Things have been really slow what with the weather and all. I just got some traps out about two weeks ago and have been cussing the weather, lack of sign/ lack of animals and especially cage traps. Been catching almost nothing. Today though did pretty good. Caught an otter, a beaver, a muskrat and a pretty nice bobcat.
16 sets out. I'll try to get some pictures, no guarantee. Camera an I don't get along.

Good Job guys - I need to invest in some cages myself. Just started another Beaver ADC job. This is the 5th or 6th time I have been to this particular place. They were really doing some damage this time, haven't seen it that bad since the first time I went in 8 to 10 years ago. Small little creak that will run through a 12" culvert for flow, and I bet they had 10 acres covered in water with it.

Good morning not to busy in the shed myself Bruce but just keep trying.

Adam, it looks like you are pulling away from me on beaver. Not happy with the way my traps are doing on otter so I pulled most of them and am going to do a little modification.
Looks like my new cat traps are a failure too so back to the drawing board there also. :bdid:
-
Bruce,
ya i am doing good on beaver but i would like to have more otters, i need to do some work on different traps on the off season. the other thing is i might stop trapping beavers soon the last couple i caught were pretty bit up. see ya on the 17th of march!!!
-
Breeding season for otter starts around the 1st of march so they should be moving then if you have some traps that will catch them.
-
bruce,
what do you think is the issue with your swim throughs?
-
bruce,
what do you think is the issue with your swim throughs?
It has to do with the length between the doors. Most of my traps are 10 x 10 x 48. I put in 14" doors so they would have the proper slant. That means that when set it is only 20" between the doors which means 10" on each side of the trigger.
I think otter are either going fast enough when they spring the trap that they get their nose under the door in front of them and wedge out of the trap or the door behind them is falling on their shoulders allowing them to back out.
Also if the otter gets his nose a ways by the trigger before he springs it maybe he's only 5" away from wedging the door open.
I base this on the fact that all the otter I am catching are small otter. I think the longer the otter is the more likely they can jam the door like I described. I know something is in the trap because the trigger will be knocked completely down and no debris in the trap. Nearby fresh otter sign at times is the last clue.
I also think it would help to speed the trap doors up.
My solution, 10" doors and a stronger spring in the doors to increase the speed of the doors.
I built a couple of 12 x 12 x 48 and I think I'll junk them. The taller the trap the longer the door and less room in the trap. That just makes the problem worse.
I'm actually thinking when I make more I'll try 10 x 8 x 48 or 12 x 8 x 48
Anyway that's my theory.
-
Bruce,
I think i have had some of that same problem, what do you think about putting a rubber fish on the trigger or wired above the trigger to get them to slow down to get it off? haven't tried it yet but i might on monday.
-
Any thing is worth a try. :jacked:

You need to get with it. The last receiving dates for the auctions are days away.
NAFA or FHA are where I would send it.
Any local buyers won't want to take them after the last receiving dates for the auctions.
FHA agent is closest to you. There last receiving date is probably the only one you can make anyway, 4/20/12. Go to www.furharvesters.com for agent contact information. It's at American Legend in Tukwilla. They may want it soomer then the posted last receiving date so you need to get on it.
