I've been thinking about building a layout boat. What are some pros and cons to them. I found some free plans online for the Hybrid Duck Boat. Anyone build this boat. If so what modifications did you do if any.

I built one early this last summer and Low97ram built one at the end of the summer. Her eis the thread from my build.

Fun build and works great. Had them out last weekend and they were flawless. We even used them as a blind from shore one day when we did not need to get in the water.
I built the NL. Got the plans and video too

Great job on the boat. I think I'm pretty convinced into building one, but not sure which model.
How did you determine which one you wanted to build? How do you transport it? I was hoping to make one that will fit in the back of my Dodge. How far can you carry/drag/roll it? How helpful was the video?
-
It weighs about 70lbs. I carry it to my truck about about 40yards and can drag it about as far as you want. Mine is a little heavier the Low97ram's, I have a few more coats of paint and fiberglass (due to screw ups). The only real modifacation from teh original plans is I added 3 ribbs that run the length of the bottom of the boat. Helps track better in the water and keeps the bottm off the ground when draging it.
I just looked to the model that i felt fit my needs. They are all great boats but you just gotta decide wich design you like.
If you would like to borrow my plans, you are welcome to. I am not uing them right now and plan on building another on but not untill next year/ I have no garage and have to g=build it outside in the drive way, (as you can see from the pic.)
It was fun and worth the build. If you get other plans, I recomend getting the DVD and watching it. It has lots of good tips on your build. Low97ram never watched the video, and I made suggestions to him on certain thins and he asked me how I know that,a nd said Watch the video :chuckle: :chuckle:, he never did :dunno:

Yeah, I think the NL might be the way to go. Do you use a motor? Pods? I live in Snohomish could you email me the plans?
-
I actually added a 2x6 on the back and bought a lawn ower battery. I left the motor at home on Sat. and that would be the last time I do that 8)
They are paper plans, not on the comp.

How do these work out? Not sure if you have any experience padddling without them, but that's the only complaint about my SN. I think the NL would track better just because of the angled sides all the way back, too. :dunno:
The plans are pretty cheap, and worth buying, if for no other reason than to support the dude that made them and sells them

we both put the ribs on them thinking they would help track better. only problem i see is that the center one isn't long (deep) enough to help...though it does make a difference. we didn't want to add 2x4's the the bottom as we were trying to limit the weight, so we used 1x2's.
and Gas...why watch the video when you were over here all the time, drinkin my beer :brew:
they do work good and are a bit bulky but fairly easy to carry. i think the one thing we are going to do to them is add some sort of wheel device for longer than truck to launch hauls.

And as for rowing. A kayak padddle will do much better then an oar. Of course a trolling motor works even better :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Pete laughed at me when I said I was going to add a motor but when we went out on the water, I was doing the :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: He was thinking I would tow him around :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:he thought wrong :ass:

There are plans to make a motor out of a weed eater... That might be the ticket. :chuckle:

Thast would not be that bad of an idea, but where I hunt mostly, no gas motors allowed.
Post the link to he plans if you would

Hmmmm... I didn't find plans quickly... couple Youtube vids though. I'll have to do some more digging.
