Title: DBHAWTHORNE's Post Season Scouting Photos - New Monster Non-Typical Whitetail!!!
Post by: DBHAWTHORNE on December 13, 2011, 11:18:18 PM
Right now is the best time to scout for next late season! I started a week ago. Here is the result of those efforts. I don't know what to say. I am speechless. I am also adding a photo of another buck that should be a real bruiser next season. Hopefully these guys make it through the winter and we can see what they become next year.

Some outstanding animals! I think that last buck given a couple years could really turn into a masher

It becomes difficult to distinguish age beyond 4.5 years to all but the most trained eye. However, the non-typical is 4.5 at a minimum and I would guess older. He doesn't have that well conditioned race horse look that a 3.5 year old usually has and though you can't see it as well in his photos his legs appear shorter than a 3.5 or less and not out of proportion for his body. At this point his antlers are probably close to as large as they will ever be. Best case scenario it is reasonable to expect 15-20 inches difference between this year and next year. That being said he could be much smaller or much larger depending on how this 7-8 months treat him.

He has that box frame to him that I love and he is a young deer my guess is a 3 year old buck. Looking at his face and body structure I don't think he could be older then that. He is just going to get wider/taller and pack on some mass and throw in a few extra points for good measure :chuckle: Its always fun to dream!

One of these days I will have to post a picture or 2 of a set of shed I have from a buck I called legend! I watched him winter almost every year in the same canyon on our place. Dam shed hunting tresspassers beat me to his sheds most years. I did find one side when he was 6 and then the matching set when he was 7! then never saw him again after that winter. Always showed up from the mountains late after everyone else. I love to watch deer grow! Its one of the coolest things when you have history with a animal. I was always happy to see him and never had any desire to shoot him even though he was a monster. He was just a majestic buck that I loved having around!

I like that second pic.. looks like fur hanging off his sticker ;)  I sure hope you get him on cam this summer..really interested in seeing him next year..I think he gets bigger..I dont think hes reached his max potential as some said hes 5 1/2..my guess to..he doesnt have that long face yet.

Ill disagree on the second buck...he'll never grow a g4 on the one side and I have watched to many bucks like this over the years..Id be surprised if he grew 10" in his lieftime

Yeah. My best guess is also 5 1/2 but I honestly don't know. With 6 1/2 usually being their best year for antler growth I am hope he is 5 1/2  :chuckle:.  By 4 /12 most bucks have reached 90% of their potential (assuming nutrition is good and consistent). That being said I have seen a few bucks put on a lot more than that between 4 1/2 and 6 1/2.

I agree he will likely not add the g4 but I do believe he will put on over 10 inches in his lifetime. I think he will add a minimum of 10 inches between this year and next year alone.

I think the big one will gross between 187-192 and the other one is somewhere around 140 give or take a few. If the 4x5 adds 10-20 inches he will be very nice next year.

I think this thread should be reported to the mods andeerd taken down. That deer is obscene and will make me have unreal expectations  about what real everyday deer look like. The rack is just not something most if us see in our lives. Sure...there are places to go just to see that kind of rack.....but get our hands on them......not gonna happen. Ah but a man can dream. Impressive.

It is kind of funny to see someone else has pictures of the same deer. I often wondered if I would recognize any I see on here. I have a lot of history with that buck. Last year I got pics of him on two different cameras that were six miles apart! Third year in a row getting pictures of him. Anyone want to see how he has progressed?

I would love to see how he has progressed.

I post the pics on here for two reasons. 1. I know everyone likes to see them (because I do) and hope it will encourage people to post their pics of big whitetail.  & 2. To see how many other people have the bucks I am getting on cam. It is very rare that someone else isn't hunting one of these bucks. I think deadeye is the only buck that I am about 99% sure nobody else knows of his whereabouts.

Hornhoarder,

Thanks for posting. It is awesome to see their progression from year to year.

Today I saw a winter kill 4x5 that was unbelievable!! His one G-4 was tiny but his main 4x4 frame was amongst the biggest I have ever seen in person. One side was especially strong and I estimate his right G-2 at over 15 inches. He had it all width, mass, and length... simply an unbelievable animal.

They don't "only" show up at night but without a doubt they primarily show up at night. If they didn't then there is no way they would get as big as they do. I have daylight photos of every buck I have posted on here except for this one ( which I just found so give me some time next year and if he is still alive I will get some daylight photos of him too). I do have daylight photos on this website of the biggest buck I have ever had on camera (200+ inches gross) and he was taken by another hunter this year. That same buck actually showed up at one of my cameras during daylight during the muzzleloader, modern firearm and late archery seasons so any user group could have taken him. Unfortunately I was hunting 300 yards to the south when he showed up on my camera during the late archery.

I would love to see another hunter or I kneeling next to one of these once of a lifetime trophies grinning ear to ear too.....but knowing they are out there and having the opportunity to hunt them is the best part for me.

The last two week of late archery season is a great time to catchy daylight activity of mature bucks..... it is one time you know where they will be for sure....on the prime food sources.

Thank you, to all you guys who post these awesome pictures of amazing bucks! You guys absolutley put in the time, money, and energy to bring the rest of us into your activities. These pictures are truly special to show my kids, the only drawback is that, my daughter thinks that these are the kind of deer that is around every hill  :chuckle:. She hunted her first big game this fall and while she did have opertunities she did not have a shot she was comfortable taking, thus opted to pass . Now she is more excited for next year. Thanks again guys.

Thanks Birdguy. I know people love to see them and thats one of the reason I like to post them. It is really awesome to know your daughter enjoys looking at them. I loved looking at big bucks like this when I was a kid and I have never outgrown that interest. I would read all the magazines and just dream about hunting these big guys. Like you said these bucks aren't around every tree but they do exist in decent numbers here in WA and the chance for her to get one is very real. She is very fortunate to live in WA because the quality of our whitetail hunting is exceptional compared to most states in the nation. I wish you both the best of luck in your future seasons.

Im heading out Monday to do a little post season scouting myself.  Picked up another cam (not the one I wanted, but better than nothing) and moving the cam that is up there.  On google earth as we speak and think I have the areas the cams are going pin pointed.  Hopefully I can get a picture of the big guy I saw before the horns drop.

Negative. It's not that buck. I am counting the eye guards on the one I am talking about...and it was about 70 miles away from there.

Have you been hunting this buck for a couple years?
