it sounds like a bunch of people and dogs, can't be that small of an area?

Post by: Heredoggydoggy on December 12, 2011, 09:20:25 PM: Washington Predator Hunters Assoc. is trying to arrange one in Moses Lake area in February. Plans aren't cast in stone yet. Lots of public land in that area.

I read the rules last year but I remember it stating that you could hunt out of like 7 different counties that surrounded warden like Adams and Grant counties but you have to bring them to warden in the end for them to count. I'll try and find the old posts about the tournement and try and find last years rules.

I'm game! I'd be willing to do some of the leg work to get it going! Maybe next year I persona;;y think it's to late for this year :dunno: If anyone has been personally involved with one of these or similar tournaments feel free to post up some particulars :)

Post by: Special T on December 13, 2011, 12:52:39 PM: I shot at the Warden tournament... In order to get the permit it hase to be with a Nonprofit group. The area included under the permitt is pretty large. I think its a pretty good time. If you want to only compete with people who call, then one of the derbys up in the Wenatche area or some other timbered/rugged country might be your taste. They normaly have a 50-50 shooting contest, a good feed and raffle. Usually there is a gun and other gear. Normally held in a hanger at the airport. :twocents:

Post by: Doug6XC on December 14, 2011, 06:54:06 PM: I did the Warden Coyote Tournament twice. The first time was about four years ago then again two years ago. The first time I did it the pay out was $600 for the most dogs collected by a two man team and then $250 for the biggest male and female. Unfortunately the weather sucked during the 24 hour contest period so my buddy and I only got a couple. The majority of the other 70-80 teams brought it 2-4 dogs average. I believe the second place team killed 7. The first place team brought in 21 coyotes. That smelled fishy to my hunting buddy and I so we didn't compete for a couple of years. The folks who ran the contest finally changed the money pots to be $500.00 dollars for the largest dogs and the smaller amount for the most dogs. So we tried it again and had a good time. They have some pretty cool fun shoots, some excellent door prizes and normally a BBQ at the end. The two we did started 1800hrs Friday night and ended 24 hours later. Lots of fun if the weather cooperates.

Post by: furbearer365 on December 16, 2011, 05:12:01 PM: if it was me i would enter the gem state tourney in Boise idaho and hunt in eastern washington. You will find that the bigger events are a little more legit and more likely to have a fair chance at competing. I have done tourneys before on a smaller level and got hosed by locals doing whatever they could to win, and without the resources to uphold the rules, you really have no chance against a local crowd.

If someone can figure out how to run a "contest" fair and square, then go for it.
anytime there is money or prizes involved someone will bend the rules, guaranteed. Never went to Vegas expecting the odds to be "fair".

I would rather walk away knowing how i stand in the game of calling in coyotes than have a full wallet but to each there own. I just know that when in a "calling" tourney and you loose to a couple of drunks driving around on snowmobiles with shotguns with the plugs out, it gives you a bad taste in your mouth. If that is how you want to kill coyotes then go for it, it is not illegal, leave a tourney for those that want to compete fairly. I know, blah blah blah, you won so who cares, this post was for nothing. :bash:

I hike my butt off coyote hunting and love every step of it. Having those dogs run in to the call is like no other experience out there.

We are talking about a coyote calling contest, not a gamble. There are things in life that have an unspoken ethic that is asked of you and i believe hunting is one of those. The fact that you go into an event, where an ethic is ask of you, with the attitude that unfairness is going to happen so I should do it too is mind blowing. Good luck to you and hope you find plenty of stuff to spend your unethical money on. :tup:

I suppose you know what you are talking about!! Maybe someone will let me know if and when they have a Coyote Calling Derby again.

and not to worry about ethics, if any WDFW rules are broken or anyone is cited you are disqualified and forfeit your entry fees.

I only was pointing out how the derby in question was won,I should have known that the guy who said he wanted the dogs to skin was up to something, then the story gets out and you have to chuckle about not being sharp enough to have seen that coming. I did not even know there was a derby at the time, or would have smelled something "fishy".
I never have participated in a derby , for the reasons stated, I dislike all derby's. won't even particpate in the online derby on this site.
The derby in Warden was at one time a good thing, everyone had fun, Well not everyone, spotlights and snow machines all hours of the night, trespassing complaints, firearm violation calls,possible D.U.I.'s.
You get the point.
