Title: Sprague lake
Post by: aaron42ash on October 11, 2011, 10:21:29 PM
I wanted to check around and make sure that Sprague is a go for hunting from your boat. I saw that is WDFW for the most part?  But I would rather be safe than sorry. Looked good from the freeway last weekend, but most were coot from what I could tell.

Lots of birds in the surrounding pot holes in the greater area.  There should be some birds moving given all the private lands get hunted in the area.  You might have to test to see if coot tast like chicken.  They have similar looking feet, kind of.

Right. Well then I will look for chicken feet and hope for the best. So sprague is ok to hunt as far as you know?

I don't know if it is huntable.  I know many of the private areas around it have clubs or get hunted for ducks and geese.  Don't know about the lake.  You will have to call and find out.

We hunted Sprague Lake last year, it's legal. There are closed areas of the lake though. You thinking of hitting it this weekend?

half the lake is refuge, if youve seen the lake and where the birds are ill give you one guess to which side it is...

It's not half, it's a small portion on the west end.

Ok. I will look online for some maps. Hopefully that will bring some clarity. I was plannning on hunting it soon, but not for the opener. I hate competing with hundreds of hunters. Lucky for us it's a long season.

West end is not huntable I think it's from the island west.

the water on Sprague is way up from last year, I know that for the youth hunt it was Hard to find a location that had reeds out of the water...most places we usually stood on were now in about 2.5 feet of water and it was about 18 feet to dry land from where I like to be....but if you have a boat to hunt out of it might work out just fine.  ....the  boundary is the county line it runs east to west, so you should just look at a map with a county line and figure where your landmarks are ....get a compass to check yourself cuz the lake sits cock-eyed so the boundary is not straight across the lake like a lot of people think it is...and yeah there are a bunch of coots out there  :chuckle:

Out of the waterfowl regs but you will need a map to figure it out:

WAC 232-16-380 Sprague Lake Game Reserve.
Beginning at the point where the easterly right
of way line of Interstate Highway No. 90 crosses
the Lincoln-Adams County line; [then] southwesterly
along the easterly right of way line of
the freeway to the easterly boundary of Section
11 (T20N, R37E); thence southerly along the section
line to Cow Creek; thence southerly along
Cow Creek to Danekas Road; thence easterly
and northerly along [Danekas Road] to the point
where it crosses the Adams-Lincoln County line;
thence westerly along said county line across
Sprague Lake to the easterly right of way line of
the freeway and point of beginning.

I imagine once they get bumped they have 100's of other pot holes to choose from as well in the area.  Kind of a challenge to put pressure on them until the small little lakes freeze over.

:yeah:    thats exactly right, plus the refuge draws the birds in and they never have any reason to leave...seems like there is a good 30 minute first light window and then the birds are pretty sparse... just make sure to hit your early morning shots and you are golden  :chuckle:
