Title: A busy/successful season.
Post by: buckmaster_wa on November 28, 2011, 09:37:50 AM
Well I thought that I would have a hard time filling tags this year because I am in the middle of building a new home.
But It still turned out to be a good season. I had to work opening weekend of rifle deer season for the first time in 13 years.  :bash: So on Tuesday I got the day off and decided to take my nephew hunting. It was his first trip hunting and he was expecting to just get a doe.
On our way in to our planned sitting location, we seen a few does and a small buck but didn't have any shot opportunity. We sat down for about 10 minutes and out walks this little buck 100 yards below us. It took me a couple minutes to confirm that he was a legal buck and as soon as i said hes legal, the .243 barks and the buck drops in his tracks. My nephew was ecstatic.

That weekend I decided to take the wife hunting with me on a productive piece of land that I have permission on. We see 5 legal bucks the first day but can not close the distance to get any shots. The next day a couple buddies meet up with us
and the wife decides to hang at camp. We got on a couple legal muleys and I even managed to get a shot off but didn't connect. In the middle of the day we decide to try another piece of dirt. My buddy hikes down a big ridge and 20 minutes into the hunt he shoots a small 4pt. I hike back to the truck and tell him I am going to take the lower road so we
can drag the deer down hill to the truck. As I start up the hill towards where the buck had died my other hunting partner asks " Shouldn't you take your gun?". Well I guess so I say. And I hike back down to the truck and grab my gun. Thankfully so, because I ended up going up the wrong canyon and this nice big 4pt comes running over the ridge and comes running right at me. I take a knee and drop him at 100 yards. Man I
would have been kicking myself if I hadn't taken my gun. lol       Thanks again Phil!!

Nice buck Dan.  Glad to see him on the ground.  I hunted that buck for 3 days with a bow and never could get closer than 200yds. Oh and I love the beard.  Now all you need to do is grow a mullet.  Please grow a mullet.  Now where are the late season pics.   :yeah:

Then a couple weeks later we head off on our out of state hunt. I wasnt sure I was going to get time to go with the house and all. But pacific power takes there sweet time to do anything so I ended up getting some time to head over. We get to our destination and get camp set up. We go out for the evening hunt. I see a group of five little bucks. I cross a ridge and a 140'' full velvet 4pt steps out at 100 yards. I contemplate shooting him for a minute and decide to pass. As soon as I set up my spotting scope I find a good buck. He looks like he would break the 160'' mark that I was hoping for. Twenty minutes later and a few shots later. He is on the ground. He fell down a 40ft cliff when I shot him and I am expecting him to have broken points when I walk up on him. Lucky for me he is all intact. We dont get any field photos because I left the camera at camp. The next three days we continue to fill tags. We ended up with four mature bucks. The biggest going 168'' and mine going 163''. Definitely  a great trip. Theres also some pics of some of the bucks we seen after we were tagged out.

We also had a good late whitetail hunt. My dad, BLRman and his dad all tagged out. There were 13 bucks seen in two days. BLRman has the pics on his camera. Hopefully he can post them up.

If you are waiting on his technical skills you're gonna be waiting along long time.   :chuckle:

Right on. That's a lot of deer meat...and a lot of skull boiling and bleaching. Congrats. And if your Montana buck scores 163, I need you to come score my Montana buck; I like your way of measuring better  :chuckle:  Just kidding. Those Dayton tags were as good to you guys as they were to us.

My bad Josh. I just looked at the score sheet and my buck only scored 162 7/8''      So I rounded up to 163''.      Lol. Maybe next year I will break the 170'' mark.

Dude looks like your freezer is full!  No need to buy a hunting liscence next year. Time to focus on sheds.
