Truly grinders and sausage stuffers should be two mutually exclusive items if you want excellent results.  You can get fair to good results when stuffing sausage with the use of a grinder but a sausage press truly works much better.  I have a 1hp commercial grade grinder from Cabela's that ground the meat from 2 elk, one moose and around 4-5 deer last year with ease, so thats a good place to start for a grinder.  It comes with sausage stuffing adapters as well,  But as I said before, the presses truly work much better for stuffing sausage or thuringer.

Product name? Price?  Thanks.  I've heard before from some veteran hunters that you don't want less than 1hp.

i second the cabellas grinder as for a stuffer i would start looking at northern tool they have some fairly cheap vertical stuffers and they are pretty good for the price they cant be beat they can run from $65.00- $1500.00 it just depends on how much sausage you want to make here are some links to some supplyers

Thanks Dogtuk.  I checked out Cabelas and it looks as if its just their one name-branded grinder. Think the 1hp is good enough?  I wont be processing 15 deer a season so I don't think I need the 1.5 or greater.  Can I get by with the 0.75-hp?  I plan to be doing some elk (once I get them)  :bash:

I would check out the sausage maker, they have good deals every now and then, I have a #10 grinder that I got from them and I also have the 5 pound stuffer and they make life easier when I am grinding meat up, while I am bonign out a deer , my daughter is grinding it up and putting it into 1lb game bags.

Bean Counter, sorry I never responded to your question sooner, just found the thread again.  Yes, the one I use is simply called " Cabela's Commercial Grade" and I have the 1hp.  I grew up having a butcher shop straight out of a Safeway store at my house, so I was used to using the 3hp truly commercial grinder.  To be honest, the difference I have found with the bigger grinder versus mine is #1 Price, and #2 a bigger hopper.  One single day last year my buddy and I ground the burger trimming for one elk, half a moose and two deer.  It was a long day, but we put something like 400lbs of meat through the thing.  It ran through it with ease, to be honest you can't feed it meat as fast as it will grind it.  It's pretty damn impressive.  For what you've described your going to do, I would go with the 1hp.

GT, Thanks for the reply.  The story helps as it is likely the upper end of how much meat I am likely to grind.  If I'm able to kill 2x deer, 1x elk, and a bear to boot, I'll be happy to stand in the kitchen grinding all day.  It sounds as though the 1hp will be plenty for me.  Fortunately this will be a relatively easy expenditure to justify to the Mrs. because we're pretty young and I have many hunting seasons ahead of me of processing my own game. Should pay for itself over time.

I bought the Cabela's 3/4hp grinder last year.  Think I paid like $300 for it, but man it works good.  I made some burger and sausage from a deer last year in 5 pound batches, 20/80, and I swear I had a 5lb. batch of meat ground up in less than a minute.  I couldn't feed the machine fast enough.  Looking forward to giving it some more use this year.

Okay so Cabelas is a good brand. What about the Kitchen Aid with the meat grinder attachment.  Used it? heard stories?

I also used the Kitchen Aid with grinder attachment a few years ago on a deer.  My advice: DON'T USE IT!  The tray is way to small.  It took FOREVER to grind up just one tray it was so slow.  I got so pissed off and frustrated at the damn thing.  Do yourself a favor and buy a good one.  You won't regret it.

I agree also on kitchen aid it was a BIG disapointment. I've done around a hundred pounds with it and its going to a garage sale.
