Thinkin about getting a pair of Whites Packs here soon...anyone have any experience with these? Im lookin at gettin the Elk Guides. I've worn Whites boots for years, just never the winter packs..thanks!
-
Had several pair of White's but switched to the Schnee's a few year back and I like them a whole lot better. They seem to be more comfortable for longer wearing and fit better than the Whites.

I have a pair of Where's pacs and love them.
-
I would STRONGLY suggest looking at Hoffman's pacs. Whites and nicks beat hoffmans on work boots, Hoffman's smokes em on pacs. I like seeing made in Idaho on my soles more than made in China.
-
:yeah: there was a story somewhere about 2 guys stranded in wilderness during winter. Guy wearing Hoffmans was 100% when rescued, guy wearing Whites lost his toes. :o
-
I have had a pair since '95, been re-soled twice and replaced the liners 3 times. They are the best pacs I've ever owned, wouldn't trade them for any other brand.
-
i have a pair of whites elk guide pacs, and they are a solid pac boot. i also have a pair of whites smokejumpers that i wear almost daily. only complaint is that it takes me a little bit of time to get used to the air bog type sole of the pacs after wearing the vibram soled smokejumpers all summer long
i dont have any experience with schnees or other brands but for the money and what i use the whites pacs for i couldnt be happier and have yet to get cold feet in the whites elk guides
-
Thanks for the replies! for those of you with pac's did you go with the brown or black? thanks again for the info!
-
I have brown and black in whites and brown in hoffmans.
-
I have a pair of whites cork pac boots went to buy hoffmans but they didn't have my size, wish I would have waited them whites are HEAVY
-
Mine are black and gray

Me too! even though the Whites are made in Korea. Not much better, but how many on this site own a Hyundai, or Kia?
-
My old whites (yukon survivor) are killer, well made boots. My elk guides...not so much, the rubber checked up and cracked in two seasons. My hoffmans have nailed down soles and better rubber. The leather on all of them are comparable. I would get the extra sole that goes in the liner to keep your foot higher off the snow.
-
For those that do not know, hoffman's are made in Kellogg right by Dave smith.
-
anyone have Kenetrek pacs?
-
I love my whites pack boots
-
Had a pair of Whites and now have Schnees. I like the Schnees a bit more there, lighter, easer to break in and less expensive. However I believe the whites last longer.
I’m always open to a superior product (Kenetrek or Hoffman’s)? :dunno:

Are just the soles not made in Spokane?? or?? :dunno:

They buy the shells and sew them on their leather....as does hoffmans and schnees, Hoffman's are either stripped and resoled or a bare shell altogether....I don't know. I do know that the Hoffman's are different feeling rubber than that whites, much like my old whites....which are at least ten years old and still soft. My elk guides broke the rubber like it froze and shattered. I was going to rebuild them, but just bought a pair of Hoffman's to try. They are great. I will buy whites and nicks work boots still, but never the pacs.....Hoffman's rock.
-
Here is a pic of my Hoffman's. I will dig out my whites and show you how they failed.

Wore White's for years and the new ones are not as good as the old. And the White's pac boots were the COLDEST
DAMN pac's I ever wore. as far as work boots if you try Nick's you will never go back to White's.
Schnee's would be my choice for pac's. :twocents:
never tried Hoffman's but will.
-
anyone have Kenetrek pacs?
i have had a pair for 3 years now and are very comfortable. i can hike in the all day. havent had any quality issues with them
-
Here are my older whites with made in the USA shells

I may have tossed the elk guides. I will look in my shop tomorrow....trust me, hoffman's and old whites are better than the new elk guides.

Been wearing White's workboots (smokejumpers) for around 10 years and tried Nicks once, i'll never go back to Nicks...I get my White's custom made.....but this is another debate im sure could go on for ages...my newest are brown rough out's with honey vibram sole's and are more comfortable than running shoes...
-
Highcountry-thanks for the pics and info! I will definately look into the hoffmans.....do you Sno-Seal yours out of the box? again, thanks for the info!
-
I have a lifetime supply of beeswax so i use it. I am a nixwax and obnaufs (sp) kind of guy. Pac uppers last forever....the shells are what crap the bed.
-
Gotcha..I usually use obenauf's on my White's, but have heard sno-seal has other waterproofing qualities for the leather on the uppers?...?
-
I bought my Whites at Clarks in Colville about 1995 and they made it til last winter cougar hunting with Mulehunter. I was tracking a cat and I felt this wet cold spot. I looked down and I had ripped a side wall, vertically, so it was a cut or puncture, not a seam. That was 2010. Thats pretty good for a pair of boots. I had gone through 3 sets of felts.
I will either replace them or try a new company. I liked the looks of some boots in kenetreks. Now I guess I need to investigate Hoffmans.
-
I had some whites but got sick of their weight and bulk...they barely fit into my showshoes. I got rid of them ond picked up a pair of LaCrosse pac boots. I like them pretty well and have put lots of miles following the hounds with them. This year I bought a pair of Meindl Alaska hunters...we'll see how they work for the snow.
-
I wear size 14, and yes they have a problem with fitting in my snowshoes and closet. :chuckle:
-
Doug, good luck with the new shells, they are cheap. My old whites are still soft, my elk guides did just like yours, but in shorter time. Mine basically rotted. I doubt my Yukon survivors will ever give up they are very soft and pliable, as are the hoffs.

Those 12 inch?
-
Yes.
-
Sweet, I changed my order to the 12's. Thanks again for the help!! i'll post a pic when they get here!
-
has anyone here ever tried the L.L. Bean pack boots? They look pretty nice and have a lifetime warranty.
-
I am moving to cork boots for this.
-
I've had my Hoffman felt voyagers 12inch, for a couple days now and I love them! I have taken them for a couple walks around a mile or two each time and they are comfy as heck! I can see little to no break in with these, and although I am a White's boots guy, I can see that these are quality boots... my feet get cold easy and it was around 14 degrees the other night when out and about and felt nothin...will give an update with snow and hiking, but if your in the market for a pac boot i'd check out Hoffman's boots for sure!
