Need some help here.
What's the best way to use coon stripe shrimp for steelhead drift fishing? Hook them through the back & out the head? Run the tail through the egg loop to straighten them out or leave them in the U shape? Break them in half & use the tail & head seperately?
What about running them on a bait & diver? Is that a good idea & again how do you hook them?

May want to cure the tails a bit...that'll toughen them up and you can add a little color to mix it up.
-
Salt & sugar with a bit of dye and than take the shrimp and put the top hook through the bend in the tail so the eyes hang straight down make sure when you put the shrimp on you get the hook through the meat and shell in the tail. The heads tend to fall off after a few drifts but that is alright as long as you still have the tail meat on there its still good to go!
Good Luck B_C

Thank you both, I'll try that.

I haven't used them but I would think you should pop the head off with all of its defensive pointy spears on it. :dunno:
-
Throw 3 or 4 in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds. It toughens them up a bit. Otherwise I have used several of the commercial egg cures to cure up shrimp that I wanted to die. Either way they make a great bait.

I use them a lot! The best way is to cure them up and then straighten them out on the hook. Just hooking them and leaving them in the u shape will produce a lot less result. When i got back into steelhead fishing 2 years ago after a few years off. I really saw the differece when I started to straighten them out!

Carpsniperg2 are you back trolling the shrimp or drifting them?

put the front hook through the head shortn up the trailor and put the tail through the egg loop, it will also help keep it upright and lookn more natural

A little cocktail sause and some lemon. Taste great when the fish aren't biting. :chuckle:
-
Go buy a 50 lb. box.
Cure half for fishing, then cook the rest and eat them while fishing...
Oh, and thread them on the hook tail first, and definitely straighten them out as much as possible.

Drifting and bobber fishing them. Also plunking with them as well.

When I'm using shrimp I always fish head down. Seems to works the best for me...But then again I would rather just use roe :twocents:
-
I always hook them through the skinny part of the tail first and then twist and hook through the meatier part of the tail so the head is down but at an angle. Drift fishing them this way can cause your line to twist though. Drift fishing for the most part i either use eggs or sand shrimp

Next time you are out take a picture and post it.

There's no secret ways to rig them, I just got some to use this year. I used them once years ago and we knocked this piss outta them. I've always caught fish on eggs and yarn so I never had a reason to start using them. But its fun to try out new stuff so I bought a bunch this year. Who knows maybe I'll even try a steelhead jig one of these days :chuckle:

we fished the cow yesterday and the little secret way to fish with them sucked, lol.. It was actually really slow yesterday & I have never seen so many boats in my life.. I didnt see to many nets out, I think it could have just been a slow day?.. at least it was for us..
