Title: Seasons almost over...
Post by: Hornseeker on January 04, 2012, 01:07:03 PM
So, this pup has come a long way this year. In Mid February this is what he looked like... about a month old...he's in there somewheres....
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv351%2Fhornseeker%2F2011%2FPileofPup.jpg&hash=8fdd1c9132cb30c0c845cbfedba60ef31ce8d429)

Beginning of March, he came to our house...and took to it like a fish to water.

Took to fetchin right away...

And this summer he loved to play in the sprinklers!
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv351%2Fhornseeker%2F2011%2FGDSprinklerrs.jpg&hash=620ff2d4680f4e1e44355fb675a14c928e7254aa)

Fall finally came and I got him and his big sister out for their first days of real hunting! 8 Months old!
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv351%2Fhornseeker%2F2011%2FCGD1sthunt2RS.jpg&hash=867bc89da4a410a2f3b799ce0344dd4de3357984)

We didn't get anything there... but not long after he and I got it done. At this time, he didn't really know what was going on, but thought the big dead bird was pretty cool nonetheless... 9 Months Old

Then I took him for a duck hunt... it was a slow day, but he pulled a couple Golden Eyes outta the drink for me... 10 Months Old!
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv351%2Fhornseeker%2F2011%2FGDucksrs.jpg&hash=9cf6ae526eceee4e0d669954b43f6e68dfb3c68e)

He doesn't look super happy to have been swimming at 15 degrees!!
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv351%2Fhornseeker%2F2011%2FGColdrs.jpg&hash=13c50fd52e588c44eb434fc885485158158be4ea)

Then we got another ditch parrot...11 months old!
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv351%2Fhornseeker%2F2011%2FGPheasantrs.jpg&hash=989b666f3198dfad97261c919555afb959e1e7a0)

We got a couple huns and one other pheasant...and lost 2 roosters... but all in all, I couldn't be happier with this dog. He is proving to be a great family dog and a very eager hunting dog. I cant WAIT for next season! I may take him goose hunting this weekend, but then again, I may not...as keeping him still and camo'd will be a pain in the butt and I dont need him to retrieve!

Horn hunting with the big sister over Christmas!

Cant imagine not having a dog to pal around with out there....

Looks like a good pup.  I too have a new dog, she is young now and only made it out 4 times thus far.  I will get her out two more times before the close date.   Can't wait for next year though.

Happy hunting

Ernie
Looks like he turned out great. Got bigger than I thought he would from his puppy pics. Nice

Got him trained on horns as well?

Looks like you got 2 nice looking hunting parnters ;) I had my daughter out last weekend. She loved it, now wants to go to the hunter safety course. She is 11, carried the daisy red-rider.

Cool Mike..I got my 10 year old the red ryder for Christmas... the 12 yr old got an 870 20 ga. though!!!

JCol, No professional involved. He's from a ranch. The ranch owner won the dad at a pheasants forever banquet, then bought a female from a neighbooring rancher... then had these guys! hunerd dollar pup... if he continues like he is, he will be well worth it!!

Yeah, he is working horns a bit. I think over the winter I'll work him on them pretty hard...I have high hopes.

There are several good options out there Doug, but this is probably the nicest, most affordable gun. Mossberg and Winchester make sorta a bigger, clunkier, uglier youth model. Browning makes a Dandy one, but its WAY more expensive too. I dont think a kid can go wrong with the 870 youth for 250-300 dollars.

Great looking dog!  I cannot imagine having one around either.  My doofus lab and I are going to go chase the chukars around a little more this winter.

for another bill you can get an autoloader Rem 1100 20LT. Sweet gun, but I like the simplicity of the 870

Just to add:: If I had it to do over I would have gone with the 870. Not sure I like the automatic second/third shot. My son almost always touches of 2. lol. Usually neither are on target, but that is another story. He can beat me on the trap range.  >:(

IT took some coaxing and some acclimation, but today I got him retrieving the dummy in the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone... it has ice floating down it and he had to break thin bank ice to get to the water. It was sweet!
