My brother has been getting a good little bit over in Bremerton somewhere.  I never asked what dock or exactly where he is fishing.  But doing really good for it being this early.  I might have to try my luck soon....well after deer season at least.

Sounds like normal.  Bremerton gets them in numbers first this early, they dont make it to Tacoma area until early Nov in good numbers.

When I lived "up north" we used to just slay them off the DesMoines Pier, seems like we would walk down after visiting the haunted house there at the Senior Center, and limit out whenever we went until after thanksgiving.

Stillicum ferry dock is a good place.  Watch for the Asians.  They know when the squid are there.

Never have tried squidding but it looks like fun...reminds me of smelting

Are there any hot squidding areas in the Everett area? Anybody fish the North Sound that wouldn't mind a newbie tagging along for an evening?

This looks fun!  Being half Italian I love me some calamari (squid).   ;)

When I was fishing for humpy's up by the lighthouse at Edmonds I saw people casting crab pots with fishing poles!  That looked really fun too.  Never caught a crab like that- me and my buddy usually drop pots off his Zodiac in and around Puget Sound.

Do you jig for squid?!  No idea...

Title: Re: Squidding
Post by: wraithen on November 23, 2011, 06:50:31 PM
Glowsticks would be a short lived jig. Not sure how one would secure all the hooks and line to it reliably either. As for reports, when I catch the tides right I usually get 20 in a couple hours. Haven't been able to do that though since late oct.

ive used these before, they about 1.5'' long,

if you slide a small chunk of surgical tube on your line then tie your jig on, you can slide the tubing over the top of the jig, and then stuff the glowstick in the tubing now affixed to your jig. check party supply stores for these glowsticks

I have always tried to go on slack high tide. Does anyone know if one tide is better than another. I usually go to Les Davis in Tacoma and the current can det whipping pretty good on tide change.
Title: Re: Squidding
Post by: wraithen on November 27, 2011, 10:31:51 AM
Usually I do best when the tide is on it's way in. Slack I don't do bad but not any better than as its going out for the first hour or so. Cloudy/New moon is the best. If that all combines with no wind or seals or otters then you should leave with a really heavy bucket.

Seems they are late this year all over.  I went out to my normal place for the first time over the weekend and only had 2 squid for 2 hrs.  Lots of people, same result.  I was going to take some pics, but since I only had the 2 squid, I will wait to post a pic with some squid to show.  Gave my 2 squid away to a kid and his dad, they hadnt had any luck in 3 trips.  Gave them some tips and where to get the better squid jigs.  Hope they have better luck now.  Good luck all, can't wait to see some pics of your success.

OK, So the wife told me she wouldnt be home until late, so I said what the heck, give it a try because its not raining.  I ended up with 9 squid for 2 hrs.  Not bad, hopefully this means the squid are starting to show.  Had a few other people there with around the same amount or more.  Good night for squidding!  I know people have asked to show the basic squid set up.  Here are some pics to show the set up I use.  You can change it up to your preference.  I also posted a pic of the finished product ready to be cut and fried into Calamari.

I think thats the first time I've seen an actual limit. Looks like that 10 lbs would displace way more than 5 quarts. Do they measure whichever you get first if you get checked or whichever way makes you legal?

Title: Re: Squidding
Post by: wraithen on November 30, 2011, 05:46:09 PM
By heads I take it you mean the part with tentacles and not the mantle. The tentacles are great, we just let them sit a little longer in the buttermilk to soften them up. The beaks? I've never heard of any way to eat them. Doubt that I'd ever try. I love how simple it is to clean those things. Minus the turning them inside out part on the smaller ones. Getting better at it tho.

The squid I used to catch off Central America had hard little toothed cups in each suction cup.  I like the tentacles better than the rest.  I am glad our local ones don't have this issue, though the others were up to 6X bigger.  I'd like to try to get there soon.

The ones we got weren't Humboldts.  They had mantles from 10 to 16 inches long and were about 2 1/2 inches around.  They were very yummy!

Does anyone know of squidding in the San Juans?

Gotta see what everyone else is using. I use duolock swivels so I can change weights/colors/shapes quickly. Usually the difference is technique tho. Sometimes I kill them with a slow sink, sometimes they like quicker action. Sometimes high, or low. Sometimes they'll only bite on a retrieve. They're some moody *censored*s but once you figure out what they want that night you can usually slay them.

The squid were only 4-6" long.  Might need micro jigs.  I moved right next to the guy catching the most and mirrored his cast, drop, and retrieve.  Oh well....

A "noodlier" rod might have helped, though with all those little hook prongs it is hard to imagine they could get off of it if they grabbed on.  I'm kind of glad I didn't have a bunch of those tiny things to clean at 1 a.m.

 :chuckle:
Title: Re: Squidding
Post by: STIKNSTRINGBOW on December 04, 2011, 10:23:31 AM
I agree  :chuckle:
but those hook prongs only work on the way up, barbless, like needles, but squid only really grab on with 2 of their legs, so unless the prongs get a grip, they can let go.
if they get "stuck" is when they wrap the other legs trying to escape.

I'm thinking of going out crabbing on my boat and try some squidding. My idea is hang a light overboard and jig. Anyone done this or are they only in the real shallows like piers? I have no clue :dunno:
Title: Re: Squidding
Post by: wraithen on December 14, 2011, 07:21:59 AM
That's how the commercial boats do it in california. It works. The problem is these guys swim around in the sound basically in a big circle looking for food. As long as you are in their path or anywhere near it they will come. Just make sure there's enough light to get the bait fish showing up. When they start rolling into a ball and freaking out it's usually because the squid are near. The movement of the jig though is probably the most important part. Once you can see a school and play with them a little you will see what I'm talking about. Tiny variations make the difference between a black bucket and an empty one.

You can catch them in any depth of water, time of year, day or night. Pier fishing just is more efficient because they are in greater concentration. But if you are already going to be crabbing anyway, couldn't hurt to try. It doesn't take a lot of them to make a good meal

When I still owned my shellfish business the squid would beach themselves while we were picking oysters in the middle of the night.  They seemed to love our lanterns and all the stuff we stirred up on the beach as the tide came in.  We would gather up a bunch and use them for bottomfish, halibut and lincod bait.

I went out last night to les davis peir in Tacoma and caught 5 in about 2 hours.  This was my first time trying it and I'm hooked.  There weren't many people out there.  Two guys who didn't catch anyting and a group of 6 Asian people who had the set up.  They had a generator, halogen light, full buckets, and also closed mouths.  They weren't in the mood to chat AT ALL, which is ok.  So, because I don't know the squidding etiquete, I didn't know if I could hug my lantern light up to theirs or not, so I stayed a little bit away from them.  They were catching a ton of them.  I just tried to watch how they were fishing and do the same thing.  I had a blast and am going to head out again.

I think I will be heading there in the next couple nights. What time were you there. I have a small honda gen and dual halogen lights. I have filled a bucket or two in my day but has been awhile.

That's where I got started too. From what I remember, the pier has electrical outlets so all you need is a 20 dollar shop light from Home Depot.

Squidding etiquette isn't a whole lot other than don't crowd someone to get into their light.  But I found the best place to put the line is was not in the dead center of the light, but the edge. I think the squid can see the line if the light is right on it.

We were at the pier yasterday with the grandkids and they removed the recepticals. Every time I turn on a light they crowd right in. One night I was there and didn't know why people were giving me plenty of room but then when we were packing up I realized the butt of my gun was sticking out of my coveralls. OOPS.

I got there about 9:15 and fished until 12:00 ish.  I might be headed out this thursday or friday.  If you want to hook up, shoot me a PM.  I too have a generator and a halogen light, which I was planning on bringing next time, now that I know it's okay to bring.

I'm from spokane but will be traveling back west for christmas weekend, bonney lake area.  I know it might be a long shot, but would anyone be willing to give me a few pointers or be out squidding and willing to help me out?  Feel free to send a PM if ya want.  I do a ton of fishing and have gear for saltwater and freshwater.
Thanks in advance

The only etiquette that's a bit abnormal for squidding is don't get mad if someone cuts your line when you tangle with them, it's not personal it's about getting jigs back in the water. Whoever brings the light set gets prime choice on where to fish said light. Other than that the asians have an understanding that the best spot is in the corner, whoever is first gets it, after that you gotta wait in line til they go home. I got mad at not being able to even get to the end of the pier so I went to harbor freight and bought the 80 dollar 2 stroke gennie and a cheap halogen and electrical cord. I started fishing off to the side and did almost as good as the people in the great spots. Since then they seem to be more friendly and respectful towards me.

By recepticals do you mean the electrical outlets? We never needed generators at Les Davis, back in the day, they always had outlets.

I went out last Friday night and did better than the first time.  A couple friends went with me and we brought the generator and lights.  I ended up with 9, my buddy got 6 and they were much bigger than the first trip.  The funniest part was this Asain guy kept coming over and looking into my bucket and at my backpack, which had my gear in it.  he was trying to be so sneeky, but was doing a horible job, so I asked him if he wanted to see what we were using and he said no and ran away.  Oh, well!!  We had a blast.  Now that I have  enough for a meal, I can't wait to cook them up.

My buddy and I went out to Les Davis last night and it was pretty slow.  Between the two of us, we got 15 in about 4 hours.  I made a friend with a lady who said she is out there every night.  She gave us some helpful tips.  I am going back out next week and I'll let you know how it goes.

Just got back from my holiday over new years. I didn't get a chance to post but a couple of my buddies and I fished from 7pm to 2am. The fishing was so good we filled a 3 gallon bucket and lost track of time . My buddies bailed and I ended up staying up till 5am cleaning, vacuum packing and freezing squid. There was a seal chasing a giant school of squid at low tide. It was quite a sight to see. This is my second year squidding and I've never seen so many squid.

Combo or saltwater, and I believe a seaweed harvest one all would work.

No license needed for under 15 year olds.  Just looked it up in the regs.  Just like regular fishing for fish w/o a catch card.

The Hunt -
If you go out this weekend and want some company let me know.  I have been out there for the last couple weekends and have been doing descent.  Last weekend was a grind, but we did better than the others on the dock.  I have a generator and light also.
