Title: The best choise... .308 vs .270
Post by: tatatumpi on November 25, 2011, 10:55:09 PM
What's the best choice for an all around NW rifle? Deer, Elk, Bear ... are  the name of the game. .300 too much for deer? 30-06 is a consideration also. I'm ready to buy!

Thanks for your help.

A 300 is not to much for a deer, but to much for a lot of shooters   270 win or 270wsm is a outstanding choice.

There is a reason that the 30-06  is one of the most popular cartridges for big game in the north west. Can't go wrong with the 308 either. There have been plenty of Bear and Elk killed with 270's too. (skilled shooters).

I have a remington 300 ultra mag and it does fantastic on deer. I shot my buck last year at 300 yrds and hit it perfectly
behind the shoulder and there was barely any meat damage. This year I shot my buck at 100 yrds behind
the shoulder and same outcome as before. It does a awesome job!!! My wife shoots a 270 and between
the two rifles i would choose both for deer hunting!!! Any rifle could mess a deer up bad, But when the
bullet is placed right you should have great outcomes with whatever you shoot!! Just my  :twocents:

There's really no significant difference between the 270, 308, and 30-06. What one will do, so will the other. I like the 270 Winchester myself, but I definitely wouldn't say it's better than the 308. I would decide if you want a short action rifle or a long action. If short action you'll want the 308, long action you'll get the 270.

I personally look at long term ammo pricing. I'd rather be able to shoot a few thousand rounds every 6 months than have a super sweet rifle I'm not great at shooting.  :twocents:  That's why I'm leaning towards the .308 for my all arounder.

Any of them would be a good choice.

Long action 30-06 or .270. Short action .308 or 7-08.

.270win, 7mm-08,, .280, 308, 30-06, All big time winners. All will work with out problem. My cow elk dropped like a sack of rocks with one shot from my 270win this year, and she was running. Find a rifle you like, and look at some reloading manuals, ask buddys if you can shoot some of these cartridges and make your choice!

I have a 300 win mag, 270 and a 308.  I have shot plenty of deer with the 300 and 270.  I have shot one elk with each 270 and 300.  I love both of those guns and can't go wrong with either.  I just added the 308 to the collection and haven't got any kills with it yet

If you learn your gun and your animals vital areas it is as said above a personal choice. I have seen more green horn shooters hit in the eye from scopes that had no clue on how to shoot safely. Pick a gun the fits you and one of the three calibers and head to the range so you know where you are hitting at different yardages and have fun in the process. It works.

Got both and used both and they work just fine.  Can't go wrong with either one, just what ever you prefer. :dunno:  If you can't decide then just get both and tell the wife they had a sale two for one, buy one get the other half off or something. :dunno: :chuckle:

Thank you everyone for your advise and suggestions. It is very very awesome to hear everyone's opinion, I personally learned a lot! I have decided to go with a Tikka T3 Lite .308.... I do like the variety of choices with the bullets and the availability of military surplus prices, which will allow me to practice a lot more. I believe this will suit me well. I wish I had the $$$ to buy both calibers :)

Now the problem is where to find this rifle, FOR A GOOD PRICE.

:yeah:

I'm glad someone else thinks like I do! The cost of a rifle pales in comparison to the cost of being good with it. I really would like one of those but I got something more in the "cool" factor in my opinion in the works. Have fun with that gun. Pretty sweet deal tikka has with em.

Yeah, its a shame to get a very accurate rifle with a decent trigger right out of the box. I can't believe someone would do that especially when it costs well under a grand. FOR SHAME!!!
