Title: Cleman Mountain Sheep Tag
Post by: 280ackley on July 14, 2008, 08:33:43 PM
My dad had a great year this year in the draw.  He drew the Cleaman Mountain tag in November.  Does anyone know who makes the best maps for the area?  He is probably going to try to get one with his bow.  How does the land lend its self to spot and stalk?  Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

I know someone who took one with a bow there in the early hunt. I heard they are concentrated more in November. Your best bet is to hope the other tag holders fill out quick which happened to him. I'll see what I can do for maps. They weren't hard to find until they get bumped. It's very conducive to bow hunting.

That units right by my house, my two cousins drew the early tag about  4 years ago and both killed good rams, it was a great hunt. I think if you could catch them in a coulee you could use a bow but think it would be pretty tough.  They go along way when they get bumped. November i think is the rut hunt so it might be a littler easier to catch one with something else on his mind.

Congratulations to your dad.  My hunting partner had the early tag last year. There are ALOT of rams in that unit.  Every one was tagged out by the 2nd day.  I think that is very typical for that unit.  My suggestion to him is to take his time and enjoy it.  He will likely have the unit to himself in short order. The area biologist is very helpful.  If you have not contacted him yet, do so.  As far as maps of the area, mytopo.com is outstanding.  If your dad wants some more information I would be happy to talk to either of you.

If you do a search in here for sheep there was a guy a month or so back who's dad shot one on Cleman.

The year we hunted them we came in from the top but who knows what the weather will be doing that time of year.  They may be concentrated near the feeding station then depending on weather.

blactail135 drew that late tag 2 years ago there is no dought in my mind you could get one with a bow, we would glass from the feed station parking lot and even though they were not feeding the sheep at that time, i think the yews  and young rams would come in to check. the second best ram we seen would come down and check the yews that hung out there every moring and then just head right back up the hill and were plenty of spots to ambush one. the sheep that lived up on the hill were a little more spooked than i thought they would be, but he was also the last one to pull the trigger that year on cleamans. You will have a great hunt lots of rut activity during that late season hunt. sounds like you will have to come in from the wenas side. some folks are saying the mud lake side gate is closed or was closed??? i'm not sure

Hey, you guys could always go over and camp with smelly ol' Don at the Wenas creek campground. Surely you remember him from when we camped a few years ago while deer hunting.(?)

Mud Lake road IS closed private property. You will have to come in from Wenas side or 1701 above the Nile area.

Chinook pass side you can take Bald Mt. rd. up to the top of cleman.  Or a safe bet for those lower rams could be a trek up Water Works Canyon.  Just past the the 12/410 Y.  PM for info.

There is also a road up Garret Canyon which is to the north about 1 mile west of the Wood Shed/Nile Rd on HWY 410. Its kind of bumpy but would take you right into Sanford Pasture above Mud Lake.

I hear that the sheep meat is the best of all the wild game. Best of luck to you !  :hello:
I feel lucky now and hope to draw that next year :chuckle: :chuckle:
Can we see a picture of the one taken by the archer?
We see the sheep whenever we fish the yakima canyon .

I had that tag in 1999 and Bow killed a 161 Ram.  I saw a ram that I guessed would go 172-174.  I wish I would have Rifle shot him he was Awsome.  I was in Archery range of Rams every day.  But I could hustle up and down that Mountainside like a sheep.  I was in phenominal shape that year.  Whats the pops conditioning like??  I never saw another hunter or another person.  It is an awsome hunting oppurtunity.

  Good Luck
