and found this pic. Like I said, a "few" years. :chuckle:
-
Awesome bucks guys! 3nails really knows how to get it done! :yike: Lets see if we can coax him into some more pics! I wanna see that wide 2.
-
OK, I guess I will post up a few blacktail pictures too. Most are rainy day bucks, I got more to post but cant find the pictures.
-
A blacktail we dropped a few years back (when I say a few, probably a good 7 years ago). Late buck, rutting hard, trailing a few does.
-
I would say 90% of my blacktails have been shot in the nastiest weather you can be in... down in the bottoms of alder thickets full of devils club, ferns, blackberries and vine maple. Usually at spitting distances, but out to about 75 yds. if things open up somewhere.
The rest have been in clearcuts, when it is ice cold frosty, and the bucks are prodding the does.
I prefer the clearcuts at first light, then get into the timber/alder/biggest mess of brush you can find, during the daytime.
Good luck!
-
love this post. getting me all rutted up for the opener of mod.
a blackie i got last year over near hood canal. wet. windy. nasty. and the last week of october.
all fun and games till someone, or something, stole my rack!
-
Dam you guys are making me miss being in washington! I miss hunting a thick stand of timber on the nastiest days in october
-
Damnit I really should have bought the rifle tag and hunted the last week of Oct with my bow :bash:
I was debating and debating. Hopefully I can get into some late rutting BT's in late Nov.
-
I shot this blacktail buck on lopez island 2 years ago on halloween. It was a wet and windy morning and then the clouds broke up and the sun came out and about 15 minutes later this buck walked through.
-
Last years BT. Shot in a clear cut late in the 1st week of Modern general season. Sunny day, midweek, no pressure. I think it had rained the night before. confusing critters to pattern for sure.
-
Stealth- nice bright white throat patch on that buck! Good looking deer
-
These posts are adding fuel to the fire that wants to get out and hunt. Anyone else on here get to continue their season past the 31st? I am really looking forward to the opportunity to hunt the first couple weeks of Nov.
-

In my opinion it isn't so much as the rut is going completely in late Oct but more that the bucks REALLY want it to. I believe peak breeding occurs 2nd and 3rd week in Nov. which is still good hunting but different.
Seeing all of these big bucks showing up on this thread isn't doing me any good. :chuckle: 8 more days!
-
Here's a pic of my son and his first deer last year late in October. We heard this buck fighting with another buck and snuck in on them. The other one was a nice one also but this is the one that gave us the shot. Typical big bodied high country buck.
-
I could look at pics of big blackies all day
-
Very Nice 3nails!
What I have seen in the lower country is that the peak is usually around the last few days of october through the first week of November but in the high country its about 2 weeks later. Used to hunt low through general then high in late buck to get the most rut action.
-
My favorite animal to hunt.
-
Nice buck BLR. Is it cut in half or is that just my imagination?
-
just folded funny
-
just folded funny
oh ok, I thought maybe you had cut it in half and then put it back together for pictures.

October Blacktails
-
Blacktails, Blacktails. 1984 206 lbs as he hangs.
-
BLACKTAILS.
-
Ill play this game....an average size deer for my area.
-
Got this one the last couple of days before Halloween 2009. He was in a clear cut bedded down with probably eight other deer, three smaller bucks and does. It was way nasty during the early morning( I was starting to get worried about trees and branches coming down on me), then it backed off mid morning which is when I found them. My first black tail, and probably the top one I'll ever get, but it's fun trying to get another every year. I've got better rain gear and optics this year and my mountain bike is out fitted better.... dude I'm getting lathered up.
-
Awesome pics love it!!
-
This is an awesome thread! Good tips for sure! My best blackie thus far was taken in September so doesn't apply to this topic.
Bucklucky, you got some stud bucks there.
3nails, I'm gonna start stalking you in the high country ;)
-
Post your september buck anyways!
-
I could have swore I heard a buck grunt just now :chuckle:

Kglacken, you sure do know how to start them, I hope this thread never fades out.
-
You guys are killing me
-
we are talking about black tails aren't we?
look at this one i saw this AM.
:chuckle:
-
WT, BLR243, AND 3NAILS, YOU GUYS CAN TAKE ME HUNTN ANYTIME TO YOUR BLACKTAIL SPOTS..... :chuckle: i gotta figure out how to put some of are blacktails on this site, but how do you do that when all you have is pictures, they arent on the camera they are all in are huntn album, OOHHH IDEA, we need to get the mods to put up a thread thing where we can post family huntn albums, but i guess that wouldnt do me any good cause i dont have a damn clue how to, these blacktail AKA grayghost threads just kill me everytime, cause its gonna be here in no time and gone again, and a fella can never get enough of blacktail... :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Saw a nice spike following a couple does on exit 252 in Bellingham this afternoon he'll be safe could not believe it :o

All rainy nasty day deer

Hey folks, new to the board and fairly new to hunting. I hope you don't mind my asking here, but I have never heard the term "reprod" before and was wondering if someone could define it for me. Google has failed me!
-
correct me if im wrong here, but the term is short for reproduction timber areas... ie clearcuts with young trees that have just been planted.
-
This is the way I explain different stages of growth, clearcut, jackfurs, reprod, timber, and of coarse old growth. Reprod is about 15 to 20 ft trees with lots of low to the grindy branches, but not much vegetation on the ground in them because the sun can no longer reach it. I could be wrong, just the way my old man taught me and he's worked for weco for 40+ years. Started driving truck, then falling, now he's part of the only crew that still builds road that's employed by Weco on the st. Helens tree, he just finished up doing the ditch work on the 4100.

Ok, this wasn't an October buck, I drilled this guy in September 2009 on a blue bird day in the last minutes of daylight. He weighed in at 189lbs before we dressed him out.
Since I was told to post it....

See doghair, thick *censored*, damn christmas trees, brushy crap that no self respecting hunter would try and go through, spear hunting area..... just to give you some other names.... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Thanks for the explanations, guys. Cheers!

I wish! That buck was pretty big a couple years ago! I haven't seen him this year, he's gotta be a beast by now. I think I'll do some stalking by the fence line... ;)
-
Man there sure is quite a few good bucks on here! I am getting so excited!
-
I love this thread!!! Most of the blacktails I've killed have been during stormy weather and hard rain...
-
Saw a nice spike following a couple does on exit 252 in Bellingham this afternoon he'll be safe could not believe it :o
There's a few deer that hang around that area. In fact, there's gobs of deer that live in the 'ham. I know a couple neighborhoods that have Booner bucks living in them. I pretty sure if the deer inside the city limits don't get hit by a car, or poached, they're dying from old age.
-
Awesome Thread! I cannot wait to get out into the woods in just two days! Helped a buddy of mine get his buck a few years back. Hunting late October, rained the night before but cleared up as the morning went on. We were both hunting the brush, but I bailed out because it was just too wet. Hiked out to a clear cut and spotted 7 does...and sure enough a buck was tailing them a few hundred yards behind. Decided to run back down the trail to fish my friend out of the brush so he could take a shot. Got him back to the clear cut. The buck busted us and started to take off but my buddy got a shot off and knocked him down. I have been blanked on blacktails since then and am kicking myself for passing up the shot....but it was totally worth it to see my buddy's excitement (first ever buck with 8 years of hunting).
-
BLR, you'd make Boyd Iverson jealous, holy cow.
My best blackie from 2007.
-
This thread may have convinced me to stay on the wet side instead of making the trip over to 117... Some nice looking animals.
-
Great thread, gentlemen.

October Blacktails
If this is the buck im thinking of that you posted on BTC a few years back you gotta post a better pic of him to show everybody how big the body on that sucker was!
-
Don't count out the middle of the day re-situation!! Deer especially big bucks are bedded on dry days within about a half hour after daylight! But they can't lay all day! I have gotten a few blacktail in the middle of the day just moving from one bed stretching to another! They are not up long but they will move!! So my advice would find a nice timber to clear cut hole and be patient!! Good luck out there!!

:yeah: I've watched hillsides with small jacks on it and was convinced I had it picked over only to have it come alive, its like they live in holes or something and are all on the same clock.
-
Here's a nice September buck. Shot at last light on a clear, 75 degree evening :chuckle:

I hunt meat so, I'm not real big on pictures. This is the only one I have.
My dad asked if the neighbor was going to miss his dog after I glued antlers to it and stuck it in my fridge :chuckle:

Ditto! I have killed 4 blacktail bucks and three of them where at the middle of the day when I figured all the deer would be bedded and I would have not chance. That is when all of a sudden out of nowhere a buck appears. DEFINITELY hunt the middle of the day.

We did shoot this buck near a road, but he tumbled down the rock chute and landed about 10 yards from another road. It was near Stevens Pass area October 30th.
-
double j .. dude what is the story with that little 20lb spike sleepn in the fridge for :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
This is my Blacktail from 8 years ago. I got it about 10 AM on a clear hot day. The buck was in the thickest brush ever and was just going to let me walk by at about 40 yards. There was a miraculous sight line and I saw this deer laying down staring at me with his head near the ground trying to hide. Every once in a while you can walk up on them even if they hear you or smell you. The big bucks like to let you walk by rather than get shot in the ass. This one scored 137, and I got him in Oregon before I moved up here.
-
dude that is a stud buck, have you killed any big washington bucks since you moved up here ?
-
Tons of great blackies..... Heres 2 neither were in october :( archery bucks, the second buck almost made it into october. Early season bowkill on the 30th. ( back when the season was that long) and the first was a late season buck.
-
dude that is a stud buck, have you killed any big washington bucks since you moved up here ?
I have gone back home and got a few bucks in Oregon with a late muzzy rut tag, but I am one pathetic loser here in Washington so far. I've figured out the elk a bit, but havent taken the necessary time to figure out the blacktail hunting yet. I was chasin girls year round, but now that I got married I have more time to chase deer and elk, so maybe this will be the season. :chuckle: A 120+ class buck in Oregon is expected and routine for our late muzzy hunt in Southern Oregon. They are on the correct side of the freeway, but they seem to grow bigger in So. Oregon and No. Cal than Washington. Genetics, habitat, and hunting pressure are probably all big factors for that.

Is that a drawing for the muzzy hunt?
-
I actually got the buck during regular modern rifle season on a year where I didnt draw, but yes.....the muzzy hunt is a drawing. I get it about every other year. My dad and his buddy got 130 class bucks last year in their slippers drinking coffee. They hadnt intended to road hunt, but they didnt have to get off the road to shoot their bucks. I'll try to post those pics if I can get my dad to send them.
-
Tremendous buck from Oregon. It will be a shock to you how much better hunting in Oregon is for blacktail I'm afraid. At best, Washington is OK at times, we are really losing habitat on the west side and what's left to hunt is generally hit too hard, or overgrown. I remember driving through the hills outside Roseburg, with nice mature buck's standing in every field, just crazy. I hunted the the Scappoose Unit a couple years ago for archery, nice looking area.
-
I've been here long enough to see the lack of deer and the abundance of hunters. I've been here for 5 years now and only seriously hunted hard the last few seasons. Not to put a downer on the thread here, but I do agree that Washington is not even in the same league as Oregon for hunting oportunities. You've got a better chance with an OTC tag there than you do here with a permit. It's pretty tiring to go further and further away from roads, and to devise all sorts of schemes trying to find areas where hunters arent only to find that there are other crazies like yourself willing to go that far as well. Wasnt bad at all for deer season with a muzzleloader, but modern season is pretty packed in good places and muzzle elk season was absolutely nuts. You hardly even see other road hunters in premier units in Oregon. lol
-
heres a few of mine....all my big deer have been taken between 11-1pm when everyone else is at home eating lunch

Got my dad to send me the pics of the two he and his buddy got in the same day that I was talking about earlier. I also attached one other one my dad got a few years earlier..... Pretty typical bucks for the late muzzy hunt in Oregon. Looking forward to this hunt again next year...

Here is my last year's buck and a sneak peak at my 2011 buck. I don't like the picture but my field photos are on my cell phone and haven't figured out how to get them here yet.
It was raining the morning of my 2010 buck and quit after I shot him. This year's buck it was raining before I went and dry by the time I went. I shot him 5 minutes after another hunter missed him!
I love these threads when you can see everyone's deer in one spot. Awesome bucks! Great to see alot of nice blacktails.

I sure hope this is the year I beat this one :dunno: :yeah:
Well I gave it my best shot this year ...I have turned over every rock I could think of and I finally get it done on the last day ....Thats why I love hunting ...never know when or where it will happen but when it does theirs nothen like it ......I have not killed a deer with a rifle in 15yrs Because I am a BOWHUNTER :chuckle: :dunno: But I have been missing the rut in my area the last few years do to I believe climate change...So maybe they best adjust the season to allow for it :dunno: But anyway this buck is not the one I was after but he will work...I know he was fighting with the one I was after because he has scares on his face and neck from not to many days ago ....I made a comment the other day about how persistances has bitten me in the butt and then Bang it happens .....CRAZY !!!! Never give up .....plain and simple !!! AWESOME DEER GUYS .....I love those Blacktail !!! Man they are so easy to kill :chuckle:
-
Nice deer BH45! That is a great pic there next to the big rub.
"But I have been missing the rut in my area the last few years do to I believe climate change...So maybe they best adjust the season to allow for it"
Couldnt agree more in my area but next year i am just going to purchase a rifle tag and hunt with my bow which I really should have done this year.
Last year in parts of Wakiakum and Pacific Counties the BT's never rutted until late archery season which was the first time I have ever seen them rut that late. I couple rifle hunters (archery elk) I spoke with said the rut typically starts the last week of October and goes really hard through the second week of November tapering off into the third week which coincides with the evidence from my area (King County). I think they're still pretty slow over here though but than again I've been waiting for the rifle season to end to scout again and havent been out. Anyhow, next year its rifle season with my bow for me, I feel it still gives you plenty of time to hunt just have to make sure to work to get away from everyone.
-
BH45... Thats a great Buck!
-
great buck bh45! I also like the rubs in the background, nice touch. Even better is the Seahawks Steelers pic in the background
-

Thats a great buck WT is that a 20 or 12 H&R?
-
Thank you, it's a 12. I've had good luck with the 2 3/4" Hornady SST in it. My uncle has the 20 and he likes his also. FYI,the 12 kicks like a big magnum, ouch!

Pics turned out great. Glad you got another good one back there but it's not like you needed the help Mr. 3 in 3 yrs!
Awesome buck and congrats I'll let you know how the late archery thing goes.
-
That area is known for big buck's, but it's a lot of work to get them out. ;)

yeah I know ...I could of smoked this buck with my bow and thats why I went rifle this year because I have chased these bucks in late Nov . for a couple years now and only jumped them and watch them run off ..i have taken my share of animals with my bow but 20+ plus years of bowhunting it sure felt good to squeeze the trigger on a buck again...NOW WHAT DO I do next year because this is not the buck I am after????? But maybe my son will get him come late bow season ...you bet your butt we will be on his tail come Late bow season :yeah:
-
when you find horning like this in late October you best keep hunting that area because he is definately marking his territory...everyday I went in there they had made new rubs and I went in the morning , in the afternoon and evening trying to intercept one of them and after all those days of pounding it , it finally happened on the last day .....persistances always kills but I did doubt that comment until 12:15 of the last day ....blacktail are like whitetails when it comes to the rut and they only make mistakes when they are in the rut ...big blacktails are far from being dumb ..thats why I love to hunt them ...and these bucks have rubbed the same trees they rubbed last year so I knew this was where I was going to get one ...here are a few rubs they made in the last week and when I killed him he was surrounded by at least 20 or more rubs which makes me believe this was the spot he is doing most of his breeding !

I can go on a couple more pages but you get the point :chuckle:

Good stuff!!! Gotta love all the BT fanatics here. I had a monster 3x2 cross the road (four lanes of traffic) this morning at 8:30, seeking does. I always keep my video camera on the front seat in Oct/Nov for moments like this. I got a bit of crappy footage of him but I was driving and the sun was blasting through the windshield.
Can't wait for 11/17!
-
i beleive the bt pop is coming back well foresure some nice bucks

This is mine from Oct 30, 2010. I've been in firefights at close distances, and let me tell you I'm as calm as the water in the pond. When I saw this big boy come out I was shaking so bad I thought I was having a convulsion. He is ready for pickup this friday after a year in the taxedermists shop....He scored 149 & 3/8.
-
There are some AWESOME bucks posted in this thread. This is the best black tail I've ever taken (too bad it was 10 years ago) nothing like some of these bucks! Love to drool over them though.
