Title: Teanaway????
Post by: Dave Workman on October 25, 2011, 08:18:24 AM
Anybody hunt Teanaway Ridge this year?
I ran into a couple of guys up there who had hunted all nine days and hadn't seen a single buck. Not one.
I saw a doe. Just one.

I may go backup there now that there's no competition.  :chuckle:

After all, I'm a wolf (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,86101.0.html (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,86101.0.html))

i was up there from Wed before the opener at 6 miles or so above 29 pines on N Fork road, we hadnt seen a buck one at all the whole time, we stoed all out firearms in a locked trailer and we all piled in a vehicle with extremely bright lights, then headed out for some spotlighting fun so we could locate the areas they bedded down in (and plan our following days hunt), the only bucks we seen the whole time were lying with their bitches after dark, hell one Doe (so i thought) came crashing down the river full speed, stopped at our campfire and laughed at us and mosied on down river and jumped in the brush.

Next morning i went to inspect its hoof prints and it too was a antlerless buck, But it had to be a weird one, it was too big to be a yearling the size of the animal showed it had to be atleast 3 years old, but there were no antlers at all.

thinking back now, i bet it was injured in the nards and something happened to its antlers.

Well, that's not about to stop me.  My season ends when I say it ends.

not to spill the beans but teanaway has been a tuff place to hunt the last 5 years.
I know a lot of locals that live on teanaway river road and they say that the bucks only hang out LOW LOW in the private fields etc.
this is the first year in the last 5 that i have not hunted near red top for general modern.  Lets just say i saw more deer at my new place driving into our spot than i saw in the last 5 years in teanaway.  My buddy killed this nice buck in 2006, but since then i think our whole camp saw 1 or two does.
combination of wolves, cougars and just a ton of hunting i think has killed the higher elevations of teanaway.  :twocents:

Not trying to police or anything I'm just curious if its legal to spotlight during hunting season? The way read the regs its not but that would be cool if it was when I was younger we did it a lot saw some really cool stuff

Well, yeah it's not a good idea and you could get cited if there was ample evidence you were attempting to take a deer or elk with the help of an artificial light source.

I've known guys who hunted 'yotes with spotlights back in the day and nothing ever happened to them, but they hunted in the winter, long after deer and elk seasons had ended.

if we got busted for lighting up some deer and they tried to cite us for sportlighting it sure would be kind of hard to convict us of poaching considering all the firearms we had were safely locked in the trailer back at camp with my buddys dad sitting next to the fire. what were we going to do, run in the woods and scalp the deer with a sharp rock or something?

they call it harrassment

that deer population is down to half of normal combination hair loss desease ,doe tags, natural predetation, hunting, road kill, poaching, probly has an impact but the deer are still there most of them are on miller peak till snow pushes them out and down. the deer down low hang on private property most the time  although the do wander so they really dont get pressure. dickey creek drainage has a wolf den  heard there 4 to 6 full grown wolves with a full litter of pups  so thats how it is there slim pickens compared to 20 years ago when the deer trails were 3 ft wide and beat down by heavy traffic everywhere up high.

According to the gamies I have talked to you can spotlight deer as long as you don't have any weapons with you. In fact biologists often spotlight animals as part of their work.

i agree backwoods with all the wolves, cougars, and people teanaway isnt good anymore well its good but its just hard to find legal bucks there. i've hunted there for three years and see all the bucks before bow season and i see some serious shooters that will make record books too. Also what i have noticed is that alot of people go up there to ride bikes, horseback ride, and camp. Every time i go there i camp at 29 pines and its just too crowded weve been all through that place. I mean we see deer all the time its just no legal bucks. Last year i had a 4x4 with eyeguards broadside at 80 yards but i didnt take my chances. Plus the big bucks like to hangout on the private land and the land owners wont let you hunt there property. So what i do is go to the tanuem unit across i-90 and hunt there got legal bucks on the cam and see deer that are legal, but i just cant put on a stalk without somebody riding a motorcycle or quad. But now i have decided to hunt far east like entiat and swakane not many people during early archery and you always see deer. Thease picture ate from the tanuem unit

Yup, true story....after a 5 hour drive from the westside to our hunting grounds near Curlew we turned off hwy 21 to go to the cabin and as our headlights swung around thru a field there were probably 40+ deer feeding. So, like any pumped up hunter the night before the season we stop to admire the deer in the headlights from the road. Our luck would have it the only other car on the road at that time of night happend to be a sheriff who saw us watching the deer (only 30-60 seconds had passed by this time). The sheriff slammed on his brakes, flipped his lights on and pulled in behind us. After threating us he was going to call the gamie which he said could cite us on the grounds of animal harrassment he let us go....so yes, spotlighting is apparently animal harrassment- even with your headlights I guess. Oh, and the 40+ deer was from 3 years ago...rarley see that many deer in the same field anymore.   :'(

but see thats where i didnt harrass any animals, we drove past and the 4 of us, one driving and 3 looking counted sets of eyeballs, NOT stopping at any time but merely marking milemarkers and embedding landmarks in our minds to plan the next day.
We didnt want to Beam them too long but only note down prospective areas to be walking in the following morning.
when you stop and hold the light in their face (blind them for awhile) that could and should be harassment, we didnt do that. didnt want to freak the animals off nor blind them.

keep moving, dont stop the vehicle and just mark your map (or GPS), its called scouting and making a strong plan.

I was being sarcastic on Extremely bright lights, it was only a tiny mag light with 2 AA batteries. worked good enought to make eyeballs sort of glow strong enough to be noted on a plan.
