Title: my deer hunting rifle, whats yours?
Post by: scottfrick on October 10, 2011, 10:06:03 PM
This is my hunting rifle. Its a remington model 700, 300 rum with the thumbhole stock. On top is my swavorski 4x12x50. Im shooting reloads with the berger bullets. Shot it the other day 3 times and had 3/16 group at 100 yrds. Is it deer season yet:)

"Where's the meat?" That's what you'll be saying when you blow a hole through a deer with that cannon! I did that one year when I used to hunt in Oregon. I was down to just using my elk rifle, it was a Ruger 300 win mag. I shot a nice little buck at 80 yards with it. The bullet picked up the deer and tossed it about 10-15 yards. And it also blew a 9 inch round hole right through the middle of it! Didn't get much meat off that guy! But good luck! Nice gun btw!

Top picture is of exit holes, middle pic is entrances. Shot and hit both times at 300 yrds. Dead after first shot but was still standing so put another bullet in him.

I've shot quite a few deer with .300 win mags and never ruin much meat. Just don't shoot them in the shoulder and you should be alright.

I like the thumbhole stock. Its comfortable and I honestly believe it helps me be more steadier and helps with better shots. I wouldnt change a thing on this rifle!!

I've not had a lot of meat damage with a 300 RUM on deer.  On one, a neck shot, had a large exit but most have been quarter size exit holes.  I think that is better than losing a whole animal from not using enough gun.

Acually we were about two miles from the truck. We were out hiking when we came across the bull with another spike and 5 cows.

I shot 176 Groundhogs one spring/ summer all with a .300 win Mag Sendero. The hits were spectacular to say the least and not one of them even got launched 10-15 yards. I have hit deer in a 3/4  ton four wheel drive at 60 and that didn't even launch them 10-15 yards. :liar:

I have shot mule deer at 70 yards with a .375 Ultra Magnum and a 260grNosler Ballistic tip and the exit hole was maybe 3" .  :bs:

I am a newbie and don't have any stories to tell so I will just tell you bout my gun. It is a savage edge accutrigger in 06. It was a graduation gift.(when I graduated college this last spring) I have been laid off for two years so didn't have much money for optics so I bought a BSA Deer hunter 3-9X40. I have put about 50 rounds down range gettin it broke in, plus I usually shoot pistols so the rifle to me was a whole new animal. I have it dialed in pretty well I didnt measure but I'd say I put 3 with in an inch at 100 but my buddy said to get it sighted in at 200 and I did about the same. I plan on using 180 grain corelokt cartridges. I am always open to learning from the more seasoned hunters so comments are welcomed just remember I am new to hunting and rifles.

why all the haters?

nice gun...  and 30 cals have been used for deer long before the 300 rem ultra...

just choose the right bullet for the game and your good to go.

can easily reload and turn it into a 300 win or something similar.   :twocents:

I like it. But just be sure to not take any shot that is less than 400 yards. Otherwise you're defeating the entire purpose of having such a rifle.  ;)

7mm Mag for me,Tikka T3, Leupold VX3L 4.5-14x50, been using them for 10 years + now, handloads 140gr barnes going 3360fps. We were dropping antelope from 325-550yds no problem last year. Not to mention deer, bear, etc...

I like to switch it up every year or two.  This year will be Rem. 700 in 7mm rem mag.

There is no such thing as overkill,  and to the post that said the .300 win mag picked up the deer and threw it 10 - 15 yards,   I presume this was a joke but in case it wasn't.   No it didn't.

This year, since I like throwing deer 10-15 yards I'm going with the 26" 300 win mag heavy barrel on my T/C Encore. Since I'm a sissy it has a muzzle brake, but since I'm not a sissy I'm shooting handloaded 180 grain Accubonds.

I always get a kick out of guys who think a gun like a 300 RUM will "blow up" a deer. You really think its that different than a smaller caliber gun? I've seen doe antelope killed with a 338-378 weatherby, right behind the shoulder (like it should be) and it was no different than if you were shooting a 270.

I shoot a 300 Weatherby Mark V with a Swarovski Z6 3-18X50. I have never "blown up" a deer. A bear I killed last year at 40 yards did have a big exit would but I shot it through the neck as it was standing up looking at me, a spine is like a 12 gauge shotgun inside an animal if you hit it from 40 yards.

I have a 257 Weatherby as well but its not as fun as the 300

I agree its defintiely BS that a 300 mag picked up a deer and threw it. I remember thinking that was possible back when I was a kid though.

I shot this T/C encore in 270 with a 130 grain Ballistic tip, GunKoted green, topped with a matching 3X9X40 Nikon 3200, and a custom laminated thumb hole stock.  Good for short and long range.  Mulie killed at 70 yards, lope killed at 441 yards.  One shot one kill.

I really dont think many guns would be over kill on a deer if you hit them behind the shoulder. I have yet to see a bullet have a bigger exit wound than the size of an entire kill zone  :dunno: If you hit a deer in the shoulder with a 338 then it might be a different story but when your shooting a 30 cal mag theres no since in shooting them in the shoulder cus either way there gunna drop. Having said that I shoot a savage 116 in 270

I forgot to mention. In an attempt to counteract the sissy-ness factor of my muzzle brake, I have a giant 50mm objective lense on my Burris scope. Between that and the handloads, hopefully the sissy/non-sissy factor is a wash. I am a little concerned because it is only a 3.5-10x in the power range.

I'm learning in sewing class how to make one that will stay on...so we're working on that. I need to reinforce the elastic where the waist band on the skirt would be because the muzzle blast keeps blowing it off 10-15 yards away.

Awesome rifle and great caliber.  I prefer the non-detachable magazine.  I've been looking for a really clean one in a .280 for a while.  I've found a couple but they were beat.

There's some really nice guns in this thread for sure but I'm not a fan of packing a 9 or 10 lb. gun through the woods all day..  But I may just be a sissy!

Just set up a Featherweight M70 in .257 Roberts w/ a 3.5-10 Leupold on it for this year.

I've hunted with a Kimber w/ a 4.5-14x40 Leupold the last few years and with the scope and sling it's under 7 lbs. It's awesome to carry and shoots great.

Cool thread.  It's interesting to see what everybody uses.

I see a bunch of people calling 30 rum's being overkill, some folks say they aren't. I wouldn't think so ... just depends on the bullet. When I bought my 270 the only pills in .277 we had laying around were some old 130gr Remington Bronze Points. I shot both my deer that year with  them and holy crap what a meat gun! No matter if I hit shoulder or not there was a 5 inch hole on the other side! I shot the rest I loaded up at woodchucks and gallon jugs.

Conversly my My dad had a 416 Remington Mag, loaded with 400Gr hornady round noses. He shot a doe with it  and I dont think the bullet hit enough animal to start to expand. Entry and exit were nearly the same size. Now I understand that that a 225 gr 338 bullet is quite a bit smaller than 400gr 416, and the 338 will open up and a deer shoulder but with a quality bullet that is meant to retain it's mass it can not be as bad as/worse than the 270 i described above...

My gun is that same old 270 I bought when I was 14 (29 now), M70 Featherweight classic with a burris 3-10 on top, shooting 130gr accubons. Regretably this round is only slightly less damaging than those old bronze points. I had seen an add for accubons in a Mag that said "No foul, lots of harm!". You better believe it! Punched a nasty hole through my anelope last year.

Too much gun is like too much money...

Agreed mostly.
I do wonder if some folks are aware that a 300rum shooting 180 grain accubonds is the same bullet as a 30-06 shooting 180 grain accubonds is the same bullet as a .300 win mag shooting 180 accubonds (or whatever bullet you choose) etc. The only difference is the speed it's moving so.........why is a 300RUM overkill and a 30-06 is not?? A few hundred feet per second here and there can't make too much difference. It's definitely not making a deer more deader. Bullet quality and shot placement is where the meat loss come from. A Nosler ballistic tip is going to grenade when it hits and ruin a lot of meat, be it from a .270, a  .243 or a .300RUM.

The only rifle I own (At least for now. I have a Browning 7mm that Santa is looking at giving me).

A Remington 770 .330 win mag.

It makes sure that the deer are dead! And sometimes makes sure with a little to much ruined meat!

Glad to see ya all liked my sarcasm. :chuckle: But truth be known I still didn't get much meat out of the middle of that deer. The 300 did a great job of making a good sized hole, but mostly it was all blood shot. By comparison, a few years before my buddy made a similar kill shot with a 30.06 using 165 grain. It didn't do quite the damage the 300 did, but if ya hit them right in the middle, you'll lose a lot of rib meat for sure!

There area always be your angle shots but the majority of the time. You will have your side on or slightly quartered shot and thats from 25 years of slapping the trigger on deer. I would shoot them with a surplus 105mm Howetzer if I could get one and if the powers that be would allow it. Who cares about the whole rib cage,  you can blow a hole in the middle of one big enough to crawl through and still be good to go?????

In the middle??????

Remington model 700 BDL mountain in 270 win.  Gun is from very early 1970 with the original Leupold 3 x 9 scope from the same time.  Last year had to send the scope into Leupold since it was fogging and they fixed it for free.  They couldn't even track the serial number it was so old.  Funny thing is though, every animal I've ever shot with it has ended up in my freezer and never ran more than 30 yards........does that make it enough gun???
Title: Re: my deer hunting rifle, whats yours?

:twocents:

I agree.  A 300RUM could destroy more meat than a 30-06 due to the increase in velocity if a crappy bullet is used.  A Remington Core-lokt in 180gr will likely hold up at 30-06 velocities, but that same bullet out of a RUM would likely blow apart (unless the animal is far enough out there so that the impact velocity is low enough).  But use a bonded bullet or copper bullet and you're not going to have a problem with the higher velocity destroying game. :twocents:

The 270 is a great all around gun. Flat shooting, good for deer and even elk. I wish I still had mine. I liked the caliber.

Velocity and poor bullet construction will cause a lot of meat damage.  My .444 marlin punches a .429 size hole going in and when it does exit its about the size of a tennis ball at most.  The wound channel or damaged area is about the same.  My .257 wby with a 120 grain partition which is a well constructed bullet causes way more damage.  I have killed plenty of deer with both but love the bang-flop that ultra high velocity produces.

It's shooting hornady 150gr sst's into 3/4" groups at 100 yards. Sighted in 2" high.

I got s score on this rifle. Picked it up "unfired". Quoted as being a factory rifle. Got if home gave it a thorough cleaning and found out all its goodies. All for a $365 for the rifle

We may let you slide on your scope only being 10x. I am just not sure how you expect to see what others hunters hats say with only a 10 x scope.  :dunno: :chuckle: I do have to ask though, do you have a little pink skirt to put around the end of the barrel where the brake is?  :chuckle:

I'm learning in sewing class how to make one that will stay on...so we're working on that. I need to reinforce the elastic where the waist band on the skirt would be because the muzzle blast keeps blowing it off 10-15 yards away.

I tried the sewing thing with mine but the needle was way to small for my fingers, so I went a different route. It's not as Classy as a hand stitched skirt but it is a " All weather model" and fits my "Sissy" brake on my 450 Ultra Magnum nicely. I did find one in a light shade of mauve that would fit a box of factory ammo nicely but for the life of me I couldn't find a box of " Sissy " factory ammo anywhere in my reloading room.

I have not tried firing the rifle with the skirt in place, so there may be a chance of it being blown 10-15 yards away. I will test it before Sat deer opener here in Easten WA.

Nice skirt..

I have seen the wounds of 270, 7 MM Mag and a 338 RUM.

Bullet weight and type make the difference.

My son shot a deer with the 338 RUM and a 250 grain bullet.

The skirt is easily removable and can be switched between all my rifles with brakes easily, it fits my .270 WSM with a brake nicely. Yes, the barrel is fluted, I was affraid I would be called a wuss if I couldn't hack/hump the non fluted barrel efficiently. I also installed a Shilen trigger due to the wuss factor of not being able to pull the factory trigger weight in extreme conditions/ weather. Please let me know if there in anything else I can do to the rifle to keep the sissy/ wuss factor as low as possible, I don't need the stress of a rifle complex while in the field this year. I need to stay focused.

Yes, along with target knobs, laser range finder and a iPhone ballistics program for those extremely unethical shots that still manage to kill things.

The whole set up is a real wreck!  I fear for my reputation, I think I'll just stay in the dark timber this elk season. So as not to be teased.

Planning on replacing the scope, but even with the crummy scope it shoots plenty accurate enough for deer

My deer rifle is my Howa M-1500 in .308 with a 24" heavy bull barrel it also has some custom work done to it.  It is topped off with a Meopta Meostar R1 3-12x56 with a German 4 reticle.  For deer I shoot SAKO 168gr and any bigger game I am shooting SAKO 180gr rounds.  I get clover tight groups at 100 meters (109 yards) with both rounds.   :IBCOOL:

Ruger MM77 in .257 Roberts with 110 gr Accubonds pushed by RL17 for my wifes first season.

So far this year I've used 390 grain Gold Tip arrows tiped with Montec broadheads, 50 cal Knight bighorn using 300 grain SST's pushed by 100 grains of FFF Tripple Seven and now I'll be using my Savage model 16 stainless in .270wsm with 130gr Accubonds pushed by RL25.  Ahh this Multi-season tag is great, authough I will be  :bash: if I don't get something.  Regardless, an excused to spend time in the woods is worth the cost.

It did have a trigger upgrade from the 5000lb pull standard ruger trigger....it was supposed to get a bipod put on it but.....came back from visiting a friend still minus bipod installed....course then I am gonna need a sherpa to carry it for me....I am a wuss.....and its a heavy gun...the plus side is she doesnt kick me and I hate recoil so put up with the extra weight

Nice rifle! I shoot a 300wsm with a 180gr partition when I use my rifle! Nothin wrong with a big round especially when you only shoot them once!!

I shoot a Remington 7mm Ultra Mag, wife shoots a Tikka 270 Short Mag, and my new favorite is my 8 year old daughters Remington Model 7 243 with the 18 inch barrel and a modified stock for her pull, fits her perfect and hoping she will get to use it this Saturday.

That 7 Ultra pushing 160gr Accubonds is one wicked open country rifle, I know. Groundhogs are a ton of fun with it also! :o
I love that gun, you can really reach out and touch something with it.  I do most my killing out to 400 to 500 yards being the reason I purchased it.  I like sitting up and glassing big holes.  Scope is in the shop right now but when it gets back I'm going to start shooting those 160's, was shooting 140's and had a hell of a time putting a bull down at 420 yards.  Groundhogs sound like a blast, so much fun I'd probably melt my barrel down doing it.  Lol
