I know that most pellets are for use with 209 primers. Do they have any pellets for #11 caps and what do you all suggest for powder?
-
I dont muzzle load but i know my dad uses pellets with #11 caps. I think he uses pyrodex triple 7.
-
The pellets seem to ignite just fine with #11's. Give them a try, you will probably see fine performance.
-
"when" I muzzleload hunt I use Pyrodex Pellets with #11's...works great. Quicker ignition over powder, IMO. The ones I have are called 50/50. 50 grns in 50 cal.
-
Thanks guys appreciate it.
-
I shoot Pyrodex pellets with musket caps. I tried Triple 7 pellets but got the classic bang-boom. I guess musket caps arent hot enuf for Triple 7? Pyrodex goes boom every time, no hang fires.
-
I like loose powder. I just can't get over the price of pellets in addition to the 50gr increments. Seems like if your gun's sweet spot is at 90gr or 125 gr you can't get it just right with pellets. With the speed loaders available, I don't see any advantage to pellets? :dunno:
Use the #11 german caps if you can find them. I've never had a misfire or hangfire with them yet. They are hot. As mentioned, musket caps are another way to go. In any case, keep that nipple clean and keep an extra one on you at all times (ALONG WITH A NIPPLE WRENCH :chuckle:) in your possibles bag.
-
Loose powder will give you a more consistent burn and you can find the perfect load for your muzzleloader. Always check to see that there is a little loose powder under the nipple. If not, add some and it will always go boom!

Loose powder definitely is less convenient than pellets, but I do use it- good consistent performance, and you can fine-tune the load, just like others are saying. And I do use musket caps- easier to handle than those tiny #11s. Good luck!
-
loose powder for me,I like the whole experience of measuring and so on,and it has never failed me..
-
:yeah: Me too! 85gr Black powder with a 54cal patched round ball use to worked well for me!
-
I use Pyrodex Pellets.... They come in 50 and 30 grains.... I shoot 130 grains and get 1" groups @ 50 yards.....
-
Loose powder for sure. The Chinesse have been using it for thousands of years. Must work? Pellets, maybe 20yrs
-
real muzzeloader guys use loose powder. :chuckle:
-
I had more misfires with pellets then I've ever had with powder !! I'll never go back to pellets.

"Guys who kills stuff with muzzleloaders use pellets." :tung:
I'm all about he pellets. Way too easy to use when hunting.

I use 125gr of triple seven ffg with musket caps :twocents:

loose powder for me. I switched over this past season and really wish I would have changed sooner. I get way more shots before fowling with the loose powder. I believe that the loose powder doesn't suck up the moisture like the pellets.
-
I've been hunting with muzzleloaders for over 25 years and I have never tried pellets. Started out with real black powder, then went to Pyrodex, and now I use Triple 7. Honestly I just don't see what the advantage is to using the pellets. It's not hard or time consuming to weigh out a few charges and fill up the speed loaders.

Powder for me. I played with pellets when I first started shooting a smoke pole. Much better luck with powder over pellets  You can play with loads as well a lot more then with pellets. With pellets you get 100g or 150g :chuckle:

X2
powder trumps pellets for WA ml ignition

You can get 30 grainers in Pyrodex Pellets..... I shoot 130 grains of them..... I couldn't get good groups with any kind of powder from 85 grains to 130 grains..... Got some pellets the next day put in 150 grains.... Bullets would tumble and hit sideways... :chuckle: Backed down to 130 grains of pellets not sure of anything at the moment and I get great groups with a nice trajectory..... I don't shoot much past 100 yards but it helps.... :twocents: Only powder/bullet combo I could get decent groups with....

I started out last year with 777 pellets and they worked well all year long. I probably shot 500 rounds and it was my first year. This year I had nothing but trouble with them and switched to powder. There is definately less delay with loose than pellets and I have had much more consistent shots with loose.

Has anyone tried American Pioneer powder? I used it for a couple years and it really shoots clean! First ones I tried I got from Verles in Shelton and it came in the plastic jar with pre measured plastic tubes of 100gr I think it was. Couldn't find them after that so just used the loose powder and still seems to work nice and shoots really clean. Went back to modern last year so I don't know when I'll go back to the ML stuff again although I do enjoy shooting them. A friend was using pellets in his Renegade and not having too good of luck but still stuck with them. :bash: Now he's wanting to sell the Renegade. We were wondering if maybe the pellets were meant mostly for the inlines rather than the more tradional muzzleloaders. :dunno: Any ideas?

The pellets are designed for 209 primers, they are hotter than #11's or musket caps, switch to loose and see what happen

I tried the pellets and had decent results the first season but when I went to shoot again the next summer they were very inconsistent. Like they have a shelf life or something. I have a bottle and a half of 100gr sticks if anyone want to give it a try.

Encore 280, you are correct. The Renegade needs loose powder not pellets because of the side ignition. If you guys want fast, sure ignition use black powder and keep it dry. You wont be disapointed.
-
will only use loose powder... I tried pellets for 1 year! and had hang fires..and I hear the same all to often in muzzleloader cirlcles about pellets
