Title: Dogs on South Dakota Pheasant, Sharp-tail and Prarie Chicken
Post by: Happy Gilmore on October 10, 2011, 08:43:56 AM
Been having a blast out here the last few days. I'm staying in Fort Pierre and hunting the Brule Indian Reservation. I can't tell you what a great job of game management the tribe does out here for promoting bird habitat and hunting opportunities. There are big shelter belts of evergreens, prickly bushes and big food plots of millet and milo. Some are as small as 1/2 acre and some are probably 200' wide and 1/2 mile long. THey vary location to location. Bird counts are down but, plenty of birds all in all. I've shot my first sharp-tail and prarie chickens. They don't taste good to me so, I'm done with them- stick to roosters from here on out! We've been busy working all the dogs we brought and some other peoples' dogs who brought their own. Been too busy for action shots but, hope to get some soon. Weather has been tough. Very windy the first couple days then, heavy rain. Today is perfect and I'm here in the hotel room working away at my "real" job.....I'll be out in a few hours......time sure goes by slow when all I can think about is getting out to hunt!!!

PG,
Great photos! Sure must be nice to mix business with hunting...! Sounds like you are having half as much fun as the dog.
Happy hunting and be safe....I have a great recipe for braised pheasant over egg noodles,  in case you bring any back.

Cheers, and miss seeing you all for training mornings at the farm.

Hugs from Dixie, Denver and Me

Looks like an awesome trip...how are those sharp-tails to hunt? Are they comparable to any other birds we have here?

I didn't see many. Tasted a few and thought otherwise about shooting many more vs. roosters....:)

You should try to join us next year....makes all the work through the summer really worthwhile! Keep waiting for Richard Matzke(Bluemoon) to show up with some pictures.....I think he should be back home soon from Montana.....???
