Title: Man i suck at goose calling.
Post by: buglin4bulls on October 10, 2011, 04:58:53 PM
I duck hunt alot and usually just shoot the geese that pass over without calling them in. But I recently purchased a Zinks Paralyzer SR-1 for this season and some new floaters to go with. But man-o-man i suck! I thought i was going to catch right on and would have been double and tripple clucking in one day. WHOA! yea right! I just get frustrated that it sounds so horrible. The DVD that came with did no good for me. Im having better luck off of Youtube. Sorry guys i just had to vent  :bash: haha maybe some helpfull tips from all y'all pro's out there  :dunno:

Ya its tough to get short reed calls to blow good for ya at first. took me a while to get it down myself. I've found that you have to cut your air off sharp. By doing this your getting a higher pitch cluck. there is a.point in the call at which the sound will what I call break which is what your going for. also use the air from your lungs to blow not just what's in your mouth if you can understand that. another thing I like to do is use a little bit of my voice which gives it a more realistic sound.  Good luck to ya and practice a lot.

tons of good info on YouTube but I had the best luck using a CD and video.  Honker Talk by Shawn Stahl, Breakthrough II from Dave smith... there are some other good ones out there as well.
Dont try to do too much at the beginning.  break it down, step by step.  Commit 20-40 minutes to it every day and you'll be ahead of most in a month.

leave it in your car/truck for a year or two, and no matter how many funny looks you get, keep practicing.  otherwise youll just scare em off if you sound like a dead goose :bash:

def!!! i do it all the time! the beginning of summer i bought the wreckingball by banded calls and i thought it also was gonna be second nature cause of blowing a duck call fairly good. reality check. bought the Goose Gospel. i really enjoyed the video a lot cause it stressed the importantnce of taking it slow and taking baby steps. and i like how he (chad belding) went into great detail of using hot air and how you push out air from you stomach into the call and using different air pressures to make different sounds. its not like blowing into a duck call you use a completely different air pressure from you stomach. i really recommend the video a lot really helped. i practice everyday from 15-30 mins a day, if you stick to that everyday you'll skill will improve a lot. also practice PERFECT every time.

once you can start clucking/honk/ successfully making the sound, if you have a smart phone (i have the iphone) i record myself to how i sound and improve off of that, also i do a scripted practice (its in the video) its like sheet music. different notes for different sounds, that helped a ton once i learned the proper air pressures.

i really recommend the video, it goes into a lot of detail for the beginner and has a lot of helpful techniques to practice with.

I'm with you I'm an average duck caller (at best) but I may as well be blowing a goose call out of my a$$.

I bought that call when I first started calling and I still cannot blow that damn thing.  I have since when to several other brands and i am getting pretty dang good at it.  There is something with the end of it being a certain size.  I think the horn end may be a bit big for my liking.  I use several R&T calls and one Primos call that are cheaper and much easier to work.

Bulls I still have a hard time with the short reed calls  :bash:   I could kick my backside cause early last year I lost part of my all time favorite call the Olt 77 goose call. It was a very easy call to get the hang of but takes a bit more air then a short reed which I think is part of my problem. You might check into a call by DJ calls (cableas has it) their 77 goose call. The guy worked for Olt for years then took over the bussiness I believe. The call only runs about 30 or 35 bucks. I had throwed out some hints to the wife for a birthday present but guess I didn't hint hard enough and think I need to go ahead and put one on order myself.  :chuckle:

No matter what call you have or are going to get practice is key   try using a lot of lung rather then cheek air and go easy on the air don't try to blow so hard that they can hear you 2 counties away keep it soft and see if that don't help out a bit.
