Anyone have any info on these guns? Like the 30-06, but seems to be a tough trigger(not the acutrigger), but looks worth the $400 scoped out the door NIB. Any info will help, got it for my daughter(14).
-
$400 is pretty steep for that gun and the scope they come with is what I call fish-bonker grade.
-
What's fish bonker grade? Does that mean really tough or useless for anything other than as a fish bonker? :dunno:

I'll give you three guesses...
useless for anything other than as a fish bonker? :dunno:
You got it on the first try! lol...Firkking horrible is a vast compliment to those ...things...
-
Theres already a thread on the AXIS but 400 is steep for the combo deal. I think DICK's has them on sale this weekend for 329 or something like that. As for the scope don't bother unless the combo deal is cheaper than just the rifle if it is take the scope off and put it on a pellet gun or something or bonk fish with it. The trigger is stiff but you can fix that for about $2 with a spring from Tacoma screw.
-
ya skagit arms is spendy, and knew the scope needs to be replaced (range finder on the way santa and all). Seen the spring fix online for the trigger, but will take it in to get it done professionaly. Wondering if i can get the accutrigger installed?? :dunno:
How is the recoil? I know the 30-06 is a bark/kick(short and synthetic), compaired to the 270 she has learned to like. I wanted more knockdown power for elk. I know a 270 will work when hit rite, but i want no chance of a wounded animal. I know they are the all around caliber for Washington, just worried she will start to flinch if its a hard trigger, and a loud/sharp kick to her.
I am looking into a buffalo or moose hunt for her graduation gift, when she dose, i want her prepared.
-
Yes you can get the accutrigger installed but unless you like the glock trigger feature it's gonna be the same price as a decent aftermarket trigger.
If the kick is too much on the first shot or three stop shooting it. Get her a good pad and see if that helps. Buffalo or moose hunt for graduation?! Can I be your daughter some time?
-
Check all the Black Friday adds first, I just saw the Axis/Scope combo in one of them for $279. Screamin' deal. A lot of people on the Savage Shooters Forum are quite pleased with them. Typical Savage accuracy, with a trigger that needs some work. Quite a bit of info on fixing the trigger there as well. My local Wal-Mart has just the rifle at $269 every day. I'm probably gonna pick one up in .223, just to keep my ammo consuming wife and daughter happy in a more economical way! :yike:
-
I couldnt even talk my girlfriend into buying one... Thats how terrible and cheap feeling they are. Stay away from savage
-
I think its a good gun, also sports authority has some for 329 everyday price. The action isnt bad, its probably the best new rifle for under 400 dollars.
-

Where is it possible to get the Accutrigger installed on the Axis/Edge rifle? Savage doesn't show they offer that as an option on those rifles.
I have 3 Savage rifles and one Stevens 200 LA only one is an Accutrigger model the others are not adaptable but I have aftermarket triggers in both of those. Just curious :IBCOOL:
-
Esspecialy when the local Bi Mart has matte blued Rem700's in any flavor you like, long or short action. With the scope , if that's what your into. For $369.00.
-
FAL, maybe my wording was confusing. I meant if you purchase the accutrigger you can put it in that gun. Did not mean it was possible to buy it with trigger installed.

Wraithen, the Axis/Edge is slightly different than the Savage 10/110 line of firearms and the Accutrigger cannot be installed, at least not done safely. There are better triggers available to install that will fit without creating a monster. I commented on it thinking you had already somehow done this swap, it appears you have not. If I am incorrect please by all means provide me with the detailed info that proves it can be done safely as I know of two people that have the Axis/Edge rifles that hate their triggers and would like to install the Accutrigger system. So far Savage states it cannot be done and the gunsmiths on the Savage websites pretty much state the same thing. :dunno:
-
Never said it would be easy either! :chuckle: I have not made the swap but it appears it wouldn't be a simple remove/reinstall job. The specs aren't close enough. The market for the axis/edge isn't very big yet as it is a new gun. It may never be big for aftermarket parts either if savage deems it a good idea to change the design every few year like they sometimes seem to do. All of that said to the OP, if you're looking at the axis/edge because of pricepoint, you get what you get with those and options are pretty limited. Up the numbers a bit and you can step into a completely customizable gun right now.
FAL, is the stock on your stevens really weak? Tried to use a tricep strap and it tilted the receiver/barrel pretty far. Almost made my crosshair look like an X. I may end up buying an aftermarket stock and changing bolt/barrel for 2 custom guns :chuckle:
-
save your money and buy a good quality rifle. you'll spend more in the long run on the cheap one. :twocents:
-
I like Savages... Middle to upper lines. Although I don't own one. The AXIS just doesn't cut it for me when the Tikka T3, Rem 770(?), Marlin XL7, offer so much more in the near price point.

I have owned many savages. some good and some terrible. one of my favorites is the model 10 in 22-250. one of the most accurate rifles i've ever owned.

The factory stock is worse than Gumby, so I swapped it out for a Laminated Thumbhole Tundra Deluxe from Stockysstocks. Way Mo Betta now :chuckle:
If you want a really good barrel look at the CBI barrels from Northland Shooters Supply, Jim Briggs is the man you need to contact......good stuff Maynard!

I am pretty sure you are thinking of a 770 combo there, that would be the cheapest I have heard of in quite a while on a 700 by at least $100.

No, I am not. I purchased a mate blued .308 ADL SPS with the Remington 3-9 scope, bases and rings for 369.00 and th same rifle in stainless chambered in .300 Win mag for 439.00 witch I used as the donor rifle to build my 450 Ultra Magnum. Both rifles have a synthetic stock that looks just like the new SPS but with a blind magazine.
-
I just called our local Bi-Mart(509) 884-1141. The sale is off on the blued matte Rem700 scope combo and the current price is $389.00 they have a .270 and a 30-06 on hand but have many other calibers they can order in from their warehouse for the same price. The Rem700 stainless with the scope combo is currently $439.00, they have one in 30-06 and can order one in from the warehouse in whatever long action caliber that is available. A friend picked up a .300 Ultra mag in the combo for 439.00 in stainless at the same time I bought my .300 Winnie donor.
I have a standing order/ reservation for the next stainless Rem700 combo in .300 Ultra Mag their warehouse gets. Already have a HS Stock and bottoms metal waiting for it. $439.00
-
That is cheap! How are the stocks on those older adl models?
-
It's not a older ADL model, it's new production. Here is a picture of the stock and take off barrel from the last one I purchased for $439.00, I believe it's a Limbsaver recoil pad?( Correction, the recoil pad is marked "Remington Super Cell", which came out with the new SPS's ) I tried to find the rifle on the Remington home page but they just list the SPS. This has a new SPS style stock but it's a ADL, it's a smoking deal, I just take the scope, bases and rings off and sell it all for $40.00 on the local forums. The scope is just a basic 3x9 marked Remington on the adjustment covers. I shot this 300 Winnie, 30 or so times before sent it off to have a rifle built on the action and the recoil pad was nice. You can't beat the price!
When the local Bi-Mart sold out the last of the matte blue older ADL's. I purchased several for 299.00, a .270 and a 06. I used them for the actions and custom builds.

That say's it all right there!
-
i have had my axis for 2 years got the scope combo . i have put better then 600 rds down it and never had a problem . every body can talk them down but for the money their a good buy . sure the scope is crap but go buy a better one, their not a bad rifle . and very reliable and light good for long hikes . just my 2 cents
-
Give it up. You're not going to change their minds when they refer to Savage's as cheap. :dunno: Just keep smiling and shooting small groups...
Model 14 American Classic .308 Win
Model 11 .308 Win
Model 110 .243 Win
and a Remington Model 7 in .260 Win that I love, but it just can't shoot like the Savages.
-
The savage axis/edge is a bottom line rifle from a quality firearm company. THEY ARE MADE TO BE CHEAP, PERIOD !!!! They are not a $400, $500, or even a $350 rifle, they are made to fit into the sub $300 range, and they do a great job at it.
Do they have cheap stocks, yes, do they have cheap triggers, yes, do they shoot small groups, YES, are they reliable, yes. $100 dollars gets you a different quality of rifle, no matter what brand. If you want to buy a rifle that is low cost, accurate, and reliable the Axis is it, you could get a POS 770 Remington but they are such garbage Remington is embarrassed by them, or should be. All the Axis is a slightly modified 10/110 to be super efficient to build, cutting corners HAS to happen. Why do you think BiMart sells 700's from $389 all the way to over $1,000, cuz it costs more to build a better anything. Otherwise Coopers would be selling for $400 bucks.
So stop comparing them to much higher quality rifles. Do you complain about people who can only afford a Civic when a Lexus is a better vehicle?
Remember, your Remington 700's are POS compared to a lot of rifles, but no one says they don't do what they are supposed to do.
BTW, you can't put an accutrigger on a non AT rifle, period, unless you want to spend more time and money than it is worth in customizing the receiver to accept it. And I know some dumb **** will do it just to say I am wrong, whatever.
-
A lot of people can't cough up $1000 for a hunting rifle (or $800, $600, or even $500!) As far as "cheap" rifles go, it sounds tough to beat the Axis/Edge. Although, I've heard great things about the Marlin XLs as well. Merry Christmas to all... :)
-
Just shot it today for her first time.
All i can say, is she LOVED it! I like it as well! Solid, light, ACCURATE, and the recoil was fine for her, even after a box of shells, she said it didnt kick! I am really impressed! I know its no 2k gun, but a first time gun, for a 14yr girl, its hers, and shes proud.
The bad, i do need to change the trigger, have to swap out the new scope i got her, and i dont like how the bolt is stiff on the pull up, after a shot.
Other than that, i think she will like it for many years!
Hoping Montana will pick our name this year, and her dreams come true!
Now for graduation plans!!!!(I get to go too) :tung:
-
Nice! All of that sounds good. As far as the bolt stiffness on pulling up, it will get a smidge better with shooting it. But it's a function of the design. That's how the gun gets cocked.
-
This is my 4th bolt action, understand its a function of the rifle.
Never had the bolt so tight at the first pull up, the rest of the action works very smooth. Just never experienced this with any others i own.
-
I thought most others cocked it on the way down? I wasn't trying to insult your intelligence. I just knew it was a bit of a shock on my stevens. I never remembered any other bolts charging on the way up like that.
-
My A bolt, X bolt, M 700 and all 4 of my Savages all cock going up.. :twocents:
