So we're on the same page (and let me know if I'm reading this wrong), the wolf meeting is actually on the 3rd ....

http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/release.php?id=oct2111b (http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/release.php?id=oct2111b)

OLYMPIA - A Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission work session on a proposed state Wolf Conservation and Management Plan will be held Nov. 3 in Spokane, followed by a meeting Nov. 4 on other issues.

The citizen commission, which sets policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), will hold both meetings at the Ramada Spokane Airport hotel, 8909 W. Airport Drive, in Spokane. The commission's regular November meeting had previously been scheduled in Olympia.

At the Nov. 3 work session, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., the commission will resume its discussion about the Wolf Conservation and Management Plan recommended for approval by WDFW. Public comments will be accepted during the afternoon portion of the meeting.

The recommended plan is designed to guide state management efforts as wolves re-establish a sustainable breeding population in the state. The plan is available online at http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/gray_wolf/. (http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/gray_wolf/.)

The commission is expected to take action on the plan in December.

At the meeting on Nov. 4, the commission is scheduled to take action to amend existing restrictions on importation of harvested wildlife from states known to harbor chronic wasting disease (CWD) in wildlife populations. The proposed change would add Maryland and Minnesota to the list of states with CWD. The restrictions are aimed at protecting Washington's native deer, elk and moose populations.

In other business, the commission is scheduled to consider approval of a proposed acquisition of 7,711 acres in Kittitas County and hear a briefing from WDFW staff on criteria for setting population objectives for deer and elk.

The Nov. 4 meeting will open to the public at 9 a.m. Initially, the commission's November regular meeting was scheduled to run Nov. 4-5, but the commission now expects to conclude its business on Friday and not meet on Saturday, Nov. 5.

An agenda for the meeting will be posted on the commission's website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/commission/. (http://wdfw.wa.gov/commission/.)

I got it now after seeing it in writing. When I posted all I had was the recording of the call. Idid not realize that there was an original meeting for the 4th and 5th also. That why Amanda ststed it would now be a one day special one day meeting.

Thanks for straightening me out on that John.

Dale is probably going to be there and I plan on being there and all of you should be telling folks you are a member of WFW. I will have some generic WFW badges made up and will bring a Dymo labeler so we can stick some names on them. If you want to affirm that you are going to be there, send me a PM and I will make a badge specific to your chapter and name.

Great Idea.....

I would like to see 20+ of us there.

This is an important meeting, if you don't want to say a lot, all you have to do is sign up and when called, go up and say "I want to go on record as supporting a minimal wolf population as requested by the hunting and ranching groups." or whatever else you may prefer to say.

So I can try to plan my schedule as well as others who need to plan, is it on the 3rd or the 4th?

it is on the third... the confusion was that there was another 2 day meeting scheduled for the 4th & 5th. Nobody wanted to stay that long so they decided to cancel Saturday. What confused me was that the last thing Miranda said on the telecon was it would now be a Special one day meeting on the 4th.   It was me that was confused...

The Wolf Recovery Working Meeting is on November 3rd.

Al/Dale ..... just a thought I had ....... for the thread about documenting wolf sightings, do you think that could be used to put something together to present the Commission with the locations/numbers, etc of wolves being reported?  Phil Anderson has gone on official record and stated there are currently no more than 25 - 30 wolves at most in Washington, and to my knowledge nobody is really questioning him on that.

I have been asked twice by the Commission about our (WFW)s wolf count. the first time I told them we had 97 sightings and the second time it was 104. I believe that the Commission is smarter than people give them credit for. They know there are more than 25-30 wolves in the state. Commissioner Douvia is from Kettle Falls and is no stranger to Northeast Wash.  Don't believe for a second that Phil has the Comission fooled.

I like this idea...

Al, I think you are correct about the commission, I think many of them realize there are more wolves in Washington and I think they can see what is happening in ID, MT, and WY, which is why they are questioning this plan....

John, my apologies for not responding to this earlier. Honestly I have given it a lot of thought but don't have a clue as how to present it yet.

I like the Idea too Dale. I have been scratching my head trying to figure out how to present it too them, and in three minutes. Perhaps it should be in the form of a letter that we all send in... All of the Data you have gathered is huge... Open to ideas on how to present it....

Later today I may have time to put something together that shows a quick summary via spreadsheet and pivot table summary.  I'm an analyst by day, hunter by weekend so crunchng and presenting numbers is what I do when I'm not in the woods.  Let me know if you'd like me to work on that ...

If you have time see what you can come up with, maybe we can give them a graph with a summary of units and wolf count.

Here's another topic for someone to testify about.

What has an overabundance of wolves done for Idaho?
Just a few short years ago you couldn't buy an Idaho non-resident deer or elk tag by the time fall seasons opened. Check out how few non-resident deer and elk tags have been sold this year and it's nearly the end of many hunting seasons. Please also be aware that anyone can buy two deer and two elk tags, so anyone who is successful can walk into any license dealer and purchase a second deer or elk tag from this quota.

If you look at the formerly popular elk zones, most of them even have left over tags, and some you will notice more tags available than when they went on sale, that's because the outfitters can't sell any hunts and their quotas get turned in to the general quotas late in the summer.

Idaho F&G Revenue
Not only have wolves destroyed many of Idaho's best game herds, the Idaho Fish & Game has lost a lot of revenue. The 7112 unsold non-resident deer tags at $301.75 equals $2,146,046.00. The 5019 unsold non-resident elk tags at $416.75 equals 2,091,668.25. Each hunter must also have a hunting license which costs $154.75. Assuming half the elk hunters buy one tag and half the elk hunters get both deer and elk tags, that means 9621 hunters did not purchase non-resident hunting licenses at $154.75 which equals $1,488,849.75. The direct loss to Idaho Fish & Game could be as much as $5,726,564.00. This does not include the loss from fewer sales of resident licenses and tags.

Idaho Economy
Most hunters easily spend far more on sporting goods, 4x4 vehicles, restaurants, motels, quick stops, and at many other businesses than they spend on licenses. Ranchers have also lost animals, weight gain, and they have less disposable income. The total loss to Idaho's economy would be staggering if you could add it all up.
