My son and I saw 6 small bucks saturday morning that we couldnt make into 3 pts. Back at camp, 3 bucks came in all shot by kids, it was a good kid weekend. Saturday evening we saw 4 or so more bucks three of which were legal. One was killed by a guy hunting with us. The other two in areas that we couldnt hunt. Sunday morning we went to a spot I had never been to push through some sage. Just before 730 we were cutting through some tall sage on the edge of a steep rocky bluff. We heard a CRACK not too far from us...nothing happened, I turned to continue when all hell broke loose. This buck jumped up kind of got his horns caught in the sage then took off running. All I could say at that point was SHOOT HIM!! Garrett touched off and shot over his back. The buck was only about 50 yds and going through thick sage, then broke in the clear and went straight away 60 yds. I was thinking Garrett wasnt going to get another shot when BOOM and the deer disappeared. Garrett said I think it went down, to be honest I couldnt tell, so we ran up there to hope and get a shot as he crossed a small flat, as we got to where we last saw him...about 2 seconds later there he lay all piled up. He hit him in the back of the head and that tends to put them down quickly! :o Before we touched him I put a tape on him...before the horns fell apart... and he was 29 inches...we lifted the horns a little and matched the grooves all back up and he measured 28...we drug him out of there by the horns and by the time we had him loaded he was 35 inches :chuckle: We jumped another 3pt on the way out and he stood at 100yds looking at us, but I drew a late manson tag, so I will wait. I wanted Garrett to soak up the day on his own...a great father son moment whether it was this buck or any buck...I am a proud papa! :IBCOOL:
