Title: Good group?
Post by: jackelope on January 08, 2012, 04:38:34 PM
After tinkering around with powder and bullets for just a couple combinations, I was able to pretty consistently shoot a 3 shot group like this. 100 yards, sitting on the ground shooting off of shooting sticks. I imagine the groups might shrink up a little off of a solid rest on a bench. 295 grain copper jacketed aero-tipped(I think that's what they're called anyway, I don't have the package anymore) powerbelts, 100 grains of loose 777 through my T/C NW Explorer. It's a 48 twist rifle.

What do you think...keep working on it or call it good....I'm kind of new at this....
I've got some of the 348 grain Hornady Great Plains bullets I might try.

I suggest shooting from a better rest to see how much of the group size is the load.  Of course if that accuracy meets your needs, call it good. :twocents:

I was pretty solid and I've got 4 targets that look roughly like this one give or take a small amount.

I will shoot off of a bench at some point....this was out in the back pasture at my inlaws place a few weeks ago. Had some spare time so I burned some powder...didn't put a lot of time into setup.

2" group at 100 yards is not a bad group for a smoke pole...especially off sticks.  I can get sub 2" with my set up off a rest using a peep site, 110 grains pyrodex and 325 grain shackwave.....but that is off a bench rest.

It looks plenty good to me. That's about as good as I can ever do. With open sights, 100 yards is a long ways (at least for me). I think you're all ready for deer season.

Yeah, with irons on my lever gun (30-30) with rest, pop can accuracy is all that I require. If you can see it with the naked eye and hit it out to 150yds, you've got a good thing going. I guess I'd try to duplicate that with a smoke pole.

I would hunt with that group, no problem. I do want to scope my muzzy just to see how accurate the gun really is. 100 yds, open sights is tough to keep the front sight in the center of the black. whole sight covers it up. I run a big + on the target with black tape. at least I can see above and to the side of the sight where the lines should intersect. brings my groups in to about 1.25". good as I need

If you're happy with your zero, and just want a better sight picture for group, go to a 6:00 hold.  That way you can see your aiming point to gauge windage and elevation a little better.  You're just going to hit the bottom of the bull instead of the center, but you'll have a much better chance of getting a good group.

those are some good looking groups. They are all kill shots.  Open sights at a hundred yards I will take a group like that any day.  That is around the same groups I shoot with mine. A solid rest I can definetly do a little better.

Looks like "minute of meat" to me! Just keep shooting to get more and more comfortable with the gun and from different positions.
