Is a 30-30 with open sights a good youth gun for black tail?
-
I have killed more deer with my model 94 than any other gun. Great brush gun. As long as they can use those iron sights and don,t expect very long shots it is ok IMO. Depending on age a .243 my be a little better.

The worry I have always had with lever actions as youth rifle is the youth decocking a lever action, in particular older lever action without a hammer block safety

That was the first gun I used for deer at age 10. Never had a problem with the hammer

I was planning on getting my son a .270 for xmas but he was selected for a youth hunt this weekend and he could use my 7 w scope or his Grandpas 30-30 with open sights and I thought the 7 might be a little much but I will take him to the range after work today and see how he does.

That is exactly what I started out with and killed my first deer. I understand your concern about not having a hammer block but you could always have him unload when going through the rough stuff :twocents: good luck to you guys !

That's a perfect gun for black tails. That's what I have my 12 year old using now.

Except for that one muley in Montana, all of my deer shot with the modern rifle were with a 30-30. First was a bolt action. Love my lever action, but I mostly hunt with my bow now. I always used 150 grain on deer. Bought 170 grain when I was young and went elk hunting but never shot an elk with a 30-30. That's what my 7mm Mag is for.

Just fine! It was my first gun as well

My first gun as well, killed a bear every year with it from 9 to 21 years old... Killed my first blacktail buck with it when I was 12. They do need to practice with the decocking though!! I've never seen an accident with one though, and I was around a lot of them for many years.

A fine gun for BT but I wuldn't use 170g bullets, especially for a youth. 150g shoots flatter, less recoil, plenty of penatration.

Thanks guys! He was only good out to about 50 yards so he used my 7mm and shot his doe at 75 yards with it.

a 30 30 was also my first deer gun and all my kids eather use a 30 30 or 35 rem and never had any problems or accidents
