I think the coyote madness contest is a great idea and sounds fun, I was sitting here thinking when shed hunting season picks up here in a couple few months that it would be fun to start a similar contest with finding sheds. I see Bone that you tally finds already as it is. Idk, food for thought, guys could team up and of coarse have set rules. Maybe a point system based on actual points on the antlers, whites, and browns, with of coarse a handicap for westside since Blacktail tend to have less points then Whitetail and Muledeer, same with Rosies vs Rockys. maybe an extra half point for a (as it layed) field photo, Maybe have prizes for biggest shed based on specie, best set, or uniqueness of the antler. Or maybe no prizes at all, just bragging rights. Sounded fun to me, regardless I know ill be hitting the hillsides hard again and post pics anyways, just thought id throw it out there. Anyways until then good luck to all you yote hunters, can't wait to see the pics pour in on that thread. Also thanks BH45 for letting me tag along in that contest this year. Sorry if there is a contest that I am unaware of that is set in stone already as I am still fairly new to HW.

I'm with ya bud. I like this idea. I'll be out hunting hard for sheds this spring. Found 28 this year. I know there's guys here that do a lot better than that. I think it better to make it a single person competition instead of teams. Just my thought but count me in!
-
I like the idea, come up with some rules and pm me when you have them figured out. We'll probably need another permit and these take time to get, so get on it now if you want the permit in time to do it. :twocents:
-
rule #1 no 509 ers :chuckle:
-
I've never liked the idea because it encourages people to push harder, get out there earlier and to do unethical behavior. The animals need a break in the spring. We will be regulated in this state if folks don't settle down.

:yeah: good point! I 've neve went out and really tried to hard but have heard horror stories of sleds wheelers and wintering bucks :bdid:
-
It has its good and bad. I dont want teams, that means more people in my spots! And it wouldnt really be fair the 509ers would simply clean up!
-
If only I could snap my fingers and go back 15 years. Shed hunting was a lot of fun before it became popular and turned in to a competition.
This is the beginning of the end.
-
I wouldn't think you'd need a shed hunting permit for a contest, but the game department will do anything for more money... I don't care if we have prizes or not. It'd just be fun seeing how I'm going to be out there a lot anyways.
-
I dont like it, cmon guys if your a true shed hunter dont promote it please
-

I dont think it matters. people that are gonna get out there and hunt them are gonna be out there, the newbies probably arent gonna be hitting it very hard, i dont think that a competition on here is going to create chaos out in the wilderness. just my :twocents:
-
I wouldn't think a contest would promote people to go more, Im out as much as possible as it is already, and I think it would be the same for the other folks that hit it hard as well. I understand the winter thing, although I'm from the westside so the impact isn't as bad as the eastside. Just thought it would be fun, and would be a good way to keep up on whos finding what. As far as showing off are sheds, I think we all can agree that we like seeing them, and I'm just as proud of my small finds as my big finds. I wouldn't care if I came dead last in any category, more for fun than anything. I would hope some of you would reconsider, if not we could botch the whole idea but like I said I don't think a little HW competition will have a impact or more of a impact on wintering animals or the DFW view on us Antler hunters. Id be willing to donate a wildlife art project as a prize for the contest and will be posting my art for people to enjoy on HW shortly.

Hey whats wrong with the (509)ers :chuckle:

:yeah: It's always a shame to hear about the unethical yahoos and their antics.

Yes and these unethical yahoos will be out there regardless, we all know that. I could only hope that people participating would respect the wintering laws set by the state. With that said, the Elk in my local area never get a break, they are hunted clear through January here. I'll post some ideas and rules for a contest, if it sounds like something people want to do we can, if not it can fade out.
-
So with the risk of sounding like a newb, where are the wintering laws posted? I have never seen them in the reg's, but I have also never specifically looked for them...? I don't shed hunt besides while I'm already hunting/scouting, just curious.
-
I thinks its just certain areas with laws. Arteman id love to see your work.

I've been holding off posting pics of my art because I have nothing new, all my photos are of old stuff that are not originals, and more or less just doodles. All my newer stuff somebody else has now. I just currently got geared up with new art Supplys to begin making my own stuff, and own style, for market quality. Airbrush, compressor, projector, paints etc. I'm just now starting my first original, recreating my buddies bull he killed this year. Same bull in the thread Buddies first bull. The style ill be doing is in Acrylics with a out of focus background with airbrush and high detail subject and foreground, kinda like dougs photos, best represented by who I think is the worlds finest wildlife artist Danny O'Driscoll. If I get some of my doodles and old projects posted don't judge my quality off them as I am capable of much greater, my goal is going to be to make paintings like Danny that are photo realistic, and talking with him and learning his technique I believe I can. I will soon find out though. Ive pm'd bearpaw about starting a Wildlife Art forum as there is a Photography forum but nothing came of it.

A contest doesnt do anything for me, I get everything I need from the hunt and the shed.
-
No interest here. As bone mentioned, it'd only promote more pressure on the animals. Seems to me I've heard a lot of complaining this year on animal numbers anyway.... :dunno: :twocents:
-
I think It's enough that people post there pics here.
In a sense it does become kind of a contest. Just look at the posts!
I really don't think we need to promote the kind of pressure this can put on the herds. Nor do I think that WDFW needs any reason (contest application) to try and put some sort of shed hunting regulations in place! :twocents:
-
As an avid shed hunter I first liked the idea, but after reading through the previous posts some good points were brought up. I see no need to make an official contest. Simply posting your finds in the shed hunting section works for me.
-
I really don't see the difference between this and the very post created by bone himself and locked up top, but I'm over it already. The great bone has spoke and his flock shall follow, Im sure if he would have agreed with me, you all would have been, yea what bone said the other way lol forget the whole idea.
-
Want your binkie and go run off to the other site and see of they'll do it?
Thanks for jabbing me. Guess we weren't supposed to have a different opinion. You remind me of my wife.
-
and by the way, the experience of how the shed total post changed how people acted, MIGHT have some sort of influence on my opinion. NOTE I didn't do it again. I think they call that experience or making an informed decision, or something like that.
-
Here's artmans beautiful art work, man good work.
-
And 1 more.
-
Thanks again Martin, your a good buddy! These are for you Maverick.
-
Very Cool!
-
I think CoryTDF should get his face painted like one of these pictures....then he would be pretty.
-
Arteman, thanks for the slap in the face, but I fly solo. Grow up.

What's that all about? I make up my own mind and I have my own opinions based on my observations. :twocents:
Nice work BTW

I'm curious as to how long you've been shed hunting? It's the publicity of a contest like this that starts the gears turning in other peoples heads. I've been shed hunting since before it was popular. I can remember when figuring out where to look, what time of the year they dropped, and where the animals yarded was 75% off the work. You learned from your own experience and every once in a while word of mouth. Now you can just hop on the Internet, find all the info you need, look at pictures and background scenery in the pics. Now you've got people who call themselves "shed hunters" out there running deer and elk down with sleds and quads in an attempt to make the antlers fall off. They race in to areas that are closed off and stock pile sheds for the "opener". They set up antler traps to get that little bit of an "advantage" over the next guy, etc...
If you haven't shed hunted for that long, then I can understand how you might not be able to see how shed hunting has "evolved". It's only going to get worse, and contest like this will only speed up the process.
-
I am not a shed hunter. Not becuase I dont want to. But mainly becuase I do a lot of fishing that time of year. BUT I do have to agree with the :bdid: camp. Eventually shed hunting is going to be like the opener for modern rifle deer season...(IBA and ACH recommended) a worthless :twocents: but :twocents: none the less
-
This year is gunna be dif. with the lack of snow (which is good) we are seing bucks as high up as stormy mt. and beyond the bone is gunna be way scattered this year. Gunna be a good excersize year and the biggest plus NO SNOWMOBILERS all foot traffic this year. I think the 150 - 200 shed years are over. gunna be lucky to break 50 this year, but the deer should faire well with the lack of snow.

I wasnt going to comment about it anymore but It already is that bad jjb11b, especially the May 1st opener, but I live next to one of the best elk shed antler finding areas in the state, and I said one, I know there is others. I know where to go to get away from people and still find them though, and i know I could go tomorrow and find them, it isn't seasonal for me. I never known shed hunting to not be popular, but maybe its just my location. However, I can see how this shed antler forum with all its threads can catch the eye of new enthusiasts, maybe it all should go. Same with the deer and elk hunting forums, let's get rid of them too. Getting to be way to many hunters in the state (I'm joking). but I'm for introducing new people to the sport, kids, friends, etc. Best exercise in the world and you can do it anytime of the year. I don't keep the thats my hole mentality, if I'm running into people I go that much farther in. In fact last year we was so far in we was finding fresh drops browns, whites, and even some so old they crumbled apart when you picked them up, like a sponge. Clearly nobody goes in that far, thought i was going to die crossing a river waste deep, was about to go in when I caght myself funny with the heavy pack on and tweeked my back. Filled my chest waiters with water, froze my ass off the rest of the day, and missed a weeks work for my back. Only thing I can figure is it must be a pretty competitive thing on the eastside, everybody I run into here on the westside is very friendly. You should go give it a try Jjb11b, I have a blast doing it, and i still run to my finds like its going to grow legs and run away, its like a big kids easter egg hunt!
-
Love the idea. To bad the shed hunting elitest have spoken. :chuckle:
-
I have to agree with arteman. Why can we have a predator contest but not a shed hunting contest. More and more people are going to go predator hunting more and more. At least with so many people shed hunting there aren't bullets flying everywhere like opening modern deer. If we can't have a shed hunting contest because too many people will get into it then we shouldn't have any contest for the same reasons.

I believe the problem it would create is pushing animals before they have dropped antlers. This is when they may be at their weakest. It is not the idea of the contest but the effects it may have going to early.
-
I would think there is a big difference between putting pressure on predators and putting pressure on the herds. Being an AVID shed hunter, its difficult to self moderate or put ones own self control into effect. Contests do nothing but encourage one with competetive spirit to get out there. I used to be out there constantly, then decided enough was enough. I didn't find nearly the amount of sheds I usually do but I got to say to myself I wasn't contributing to the problem. There is a problem! The government will step in shortly becasue we aren't able to do it ourselves. DSCUBAME is one of my biggest critics and judges on here. That being so, he'd have to notice that I rarely push the animals on the winter range/spring range. Most of my photos get LONG from the target. If I shed hunt at all its whitetails, which I believe can stand the pressure better than other prey animals. Its a choice I have made. Yes there are others out there that will continue to do it, just like holding natives out of the water, shooting geese on closed days, etc, but I know what I have done. If you want to insult me because I am trying to be a good steward, all the power to you.

No I agree with you its a major problem, ill hit the hillsides before the may opener, and never go below the highwater mark on the winter range before that. You can watch these fools through binos from open spots on the hillsides or the highway chasing the herds across the river just to come out shake their antlers off and then more fools on that side chasing them back across again with their tounges hanging out the whole time, even witnessed a cow drown. I know the department is understaffed but they dont seem to care because it wouldn't take much to catch these guys. I'll use Google earth to find small pockets, draws with meadows in them where the elk feed on the other side of the highway, hardly ever bump elk, and might only find one or two antlers every time out, but I have good chances at finding fresh and older stuff and never seeing a soul because its a hell of a hike. May be the reason I only found 33 elk sheds last year, that and i literally walked myself sick and had to stop from a hernia, and my buddy continued on to find 60 something. Most these places you cant even make it to tell after the snow melt off, so the elk have made it through the rough time, but here on the westside the snow doesn't really pack up and hardly ever lingers for long, usually starts late and melts early. As far as a contest lol i am truly over it, and no I don't need my binki, not upset about it at all, in fact I don't even want to anymore. My later arguments was more about the fact that I don't think anything we do on HW is going to increase, or decrease the impact on these wintering herds anymore than it already is happening, those people will still be out. However I agree that it could draw attention to the dfw and give them some ideas about making a few extra bucks, but i see that coming soon anyways with some other states already doing it. With that all said, I believe this is one of the main reasons the quality of bulls suck in this area as a quality bull hunting area, with the way bulls grow as soon as they drop, I may be wrong but i think they can grow 4 to 6 inches a day, some dropping antlers in mid march all the way to June, so some will be growing while others are still dropping, and instead of conserving nourishment for antler growth, they are getting pushed and using it to stay alive. See a lot of bulls with weak bottoms but strong tops, as nourishment gets better.

sounds good to me.. I start looking christmas day

Ill be out shed hunting harder than ever this you. Why not just have the contest and who want to to it do it and who don't agree with don't do it?
-
We as a whole represent the hunting community and specifically what we feel is important to that. Mine is just one admin vote. I'm sure Dale will hear my voice along with others and will decide how he feels about it. No doubt with the way we are being monitored and as much lobbying effort we as a site have, these decisions are no longer taken as lightly as they may have in the past.

rule #1 no 509 ers :chuckle:
Man, I knew there would be some repercussions for hanging out with Stickslinger.
:iamwithstupid:
:chuckle:
-
I will take the repercussions and hang out with him this year :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I like the idea, come up with some rules and pm me when you have them figured out. We'll probably need another permit and these take time to get, so get on it now if you want the permit in time to do it. :twocents:
-
You'll note that was before the elitists gave him their opinion. :chuckle:
-
I still like this idea and think we should vote on it in a poll.
-
I still like this idea and think we should vote on it in a poll.
Should I start registering with multiple user names now? Bone may only have one admin vote, but I could have about 25 member votes against having a shed antler contest by the end of the day. :chuckle:
-
No why not do it fair and have a real vote to see how many people want a contesr and how many don't. I see no problem with that and I think that is the fairest way to do it.
-
rule #1 no 509 ers :chuckle:
coasties....lol just like you need more points per coyote on the coast too :chuckle: :chuckle: you guys should be able to add like an extra 15 inches on your sheds if their from the wetside yeh?
