Powder or Pellets

I know that most pellets are for use with 209 primers.  Do they have any pellets for #11 caps and what do you all suggest for powder?

I dont muzzle load but i know my dad uses pellets with #11 caps. I think he uses pyrodex triple 7.

The pellets seem to ignite just fine with #11's. Give them a try, you will probably see fine performance.

"when" I muzzleload hunt I use Pyrodex Pellets with #11's...works great. Quicker ignition over powder, IMO. The ones I have are called 50/50. 50 grns in 50 cal.

I shoot Pyrodex pellets with musket caps.  I tried Triple 7 pellets but got the classic bang-boom.  I guess musket caps arent hot enuf for Triple 7?  Pyrodex goes boom every time, no hang fires.

I like loose powder.  I just can't get over the price of pellets in addition to the 50gr increments.  Seems like if your gun's sweet spot is at 90gr or 125 gr you can't get it just right with pellets.  With the speed loaders available, I don't see any advantage to pellets?

Use the #11 german caps if you can find them.  I've never had a misfire or hangfire with them yet.  They are hot.  As mentioned, musket caps are another way to go.  In any case, keep that nipple clean and keep an extra one on you at all times (ALONG WITH A NIPPLE WRENCH  ) in your possibles bag.

Loose powder will give you a more consistent burn and you can find the perfect load for your muzzleloader. Always check to see that there is a little loose powder under the nipple. If not, add some and it will always go boom!

Loose powder definitely is less convenient than pellets, but I do use it- good consistent performance, and you can fine-tune the load, just like others are saying.  And I do use musket caps- easier to handle than those tiny #11s.  Good luck!

  Me too! 85gr Black powder with a 54cal patched round ball use to worked well for me!

I use Pyrodex Pellets.... They come in 50 and 30 grains.... I shoot 130 grains and get 1" groups @ 50 yards.....

Loose powder for sure. The Chinesse have been using it for thousands of years. Must work? Pellets, maybe 20yrs
