Went out duck hunting this morning with a good friend (upwind). Had a huge swarm of teal fly by us, and we didnt notice until they were almost gone. Got a few of them luckily enough, and even had a chuckle on how they snuck up like that. One of the birds that we hit, swam like crazy to a huge area of reeds. My loyal lab Kuma was swimming as fast as he could to get it but lost him in the reeds. I know the duck didnt swim to the other side, but probably stayed put or dove to get away from Kuma. What do you guys do with your dogs in those situations, or how would you train them for that? The marsh probably covers all scent of the ducks up :dunno:, and if it wasnt so full of pot holes, we could have walked to the area and helped. Todays count was 2 Hen teal, and a nice sized Drake mallard. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: For being such a nice weatherd day, I actually didnt expect any flying, but with duck hunting you never know :chuckle:

SO was that you blasting in #2 today? I was down by the other side just watching the geese... LOL
-
yep, did you see me call the geese over the blind, just wish I could have blasted them today :bash:
-
No, I was just down there for a bit watching the ducks and geese around 7:45-8:15. I need to get over to the base and get my base permit this week... Been procrastinating... LOL Hey whats the story on the blind right off the road by the bay? Its a new one.

Would rather a slow day in the blind then a boring day in the office!!
As for your dog, I don't really know any tricks other then letting your dog use his nose and natural instincts. Just try to get him on the area quickly so any smells are still fresh and any movement of the bird can be picked up. :twocents:

With a good dog, he will recover it, if it is still on top of the water. If it dives, you can only start kicking up the bottom of where you saw it dive and hope it didn't swim under water for a distance. Many time in thick stuff, they can't travel to far, so they just drown themselves. It's one of those you let the dog work the area for a bit and see if they can get the duck. If they can't it is a MIA.

I inquired about that at enviromental and I got the deer in headlights look. I cant imagine it would be for hunting, too close to the road :yike:

he ran around in it for a while, but the other ducks we dropped got his attention :bash: If the pothole werent there we would have been out there helping him. One more reason to buy a boat :IBCOOL:

I am going to check with them on it... can't believe they built it that close to the road, but all shots would be away from it though. Is environmental where you buy the base permit or is it over at the marina?
-
I bought my permit at the marina, but on the day of the class. Not sure how it works after the class :dunno: I got permit 11-01 this year :IBCOOL:

Nothing better to be day dreaming or talking to your hunting buddy only to be interrupted by a flock of ducks... Normally happens to me when I am trying to open my thermos of coffee... that can get really messy! :yike:
