Talked to a houndsmen yesterday who was in the Priest Lake area day before Christmas looking for lion tracks and found a fresh set of bear tracks. Very little snow so far. He said the dogs blew up and wanted to run it, but luckily he didn't have any loose hounds when he found the tracks.

no reason to go to sleep this year

Yeah I was out last weekend and was sweating my but off it was so warm down here. Still lots of green everywhere. I would imagine a few males are getting up and moving around on days like that.

It might not be that unusual on the westside, but it's pretty unusual in the Panhandle of ID for this time of the year. :)

the illusive santa clause bear.... :chuckle:

How ironic.......yesterday.

back in the day when i had hounds, i would occasionally come across bear tracks on the west side during the winter but they seem to be boars tracks, i think the females over here might hibernate but i dont think the boars do really no reason for it, not like you guys over there in the north east corner, never been over there in the winter but i hear it gets pretty damn cold and butt deep in snow....a bit off thread but do you guys have a real bad deer tick problem over there ?
-
Had a little black bear cross the road in front of me last week here in NW Montana :dunno: :dunno:

speakn of seeing them this time of year, i have a big ole blacky rippn up the woods behind my house, my son whacked one during bear season in the back yard, to bad it is closed cause he has a real nice winter coat right now

When I got here in 1994 I rarely ever got a tick on me or any ticks off my deer or turkeys, I get alot more now on all three.

its funny that you mention that cause in the 80s and 90s i really dont remember to many ticks but i killed a 3pt a couple years back and damn near lost my lunch, his whole brisket was nothing but ticks, i have also noticed that the bear i have killed didnt have any ticks, well atleast not like the deer do, sorry for getn off thread boys

It was 60 degrees in the Wenas yesterday. That plays havoc on them

Was up checking my cams a couple weekends ago and cut fresh Yogi tracks

My Uncle told me once that he has seen bear tracks every month of the year in NW Montana. Not that unusual to see Grizzly tracks there at any time during the winter, they seem to wake up and roam around a bit, more than Blackies anyway. But when my Uncle ran trap lines he would run across black bear tracks and he said he'd seen tracks every month of the year over the years.

I know of a few dens. Everytime we've went to check them out in the winter, they've had fresh bear tracks in and out.

Great information guys, thanks!!
