I was checking out a clear cut in clearwater unit when out of nowhere a white helicopter comes crusing about 100 or so feet above the ground and just hovering above the trees. The helicopter just flew around a couple clear cuts adjacent to where we were for about 20 minutes or so and took off. Anyone have any ideas on this nonsense? I know we were baffled. Oh this was during mod season as well. So much for the stealth approach
-
its the "helicopter draw tag" best tag in the state :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Are you talking about the westside 615? I was in 618 and had a small plane flying all around and then a helicopter. I think it was on the Wed or Thurs.
-
Probably Cedar Salvage operation, they use helicopter all the time to fly the wood out, other than that, I have no idea.

I'm all over it , where do I apply? :rockin:
-
Flying shake bolts. There always in there.
-
Cedar blocks or other. Also they fly cedar boughs out. Remember you are hunting in working forests. Many other types of surveys going on.
-
It is the Native's new way to hunt the deer & elk.. That way people can't talk about their road hunting :chuckle:

Maybe they were doing a drop camp?
-
animal head count
-
Wrong time of year for elk or deer surveys. Would have very little meaning.
-
It was the Fish and Wildlife...... Taking head count of animals and headcount of hunters!!
It happened on my in the winston unit last year.

thats kinda like the Makha indians doing a traditional whale hunt with a 25 horse Mercury and a .50 cal :chuckle:
-
i would be willing to bet that it was indians hunting sense they are aloud to hunt with helicopters

Yep that's it. The game dept. doesn't have money. The tribes have all the money and power.
-
The helicopter/plane where I was wasn't shooting. Just a small plane that flew around up one drainage and then down the other side. Then a helicopter came over. The cover was too thick to see as it hasn't been logged in many years (maybe if they were using thermal imaging). I was guessing WDFW, NPS, or hippies (all the same now really). Last year I was in 607 and NPS was doing an elk count at the same time as WDFW. From what I understand they use their radio receivers to track the collars and then work over the area. Last year it was in Sept not Nov.
-
I could use one of those for scouting
-
I hate to bust everyone's bubble but, I fly with the best thermal site in the world. The amount of detail we have is amazing. But thermal sites don't see through stuff. Flying over trees I see trees. If deer people or elk are under tje trees I can't see through tje tree branches. I can't see through walls etc. With a thermal you cant see through glass

had a chopper fly out of the canyon me and my son were huntin' on OCT. 2nd in the cowiche for muzzy :bash: Probably the dfw transplantin' wolves (i mean targets) they weren't 100 feet off the ground either!
-
Mabye it was PETA...

I have flown over a bunch of animals and most rarely even look up. Most keep doing whatever it is they are doing. Unless you come to a hover right above their heads and literally try to herd them. But zipping around at 100feet (while not safe) wouldn't bug the animals at all.
-
colockum, I've seen plenty of animals scatter hauling around at 200 feet. Kinda depends on the terrain. Out in the open they spook really easy. On reservations and in thick cover they don't do much. You can't count your helo bc you have that whole underpowered system with those skinny blades. I do envy that your transmission just slides right out tho.
-
Is everything on here a conspiracy??? Where these planes and helicopters seen doing anything other than flying around? Who's to say they weren't just people out for an afternoon or morning flight? People own planes, people own helicopters and surprisingly enough, they fly them.

You must be a Hooker huh?

Nope. Give you a hint. Same engines as you! JColony, I think most people were kidding and the OP was curious.

:yeah: The video of the Yakama Nation and Nevada F&W herding and catching showed the Antelope fleeing for their lives. I was north west of this location that same weekend and I don't recall any helo's? :tinfoil: :tinfoil: :tinfoil: Maybe they just stayed in that general area for some reason :dunno: transpl...wolv...um nevermind... :tinfoil: :tinfoil: :tinfoil: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Ah the crashawk. What do you mean underpowered. And those skinny blades give us whisper mode :chuckle: I can almost hover over there.

I know people making comments were joking around, I do have a little bit of a sense of humor :chuckle: It was more of a comment to the thread, not the comments.

Is everything on here a conspiracy???
No shiat. I swear, some of the dudes on this site must lay in bed at night and dream up conspiracy theories.

Rick your not allowed to talk about consiperys until you make at least 1000 posts :chuckle:

Never accept a simple explanation when a vastly complex conspiracy theory will do...

White MD500 + black hindquarter = Olympic Air.
Flyin bolts, probably. The tribe hires em to count fish in the river, also. They are always out there.
Not much of conspiracy, but the pilot HAS seen Sasquatch.....shhh.
-
The helo was small and was not moving lumber. It was moving too fast to be counting anything.

Did the pilot get pictures and documentation? Doesn't matter if Saquatch took you down and had his way with you. When it comes to Sasquatch and the excessive killing of branched antler bulls on the Clockum. Without pictures and documentation it didn't happen. :chuckle: :chuckle:

How small? Robinson small? There are one or two I know of that are privately owned out there.White MD500 + black hindquarter = Olympic Air.

Amazing what you see cruising the Rainforest if you do it on a regular basis.

Biggerhammer sssh. The Blue Mountain Mafia has spies everywhere. You mention sasquatch again and tjey will find you. 8)

Yes that small. It was flying sideways in and out out the trees. Like my buddy said 100ft tops.

We all see allot in the hills, I would never admit to seeing him even if I have. ;)

Well if it was small it wasnt carrying anything. And if it was moving fast it may have been going from point A to B. Y
ou know as helicopter pilots we do like to fly low and fast. Well except Kiowas because they can't fly fast :chuckle:
-
From what I've heard it won't be the state doing it. :yike:
-
Just someone scouting elk.
-
The kiowas can't fly low either. Well the aircraft is capable, the pilots have a strange fascination with wires and hitting the earth though.

haha If it was going from A. to B. then B. must not of been a known point AND the pilot must of thought it was easier to fly sideways in and out of the trees. Civilian (non-military) bird for sure.
-
I doubt it was flying sideways in and out of trees very fast. You can either fly fast or fly in and out of trees but you can't do both. Well not for very long anyways. :chuckle: If they were flying sideways and in and out of trees I suspect they were surveying something. If this was in the Cowiche they could have been looking for stray cattle.
I'm just saying just because people see a helicopter flying low and doing stuff like this doesn't mean they are planting wolves or chasing elk.

That is so wrong. But funny. Wish there was a Kiowa guy on this site. :chuckle:
