Title: Hurt Dog- UPDATED
Post by: klindstr on October 16, 2011, 09:11:58 AM
Yesterday on the duck opener my dog got hurt bad, jumping in the water on a submerged stick. Things were slow, so we were throwing the training dummy for the dogs. My dog jumped in the water and stopped swimming about half way out, turned around and came back to shore. She was limping pretty bad, so my buddy checked her out and said "We have to go NOW". I immediately put her in the boat and hauled butt to the boat launch and the vet. She ended up needing surgery, about a 12 inch ragged gash from her mid-stomach down her hind leg. The vet had to put in 2 drains to help relieve pressure. What a terrible way to end what was a great day of hunting. As I sit her typing shes laying in her crate whimpering in pain, I gave her pain pills already. I feel terrible about this, my little girl is not doing well. Luckily she had on a neoprene vest or it could have possibly been much worse. Got to take her back to the vet this morning to get the bandages changed and the wound checked out. Hoping for a speedy and complete recovery.

UPDATE

Well after 4 trips to the vet this week, today they finally got the wound totally stiched up and she is on her way to healing up. Still has a drain in the wound and is gonna need lots of bed rest, which could be the hardest part! Looks like shes gonna be ok, a nasty scar and a great story to tell all her friends. Hunting season is probably over for her, but she will be ready for the next one!

That sucks man. Hope she gets better soon. Nothing worse than watching your friend suffer.

My thoughts go out to you and your dog,  my black lab had an almost identical thing happen a few years back. We had the drains in and had to change bandages daily. She was very luck, an inch difference could have killed her. Keep the drains clear and clean and she will be back out there before you know it.

Sorry to hear about your dog. Sucks when your partner is in pain and there isn't much you can do about it. Time heals.

Bad news....sorry to hear. A good reminder to take a look at where your blind is and what your dog will be jumping into if you shoot some ducks. Last year a friend of mine had a dog break his back at a trial. He had to be put down. Important to look at what and where your dog will be doing their work....Hope he heals up fast!

I'm really sorry to hear about your dog.  I know how it feels when your loyal hunting partner is injured.  A few years ago I almost lost one of my dogs from a serious injury while hunting.  Lucky for me there weren't any cops watching traffic that day cause I was hauling ass down the highway to get my dog to the vet for emergency surgery before it bled to death.  It's amazing how tough these dogs are even when mortally injured.  I hope your dog has a speedy recovery.
