Title: MONSTER Steelhead!!
Post by: trippledigitss on December 09, 2011, 09:58:05 AM
So I dont know if any of you have seen this before but I just found this picture while browsing on the web. It was linked from Sweaty Waders on a Blog called Moldy Chum. I couldnt find anything on the background story from either site  other than its from Kispiox, B.C. , so I dont know what the deal is but its a GORGEOUS fish no?

Big and UGLY if you ask me.

It is pretty dark but I think its beautiful simply for a fish that size surviving! Now if it was the color of the 24# my boy got (see pic in "1st Solo Steelhead" thread, then it would be even more amazing. :twocents:

I'm not taking anything away from the fish.  I would love to catch one that size.  I just do not find it beautiful.  A beautiful steelhead to me is one that is so bright that it looks more white than chrome.

No, I got cha Big - completely understandable, I knew what you were saying and I agree with you. To me the color may not be beautiful but the fish still is simply because it exists ya know? :dunno: But the color of that fish my son caught is so much more nice looking, those colors really are beautifull!

All of those big steelies from up on the coast of BC are summer runs.  Those things come in during July and August and dont spawn until the springtime.  You would have to be getting them down pretty low and early for them to be two tone steelies.

Anything over 20 is a trophy in my book even if it is a little colored up like those Kispiox and other BC tribs fish tend to be.

Do they even clip them up there in BC or have the no retention/out of water rule? Either way, that size has GOT to be a nate no?

It's only unethical to pull wild fish out of the water when the regs say you can't.   It's perfectly acceptable everywhere else.

Haha - well I'd say switch unethical with illegal, cuz there are many guys who will say its unethical to treat a wild fish that way no matter what. I'd say best to keep them in the water or only have them out very briefly unless you plan on bonking it. Now bonking a wild fish, even when legal will stir a whole 'nother pot!  :chuckle:

That's a once in a hundred lifetimes fish. And I LOVE the colors! Some of those B.C. rivers have such strong runs of fish it is no big deal to kill a few. Our rivers COULD be that way but politics are killing our fish.

Not sure what the heck you guys are talking about with the colors  :dunno: I suppose all of you are from the westside. Over here on the eastside most of the bigger steelhead caught are that color  and the males get even darker. I love the look of that red stripe down the side!

That's a beauty.  It's hard to tell the size of a fish in a pic unless you have a known reference.  That guy is slightly long arming the fish, which will always make them look bigger.  If you knew that the fisherman was 110 lbs soaking wet, then that fish would look really big.  But if that guy weighs 300 lbs and has size 3xl meat hooks, then that's a 30 lb steely.  I would guess that fish to weigh 25+

Here's my biggest steelhead, a 25 pounder from the Thompson in BC.  For reference, I am 6'4" tall, and weigh 260.  Fish always look small when I hold them.

Never ever did I think I would say this... but that ain't a true fish, IMO anyways... blue line on the back. Way too unreal considering the guy's length.. I dunno, but I'm calling  :liar: If not.. great fish.

C'mon man.. us drysiders love the stripers! That's all we see. Any steelhead is beautiful! ;) Fished the Nestucca this last weekend. So strange to hear about "too dark a fish - if it was legal we wouldn't keep it"... "fish are stinking up the banks"... Garsh.. I wish we had that problem. You Wetside dudes have all the fun

I've caught one chromer in my life.. and holy smokes was it hot. I'll give you that.

I agree with you there Hyde! Here is a pic of a 12# I caught last year on the snake. Looking at the 2 photos I wouldn't be able to tell my fish is half the size of yours!

What - are you guys saying, its not a real photo? Come on, I found it on the internet, it HAS to be real! :chuckle: I dont know what you mean about the blue line but I can see the shadow of the fish on the guys legs & stuff. I dont know about the size, long arm, etc, but it looks huge to me.

MD - that is the biggest 12#'er I've ever seen! I would have guessed high teens?  :dunno:

that pic is a few years old...it was impressive until the rest of the photo set was revealed, of the guy dropping it on the rocks several times.  the fish was probably out of the water several minutes, not just a little bit for a quick photo.

When I see that stripe on a steelhead.  There are two things that go through my head.  1.  It was most likely caught on the eastside.  2. I might keep him to through in the smoker.  I've been invited to the east side to fish steelhead a couple time.  I just say no thanks.  I don't have the heart to tell them that I don't want to fish for half dead fish.  There is nothing like catching a 6 - 8 pound hen steelhead with sea lice still on her.  That is a fight you will never forget.

I've only fished for steelhead on the eastside once a couple years ago. I was fishing below the dam up on the Snake I think? Ice Road dam, or Icicle dam or something like that outside of Pasco by some DNR campground. But I only got one small "steelhead", actually no matter what it was a large rainbow since it was under 20", and it was chrome, chrome bright. So I dont think it made the trip to salt & back yet, too small, or if it even ever would but it was so silver it sticks in my mind to this day. But I dont think they are really "half dead" over there simply because the color are they?  :dunno: I'm mean its not like salmon where they come up, spawn & die. They turn around and make the trip back out to salt & then back again, so there must be alot of life still left in them. But everyone has their druthers and if you like chrome and dont want to make the trip over the hump for them, well, that's certainly your right!

I have caught some 12 - 15 pound old summer run on this side before.  And if you like reeling in a rock.  Then yeah its fun and you'll never forget it.  That's for sure.  My guess is you have never caught right out of the ocean chrome before.  There is a huge difference.

I work with a guy that grew up fishing the snake.  He kept talking about how great it was.  Then he caught some chromers over here.  Now the only thing that he has to say about the snake is the fish over there are bigger on average.

6-8 lb chrome steelhead is something I could easily forget. No need for a pic even. I have caught booted up summers on this side that have fought better than any little chrome cookie cutter runt.  :twocents: :stirthepot: :chuckle:

6 to 8 lb chromers are midget fish. They don't count till they reach the teens. 8)

They might only way 6-8 pounds but atleast they fight the whole time.  :IBCOOL:  Instead of 2 or 3 runs, then you reel in dead weight.  :hello:

I will be truthful and tell you that I have caught maybe a dozen in the teens with the biggest being 17lbs.  But I don't really remember fighting any of them.  Where I can remember catching tons of those cookie cutters that did nothing but dance on the water.

Come to think of it i've caught more than a dozen in the teens.  About 6 or 8 years ago the green river in cowlitz county was open a couple years in row early for springers.  So me and a buddy fished it pretty hard.  In those couple years I caught more than a dozen wild winter run steelhead that were in the teens while trying to get a springer.  Never did get a springer in there.  And none of them fought as good as any of the chrome brite hachery summer run that I caught in there.

Last time i checked the steelhead have to swim right by me here in the lower river before they get to the east side. My biggest this year was a chrome 18 pound hatchery steelhead i am sure it was destined for idaho.

I saw 2 over 20. Both chrome.

I got 77 summer steelhead this year. Anytime you guys wanna come down i will show you how to catch some chrome steel.

And that pic of the fish in the original post is well over 30. If i remember correctly it is a skeena fish. I wish i could take the time to fish that river someday.
