So yesterday I put in on the river, warmed up the motor while I prepped my gear. Ran about 1.5 miles upriver and was getting set up for my drift and the alarm goes off. It was pissing water good when I shut it down so I assumed the oil was low. Drifted back down to the launch knowing I was going to have to fire it back up for the last few hundred yards to the launch. Hit the key, fired up ran down, no alarm. Sat there holding position in the current to see if I could get it to come back on, and couldn't. Pulled the boat, the oil was fine. Now I don't know what to do. Really want to fish tomorrow but not at the risk of damage to the motor. BTW is an '07 Yamaha FJ60. Any thoughts or experience with this?

Which alarm, low oil or high temp? T-stat may have been stuck and caused a brief high temp until it opened would be my guess.
-
I have had high temp go off on my 85 hp Suzuki and it was peeing fine when I looked best I could figure was seaweed or grass stuck just long enough to cause the alarm and when I stopped it cleared. :twocents:

I believe that the alarm on Yamaha's in general are oil pressure related ,but yes ....tstat could be one . Also lot of OB get their pee pipes clogged up by mud vasps ,debris,etc.... and propellers on water pumps get ruined too often .... Not knowing how long the engine sat before you fired it up ,if you're using it on salt etc.... could hinder answers ....if you can next time be more specific and provide as much information as possible ,that could help lot more too .

Don't know which alarm, this is a tiller and it has an audible alarm but no lights for the temp or oil.
-
This is a jet, last use was mid November on the Skagit, and three prior trips on the Chehalis Oct/Nov., no saltwater use.
-
The manual specifies that the audible alarm is there for both oil and temp. It appears that the tiller models are supposed to have a light to designate specifically what the alarm is for but the knockout for that is still in place so it must not have been installed for whatever reason.

Which should eliminate the impeller. If your oil level was okay I would suspect a stuck t-stat.
-
I would test the oil pressure switch/sending unit. An indicator light sending unit is a simple switch. When the engine is off or the pressure is too low, the switch closes and illuminates the lamp. Under pressure the switch is open and the lamp goes out. With the minimal use I would assume the switch/sender was malfunctioning.

Thanks everyone, I'll start by trying to test the switch and see what happens from there.

if it's anything like my 40 horse, if you have the single warning light it's connected to both the oil level sensor and the thermo sensor. one or the other trips the alarm and it cuts out at 2500RPMs, and makes a godawful racket.
if you're getting the alarm, you can unplug one or the other and it should turn off.

pinch a hose somewhere? Seems like this happened to my dad and it ended up where a hose got shut in the motor cover just right.
