Title: Montana reports??
Post by: nwhunter on October 30, 2011, 09:06:26 AM
Anyone have a deer report from Montana yet?? We head over this Friday with 5 buck tags and an antelope tag so hoping to hear some news. I know they had a rough winter last year on the east side so we are staying a little more central going north of Great Falls. Looks like it will be cold with seven day forecast calling for low of 15 on Saturday and high of 28  :yike: nwhunter

a buddy of mine is an outfitter in the scapegoat and he said it was the worst winter he had ever seen. he said there is a lot of winter kill, not to mention the wolves. this is the first year in 26 years that i didnot apply. I was drawn 22 out of 25 years for a big game combo and progressively seen it getting worse. after i heard of the winter kill and the price increase i decided to sit out. the first year i went i was 17 and it was 325.00 with a bear tag. times have changed good luck i will call him and find out how it is.

Hi, i 'm new to the site . I just got back from Shelby, MT. Thursday. There were four of us with a total of six tags. Hunting was alot slower than normal. We managed to kill four bucks (two muley 4x4's, a 4 point whitetail and a 3x4 whitetail ). One member of our group also had two doe tags that he filled. So six deer in five days. One thing i noticed was the body size of these deer was on the below normal side. I'm thinking that the winter last year was hard on the deer and that they haven't fully recovered. Also the antelope in this area were almost gone , the winter was real bad for them . I hope this helps.

Hey Scott, talked to a buddy this weekend that lives over there. He said that at least during bow season looking for elk there were certainly less deer then "normal".  That being said he still saw plenty of them and some real solid 4x4's.  Don't expect you'll have much of a problem.  I haven't hunted that area but spent a little time over there and it's a lot of fun.  Good luck!  Nice to finally meet you the other day.

The northern third of the state did get hit very hard. The central and southern herds are fine but I haven;t seen to many big bucks as of yet. The weather around here (Billings) has been really mild and the rut hasn't even come close to starting. Maybe this weekend? I would stay in the western part of the state around Dillon. More Elk and deer herds are still healthy
