There are big mature blacktails everywhere, you just have to put in your time and find a good local area. Find the little hidie holes that everyone passes up.

I agree, good little blacktail "nooks" don't have to be all that big and can be just about anywhere in W. Wa. I've seen good bucks in every Western Wa. County I've been to. It also depends on your definition of "best". Some don't like the Vail experience, while there's others who really enjoy it, it's a good place to take kids to learn to hunt. If you are after a toad, your probably better off passing on the Vail general season and hiking behing a Wheyerhauser, Green Diamond, Hancock, or other timber company gate.

It all depends on your definition of best ~ I've never spent more than 45 minutes on the islands shooting my second deer (I've had the tag every year it's been available) but if your looking for a BC deer private ground around king/snohomish county or whatcom county is where it's at.

Where I hunt! :chuckle: The best place I have found is Urlost mountain near unknown creek inbetween Oregon and British Columbia.  Tons of BC's there but are a little difficult to find.  C'mon you cannot give up blacktail holes, they are worth their weight in gold!  I have been A$$H :crap:LED twice with spots and now only a few know the hot spots.

for archery, i would think, without a doubt, kitsap county. lots of green belts and closed gate trail systems. not too many folks hunt them seriously out here, so they get fairly big along with a good nutritious soil thats not constantly leached by rain.  the biggest blacktail buck i have ever seen was on this horse farm that i worked on. freaking huge! at least a 130 buck. kitsap county shows up pretty well in the pope and young book.

The biggest blacktail bucks I ever saw was down by pe-ell west of chehalis. We saw huge bucks in there and good buck numbers. I hunted the road heading west out of Pe-ell right when it crossed the county line on north side of road. Great hunting area, not to many people. Plenty of deer without to far walking in.

If you go down around Pe-Ell, dont leave your truck unatended to long, or your camp for that matter ;) :hunt2:

It's all about finding those untouched areas wether it be the deep dark roadless areas or the not so obvious local honey holes.  I'm partial to exploring the large blocks of roadless areas especially in the Gifford Pinchot. A couple of the areas I hunt have a buck to doe ratio that's probably 1 buck to 3 does.  It's all about being willing to do your research and leg work and leave the luck thing to all the Slobs that prefer to down a six pack while driving a hundered miles checking all the easy clear cuts.  Don't get me wrong we all need a certain degree of luck but you can definitely put the odds in your favor if you're willing to put in some serious homework.

Just my $0.02,
Coon

I've also seen some really nice bucks 20-22", mature and heavy outside Mt Ranier Park, by outside I mean within 15-20 miles of the Park. They never seem to get harvested, either hide out on private land, or head up into the Park once hunters hit the woods in Sept. Talked to an oldtimer once who harvested some really nice bucks by packing in to just outside the Park boundary by trail, I believe it's the Wilderness area, hard earned bucks.

Missionbigbull08,  did you see the buck that was poached by the two kids in Duvall last year?  I have seen some nice bucks around the area but this area does not have the quality it used to.  Way to much poaching going on in the area.
