I'm adding a portion to the top of this because so many people ask me about classes. Most of our classes are scheduled when we get enough students signed up to warrant a class. George Brady (509)923-2326 is our Trapper Education Coordinator and if you wish to take a class it is very important to call him and register. The sooner you register the sooner we will have a class.
So why you ask don't you just schedule a class and post it?
We do have two classes we hold for sure every year. One is at our Summer Rendezvous which will be in Eastern WA usually at Cashmere. Look at the Events page on http://watrappers.com/ (http://watrappers.com/) for info about our Rendezvous. The other is held in the fall in Western WA usually in the Olympia area. The scheduling of that is firmed up in early fall. We do hold other classes in other areas and at different times as student registration warrants it.
So why do we do it that way?
We will hold a class for one student if needed but we prefer to get a few students together at one time. We have held classes when only one person showed and we try to avoid that. It's a lot of work and expense to make arrangements for a big class and then only one person show.

Before you can get a trappers license you must complete and pass the trapper education test.
Trapper Education Classes
All first-time Washington trappers, regardless of age, are required to successfully complete Trapper Education training or successfully challenge the written examination process. The Washington State Trapper's Association sponsors one course each year at our Summer Rendezvous.
Other classes are scheduled as interest dictates. Please contact George Brady at (509)322-6844 to register for the next class.
Trappers Education Home Study Option
We think students will get more out of a class but the home study option is available. You can get a manual by contacting George Brady at (509)923-2326. The cost is $15. You may contact one of our Course Instructors that are nearest you to make arrangements to challenge the written examination process. George can direct you to the nearest instructor to take the test.
Washington State Trappers Association is offering a half price membership for anyone taking the Trapper Training class.

Once you have your Trapper Education Certificate you should wait a couple weeks if possible to allow the WDFW to get your name in the system. You can then get your license at any License dealer in the state. If you go to the WDFW Olympia office for your license you can get it there but they will charge you an additional $180 so don't make that mistake.
You will learn this in the class but in WA we can only use cage traps, box traps, suitcase type beaver traps and rat traps with some exceptions for Nuisance wildlfe control. They call it an application fee. Apparently they figured what it cost to make out a license at their office and this is what they came up with. Only in the government could it cost $180 to sell you a credit card type license. LOL
Anyway they want you to go to the dealers and this is the incentive.

Holy crap! I thought it was crazy at $180, but $216 just to keep you from purchasing virtually a receipt from their 'customer service' folks. That's crazy.

So to challenge the test,is it based on the rules or the whole trappers ed pdf on the WDFW web site? it is pretty lengthly.iv'e browsed through it and alot seems rudundant. I have trapped for many years in Wisconsin,and i know i need to take the test here. i relize i will probably have to wait till june,but just looking for a little heads up.
Mostly the rules. I would advise to call George up and have him send you the manual though. The version on the WDFW site is outdated.

I'm going to send my kid to the trapper ed class. Do they teach anything about leg holds, or just the current trapping methods?
We do try to touch on all traps that are legal even those ones you have to obtain a special permit to use so yes.

Karen gives a very good class and is well worth spending a couple hours on the road to get there. No doubt in my mind you will learn enough to save you many times the few hours in traveling when you start trapping.

With a trapper's license, can I trap coyotes and if so can I use snares?No snares are allowed for trapping in washington from my understanding, sure you can catch coyotes in cage traps. Goodluck getting one ever to go in one. They were saying it virtually never happens. :dunno:

There is a permit process for non-strangling foot snares but I don't know anyone useing them except for bear damage complaints. Historically that is the only use for them.

Just build chicken coops...coyotes have no problem going in there. It is actually tough to keep them out!I know that this is a dumb question but.... There is a lot more to the manual we use in class then the on-line version from WDFW. I recommend it.

I don't think there is such a license. Perhaps you are thinking of a fur dealer license. That is a commercial license that allows you to buy or receive fur for resale. Fur buyers are the ones who get that. Only other license related to fur is a Trapping License. If you want to hunt bobcats, raccoons and coyotes you can get a Small Game License and those are dual classification animals, furbearer/small game. No furbearer license though.

You should both try to come to the Trapper Education Class on Dec. 5 at Cabela's in Lacey. There is no minimum age for getting a trapping license, but the person should be old enough to understand the material. Also, there is a new, shorter test now.
Boy I'd love to attend the class with my kids, but it would require me to travel to olympia and that is something that I just won't do. You are aware that liberalism is contagious? Maybe there will be a class sometime in Yakima, maybe @ the Cabela's store? So far I've talked a nephew and all 3 of my kids to take the test. Pretty sure I can get a couple other nephews and my brother to commit as well.

Hello I'm very interested in getting my trappers liscence, have trapped a lot in Montana and understand all the rules and what not for Washington, but need to figure out who to talk to about getting set up, I'm located in skagit county, any info would be great, thanks!
Of course you will need to pass the Trapper Education course first. The Manual is being rewritten. It is basically done now and should be on-line in just a few days. If you are not in a hurry I would wait a bit until you can download the manual and give it a read. Then you will have to call and schedule an appointment to take the test at a WDFW Regional office. No classes held soon or I would steer you that way.

Sorry, missed this. Just studied the online guide. Went thru it a couple times. Missed a couple I shouldn't have, but still got better than 90%. Will spend more time on regs and hide care before I start trapping.

I just received a message from WDFW that they are suspending all Trapper Education classes for at least the next 30 days because of COVID-19. Not sure what the near future holds but we are planning on the class in August and Karen has been making plans for the classes late in the year. I know of no other classes that were or are scheduled at this time.
