Title: Toutle warning
Post by: Crunchy on December 01, 2011, 07:13:09 PM
Well I get camp set up this afternoon and decide to get in the evening hunt.  I park my truck at the gate even though its open I wanted to hike in quitely.  As I go up the road a blue older toyota passes me with couple of shady characters in camo.  I was tempted to go back to my truck, cause they didn't look right.  Well I didn't.  Two hrs later I find my window smashed.  Nothing missing but my axe that was in the bed of my truck.  Not a good start to my hunt.  Then I couldn't chop kindling cause no axe.  Had to soak the wood with lighter fluid to get wood stove going, and almost  caught myself on fire lol.  Almost packed up and went home.

Sometimes I say to myself: "Self, if I shot that guy right now, what are the odds of getting caught?" "Not great odds, self, but not worth the risk."

Keep an eye out they will be back. Sucks when you wait all year to hunt but have to keep one eye on your stuff but it;s not other hunters it;s the guys looking for something to sell for there habit. Hope you get a good one close to the road.

Crunchy, sorry to hear about this.

I fear one of these days we will hear of a couple of dead thieves who displayed a weapon to a hunter. With our media, they will make it look like hunters are the problem...

Yeah but RCW will back us up. A lot of ppl that carry don't even realize the rights and responsibility involved in carry in this state.

Was you blocking a open road, doesn't sound like it since you said they drove past you.  If you ever want to do a insurance job on your vehicle just block a road during Elk season on the Weco tree farm.  I've had gas dumped all over in the bed of my truck because we beat somebody to a bull and they didn't want me to have a place to put the meat, also had branches draped all over truck and finger marks ran down the mud in my paint. Ill never block a road though, was with my brothers buddy once when we did on a spur road and they made sure when they popped his tires that he didnt have enough spares.  Sorry about your luck man, it sucks when your property gets destroyed.

Not blocking any roads. Just bad luck on my part.

Btw Crunchy if your from out of town let me know if you need to borrow an axe or something man, I'm close and can help in any way I can.  I could run one up to you and we could just pick a spot to hide it and I could go get it later after you break camp.

Nothing is better than seeing a fellow hunter help another one out.

I despise jerks that do this cause they think it is fun, cruel or easy.  They will never be trustworthy, at work, home or in the woods.  Sorry man :sry:

Had they opened my door the alarm would have sounded.  The axe was laying in the bed so breaking the window was for kicks.  I had some small stuff they could have stolen, but opted not to.  Thanks for the axe offer, but the rest of guys are here tomorrow so they will have one. Maybe when they drove by I should have pointed to the forty cal on my hip.  Might have made them think twice.

Careful, they may consider that brandishing. Just think what they woulda done while you were distracted with the cops.

I have no doubt, 100% know for sure that this would be affective, and wouldn't take long.  But before it goes down your going have to be prepared for what it might lead to, and that could be whole heap of trouble for you.  Tempers flaring and guns is a bad combo.  Always thought this would be a good sting for a gamie to set up.  Maybe be better for you to not come out of the brush, but to sit there with a video camera and tape the whole thing and their truck plates.

Also let me know if you need anything.  Have lots of firewood to share. I had
a game camera stolen this year on private property in that unit.  Thats alright
have cameras back up.  Will catch them this time.

So if you were to block the road and video it and turn it in would you get points? Otherwise you're just gonna get some messed up property claim to file...

I saw them yesterday!!! They were driving up the 4250. I thought they looked like creepers. I even made a comment to my buddy on how shady they looked. Sorry to hear about your loss. I will be back down several days next week. I will be looking for them.... you can bet on that!

Would be funny as hell if all of a sudden they were surrounded by a bunch of pissed off hunters :chuckle: Wonder what they'd do then. Hmmmm, bashed out windows, flattened tires numberous bruises about their bodies from a bad fall of course. :chuckle: Not to mention a long walk outta the woods.

Akirkland you got it right.  I was parked off the 2700 when it happened and the 4250 is the main way in and out.  I just figured out they stole my bullpacs pack frame.

That's crappy man. Sorry to hear about that. I'm gonna have to start taking stuff outta my vehicle from now on. I'm afraid it will entice them more than an empty dirty xterra. I'm always a target tho due to my windshield sticker they won't let us remove.  :bash:

You know one of them picked up the axe  and then knocked out your window while walking back to his truck.  Tooo bad...  It is also most worth support the local LEO who would want to exercise a stake out and then really smoke them when they did the smash and grab.

In honor of what happened to you I am making an anti-theft device. It involves a piece of paper, a marker, and tape. I will post it here for all to use:
step 1: gather supplies
step 2: use marker to make shapes on paper. I used the following shapes: WARNING TO THIEVES and VANDALS: YOU ARE IN RANGE!
Step 3: drive to parking location
step 4: Park
step 5: Use tape to adhere paper with designs to window. I prefer masking tape to avoid residue.
Step 6: (optional) Stay near truck but out of site and keep eye on truck. Fire at invisible game when someone attempts thievery or vandalism.

Last year when hunting in there myself and another member on the site got our helmets stolen. I had my little brother with me so all together we had 3 helmets taken.

I would add some other shapes so it looked like: WARNING TO VANDALS AND THIEVES:  I CAN SEE MY TRUCK AND YOU ARE IN RANGE

Aside from the risk of it getting stolen also, I have been thinking about stashing a trail cam next to my rig so its out of sight, but still covers the area around my rig.  A flash model would not be wise of course, but mine is the IR model so it would be at minimal risk of discovery in low light conditions.

I really doubt that any of these dirtbags that cruise these areas looking to mess with parked rigs would even consider the possibility of a hidden camera.  Hide it good, cover any of the indicator lights that may come on when the sensor is tripped with tape and you may have just what you need for a report if there are any problems while you are away.

Also, would give you a good idea of how many rigs come and go through that particular area/road.
