Well today was just like every other blue bird sky day hunting blacktail.....nothing but a hike :chuckle:
I found myself reaching the end of my usual hike and just made it out to the road about 300 yards down the road from where I missed the big buck on Friday. I seen a truck parked right at the edge of the clearing so I guess that ruined my plan to walk down there for the last hour of daylight. Just as I was gonna head to other direction I noticed one of the guys waving at me. I figured he wanted me to walk down there so I headed that way.
So I get down there and find a guy (richard) and his young daughter (kimberly) watching 4 deer about 200 yards against the tree line. The reason the Richard waved me down was cause they had no binoculars or scope. So I took a look and seen one of the deer was a very nice 3x4.
Then Richard told me he had already tagged out this season and there was no way Kimberly could make that shot with her 30-30 with open sights. It was her first year hunting and the first buck she has got to see all season. the look of dissapointment on her face was the saddest thing I have ever seen. So i did the only thing a person with a real heart could do in a situation like that. I politely turned down the chance to shoot what would have been my biggest buck, I smiled and handed her my rifle. We found her a nice solid rest ( the same rest I shot from Friday).
I told her not to worry about the kick of the rifle, that it kicked less then her 30-30. I told her to aim just below the top of the back right on the bucks shoulder. She took aim and squeezed the trigger. To mine and her dads shock the buck dropped in his tracks. As I turned to her to say she got her buck. She was already jumping and screaming "daddy daddy I got it, sir sir (meaning me) I got it" and ran over and gave her dad a big hug. then she turned to me and tackled me and gave me the biggest hug I have ever gotten
After the very long drag to the road and getting a ton more hugs from her and more thanks then I could ever get tired of hearing. Her and I gutted the deer with a bunch of "ew's" and "that's gross, I have to touch that"
Richard stood back and let it be her and my moment. Saying he has 5 first deer under his belt with his other kids and just being there was more then he could ever ask for. I felt really honored for that and just soaked the moment in for everthing it was worth.
this is one of, if not the best moment I have ever had the privilege to be part of.
I made sure to tell him about this site and to make sure to become a member and let kimberly tell her version of the story and post lots of pictures. They will also be emailing pics to me to post.

-
Yea I can't seem to whipe this smile off my face.
Btw to those who read my thread about missing or not. This is in fact the same buck I missed Friday night. He has the same double white patches on his neck and a distinct crab clawed back fork on the right side.
-
:yeah: Congrats to all involved.

You without a doubt are the man! That is the best story I have seen on here in quite awhile. I hope you believe in Karma, as you just bought yourself a whole bunch of the Good Karma. May the Deer and elk gods pay you back in triples... awesome! I have gotten to be with 3 of my kids first kills, well kind of anyway... my first son actually got his deer and elk as I was walking up the other side of a draw towards him... yep both the same morning... (dang showoff kid).
-
Very cool story! I hope they will sign on as members and share their side of the story and their happiness to have had a stranger help them.

Well done sir....the deer gods will shine on you someday.

Good job, great story and that was a heck of a nice thing to do. So what was the rifle that you let her shoot the buck with?

Probably a .300 RUM. "Don't worry, it won't kick nearly as bad as your .30-30." Poor little lady's shoulder is black and blue now. :chuckle:

Aha! That's why the buck went down so fast! :chuckle:

That is just plain AWESOME! That is the action of a TRUE SPORTSMAN . Guys like you are tough to find these days and I am so thankful that you did what you did and then shared it with the rest of us. Just AWESOME!

Good job, great story and that was a heck of a nice thing to do. So what was the rifle that you let her shoot the buck with?
Semi custom Weatherby vaguard 308. 21" pacnor barrel with magna porting (making it a perfectly light recoil for her), Timney trigger (set perfectly light for her). Topped with a redfield revolution 2-7 scope which I totally forgot to put on 7 power so she could see. But we got that taken care of before she took her shot
It was hard to say no when she kepted asking if she could have it :chuckle:
The shot was roughly 200yds. It's a great thing to know your rifle and how if performs. I made sure I did alot of shooting this summer learning this rifle. And I knew as long as she could keep the rifle steady that she would have her deer.

Good on you Bankwalker, the world is a better place with you in it.
In all honesty, you will probably cherish that memory more than if you had shot that buck.
-
Another example of some great people on this site!
Good on you sir!
Not that you need it, but Karma will smile on you soon :rockin:

That's the way I see it. I would honestly rather have this memory over a lifetime of big bucks. Though I may have only shot a couple spikes and a couple 2pts and don't know the excitement of taking a monster buck. I can say this moment and being there with my ex for her first deer a few years ago brings a way bigger joy to hunting.
You never forget your first deer. It is usually for most people their proudest and most memorable moment in hunting. It truly was amazing for her dad to allow me to loan her my rifle and is an even bigger privilege to be part of that memory.
It makes me look forward to having kids and hopefully watching them take their first deer. if they chose to hunt.
-
Awesome! good karma coming your way!
-
That is really cool bankwalker. That is a day that none of you will ever forget. Kudos to you...

Bankwalker for President! You, sir, have a great heart. We need more like you in this world. The memory of this day will mean more to you and the girl than any buck ever could.

Well done. I cant wait to see some pics and hear the story from them. Awesome job Bank.

Bankwalker thank you for being the kind of outdoorsman we all should be, you probably helped make a hunter and set the bar as far as the example we should be for the kids.
That is probably one of the greatest stories of the year. Good on you, She will never forget you and you will never forget that moment, truly a blessing both ways.
God Bless

Nice job Bankwalker!
Not to take anything away from your awesome actions, but who wouldn't have done the same thing? I think most, on this site anyways, would have as well. Hopefully she will post her story up.

I would rather read that story over any other deer hunting experience on here! You sir are a true gentleman, and deserve many more kudos than we could possibly give!
-
That is an amazing moment that the three of you will cherish forever. You are a true gentleman and sportsman. I hope that the deer gods reward you for your selfless act of kindness. If the gods don't, I would be honored to help you get a deer any day.
-
Thanks guys. I knew you all would love reading this story.
I keep replaying it in my head. I just can't get enough
-
If there was a system in place to nominate other hunters deeds for a few points. I'de put your name in the basket. Great job helping the young ones, she'll never forget the kindness offered by another hunter.
