Went out today in the potholes area near Othello. We had gone last week and had alot of action with a small 6 decoy spread on top of the ice. We had it all planned out but when we got out there we started to hike but by the time we hiked to the lake we were not were we wanted to be. Alot of time was wasted to get to where we wanted to be. Me and my brother get out on the canoe and set our decoys out (24 mallards and 12 teal). We were hurrying and just broke the thin layer of ice around our decoys. When we got all ready and set up to shoot there wasn't alot of action at first. As soon as we started seeing them and calling them they would look like they were going to land but they seemed to always fly away. We assumed it was that they noticed the ide and didn't want to land in it. We eventually moved to some open water and set our decoys up again and I got one duck. Not 100% sure but I think its a scaup?

From what I can tell it's a lesser scaup
-
Looks like a greater scaup judging by the size, unless you have tiny hands
-
Scaup. Greater will have an iridescent green tint to the head, Lesser will have an iridescent purple tint to the head.
-
Definitely a blue bill!

This scaup was really small and didn't have alot of breast meat on it and my hands are quite big by the way. Going by ducksdogsdownriggers suggestion, It did have a iridescent green tint to the head so I'm gessing it is a Greater.
-
I stand corrected. I was trying to judge by the extent of white on the edge of the wing. Congrats on the bird!!
-
Based on the white on the wings I'd say it's a Lesser Scaup also. On a Greater the white goes almost all the way out the wing.
-
Can there by some kind of mix of the two?
-
Still a fine bird

Looks like he's smiling in the top ipc :)
