Title: Question on why do people buy a new bow every year?
Post by: huntnnw on January 09, 2012, 09:47:45 PM
I have bow hunted for 20 years and I see these people who almost every year buy a new bow, I dont get it. I guess if you have more money than you know what to do with. I personally buy a bow and like to keep it for awhile, get use to it and be super comfortable, much like a rifle and I never hear about guys buying a rifle every year to hunt. A bow u bought 3 years ago is hardly any different than todays..granted if you own a bow from the 90's yes there are some added benefits and weight and speed. I can think of 100 other items I could purchase every hunting season with $800 price tag on the high end bows.. Just curious to those who do this

Don't do it every year, but try to about every 3 years.  Other than the fact that Bowhunting is my passion, I couldn't give you a good reason.  I am selling a DXT this year that I paid $1400 two years ago fully loaded.  I will be lucky to get $750 out of it with arrows this year.  I thinkk to myself every time I do this.....what the hell am I doing????  But I just can't stop myself.  Everyone has to have their poison and I guess bowhunting is mine.

But for those looking Bowtechs new bow will be revealed in about 8hrs

I do those things too....but I Don't drink, smoke, eat out at restaraunts often, travel (vacations), etc......I spend a fairly large amount of money on hunting each year.  I really don't do anything else.  And I already have most of the stuff you mention so don't need to spend on that stuff anymore.

I buy a bunch of bows every year. Most of them I find good deals on and turn around and flip them.  I think I have 13 right now. As far as a brand new bow every year, I don't even come close to that. Most the time My hunting bows stay my number 1 bow for around 3 years. If I found a better shooting bow each year out of all the bows I shoot. I would buy one every year. They have to feel better and shoot better then what I already have. I still have not found anything better for me then my x force.

Always think about trading up, but as with my favorite shotgun I probably won't.  Have been shooting the same Darton since 1995 and it has killed an elk, deer or hog just about every year since.   Kinda like my woman, just gets better with age.

I have had quite a few bows. I was buying a new bow every year for a few years until 2009. I liked most of the bows I have had and bows I have shot I ended up back with my 2006 Bowtech Allegiance. I like how it shoots and the way it feels in my hand. Might end up keeping it for a few more years.  :chuckle:

I bought a new bow every 2 or 3 years just because I had to have the latest, coolest thing on the market and I had $$$ burning holes in my pockets., Then I got married and started having kids. I've had my current bow for 3 years and will probably keep it for another 3 to 5.

I bought a new bow this year and hope to get many, many years out of it.  I used my cheapo Parker for 8 years before I finally upgraded.  As long it kills deer its doing its job.  Even if I had the money I couldn't see buying one every year.

me neither.. I could buy one every year. I love my dream season and dont see the need to do that.  I see lotta guys in the archery shops who pretend to hunt and buy every gadget on the market and I guess it makes them feel like a hunter  :chuckle:

I agree with you there shane. I can take one look at a persons bow and know what kind of bow hunter they are :chuckle: A lot of guys are into self image and think they have to have the best most expensive stuff out there to be able to look like a great hunter and shooter.

I knew a guy that would buy a new one probably every other year.  Always something new and cutting edge that was going to give him slightly more advantage than the last bow---quieter, more let-off, designed for carbon, lighter, 5 fps faster, etc.  Seemed like every year he was trying to sell me a year old bow.  But it wasn't limited to bows either, he always had to have the newest design in clothing and camo patterns, latest calls/scents, even truck/boat.

If no one bought new gadgets, who would give you reviews on new products. You sound like no one hunts unless they have a old bow... :dunno:

I have the old SQ2, it is outdated! But i hunt hard with it, and it has served me well.

not at all...I just do not understand the mindset of people who continue to buy a new bow year after year to me. Maybe I am missing something :dunno:..gives people the feeling I am cool cause I have the newest crap?? only thing I have come to the conclusion of, beacuse you cannot tell me somebodys 5 yr old Mathews, pse etc is any less of a bow than todays bow and any less of a hunting weapon today. My bow is 4 yrs old and I dont plan on buying a new one anytime soon..no reason to

Get a kick out of reading this thread. I guess I am one of your gear queers huntnw. I have got a new hoyt every year for the last 5. Why?  I guess because I can, and i am a staff shooter for a club representing hoyt . I also get a pretty good discount, and my friends and bro.in laws get great two year old bows.  Plus it gives me a great back up. I see nothing wrong with having a new one every year if you can afford it. I usually only catch crap for my new bows from people that wish they could get one every year too. :tung:
I would like carpsniperg2 to take a look at my bows and tell me what kind of a hunter I am. Sounds like he is a fortune teller....I wonder if he reads palms too?  :dunno:
Anyway my kills and pics speak for themselves. :twocents:

I tend to go 12-15 years between new bows.   Nothing fancy just functional.  My friends that have to have the latest and greatest hate it when I wreck their arrows with my old crappy High Country.  Got a new Limbsaver bow this year only because I won it.  wasn't really in the market for one and my old H/C still shoots like a champ.  It has turned out to be a great bow and shoots very nicely. Once again, nothing fancy.   Just remember folks, most of the time it ain't the bow but the dude (or dudette) behind it.

Great thread.  I've owned 2 bows in my 12 yrs of bowhunting.  Updated because my brother bought me a new one.  One of my favorite reasons to keep the old is the history of the bow.  "Remember that shot at..... Or how I gacked that shot on.......?"  I love the history represented by the dings, scratches and use signs of my bow.  Same with guns.  My shotgun is a Browning my dad bought me when I was 15.  Love it.

I am going to Africa, want to shoot a bush buck in April.  We have some friends who are land owners.  The son is a big bow hunter.  I am thinking of leaving my bow there as a tip.  Not sure if I would be excited or not about getting and setting up a new bow.....

I liked to collect old bows (when I had $$) and will hunt with my 40+ Y/O recurve until I find another that suits me, just like the looks and feel of wood.
One time while walking back to camp past a group of "gear queers" (looked like a Cabala's Display) sitting around watching the game, playing poker (on a Sunday afternoon) they all laughed at me, from my ripped Camo, tennis shoes, and old recurve. Asked me why I did not by some new gear...
I informed them I had a deer hanging, and was on my way to get help to pack my elk, advised them to spend less money, and more time hunting  :IBCOOL:

Agree 100%. I bought a new bow every year for my first 3 years. It takes me a few years to get really comfortable with my bow or any piece of my hunting equipment. I've learned to really do my research now and buy what I really need/want the first time and not keep "upgrading" every year. New stuff looks nice, but proven stuff performs @ crunch time.

I buy a new bow probably every three years, usually I see a new bow in a magazine and really like the add, or my current bow is due for a whole new string and cable set, and I figure I'm about to layout some coin anyway, so I put new strings and cables on it and use it as a backup to whatever I buy new.  I don't really research the new bows, I try and buy simply whatever is most popular and I think makes me look the coolest and the most like Lee Lakosky or maybe like Randy Ulmer.  I usually don't shoot it first, cuz I'm a gear queer  and it really doesn't matter to me if it fits me and I just buy the newest Bowhunter magazine and usually outfit my bow with whatever equipment has the nicest shiniest adds in it.  usually I only practice with broadheads for one or two shots and if they are close I will just use Kentucky windage when shooting at animals.  My old bow is really practically brand new without a scratch on it as I keep it strapped in a hardcase on the front of my four wheeler, and it's getting harder and harder to get within 70 yards of a deer on a four wheeler and have enough time to get it out of the case and get a shot.  But when I do my super T-rex shiny whizbang broadheads screwed to the front of my gorilla tuff camo arrows leave a swath of blood that no man less skilled than Chuck Adams could follow.

My Blacktail recurve and longbow have served me for 20 years.

My Blacktail isn't quite that old but it's going on 5 years.

I shot a '92 PSE up to 2010 and then bought a used '08 Bowtech
It will probably be the last compund I will ever buy

Only reason I bought another is so I'd have a trad back up AND its a fricken piece of art, work of art and piece of art and in my case NOT state of the art, though it is in its own world. :)    If I wasn't broke and he wasn't in saw dust up to his ears, I'd have him make me another.   So many woods to be made into dust.

For a few years I was buying at least one.brand new bow a year. But I was into target archery a ton and was getting very good deals on the bows. Usually I could sell them when I was done.for.what I paid or.slightly more. Now I am not near as involved intarget archery or the pro shop as much. My hunting bow is 2 years old and I plan on keeping it for at least a few more years. I do have a top end target bow that I bought last year that seems to just hang out on the rack more than anything anymore. Hard to see a $1200 bow sitting there not being used. I should really sell it. But not sure.I.want to yet.
Now I am in the camp.that I could do a lot of things with that new bow money each year.

Yes I'm a gear queer  :chuckle:.  This year will be my 5th new bow since 2003.  But I would like to say that I hunt my ass off every year and have been pretty successful.  I don't know many people that have shot as many elk as me all in Washington state.  I've shot 7 since 03 and completely missed a early season in 07.

Now.....Apparaently people that are making comments about "gear queers" believe their way of hunting is the only way.  Let me inform you of something....YOUR EGOSCENTRIC PRICKS that think your way of hunting is the only way.  Well your wrong and a guy that wants to sit in camp with a $2000 dollar bow while wearing another $5000 dollars worth of cloathing, next to his $50,000 dollar truck is just as much a hunter as you.  They may not harvest as many animals...heck maybe they are just the camp cook, but I bet you one thing....they are having fun doing it.  Hunting is not always about the killing of an animal, it is about being at camp away from home, spending quality time with friends and family.  Now, if someone wants to do this with new gear who are you to call them less of a hunter.  Grow up.....this thread has started to piss me off.

Woah, slow down partner  :) I think they were just joking about the gear comment. I doubt anyone is seriously suggesting that new bow fans are less of a hunter. We have enough people getting thin skinned about serious topics than it doesnt help to take a joke too seriously. I hope your day goes better.   :hello:

I'm not trying to say new bows make anybody a better hunter I really like to shoot a lot of targets and get good deals on new bows.  I normal can sell an older bow for about the same cost as I get my new one.

Well, my 1st and only bow I got it used 2 months ago. It's an '02 Jennings Buckmaster 2000. Shot it at the SAB 3D shoot this past weekend and though tit was the chit. I did alright. I don't see me buying a new bow until I kill something with this one. So it'll probably be a few years. I shot the same shotgun for 20 years and have been shooting the same rifle for 25 years.
Guess I'm a creature of habit. If it aint broke, don't fix it.  :twocents:
Besides, 3 kids don't allow for me to get to many "new" things.

I've been bow hunting since I was 15yo (about 33 years ago), and I've had three modern bows.  An old Darton was my first, and she shot GREAT.  When one of the limbs came apart after about six years, I bought the latest and greatest one I could afford (still in college at the time), which was a Golden Eagle.  It only had 20% let off and I shot it at 78lbs for the next 20 years.  Picked up a Hoyt Trykon XL in 2007 and been very happy ever since.  BTW, I donated the Golden Eagle to a friend of a friend that wanted to get into archery hunting.  So, she's still out there too.  Don't need the latest and greatest to be successful.  But, I will say it sure is nice shooting 74lbs w/80% let-off and about 320fps w/my Hoyt Trykon XL.

If you are talking about my post,  :dunno:
I meant no offence, I used the term as a joke, in reference to a previous post.
The guys at that camp even laughed at my response (although did not offer to help pack), and yes they were having fun (drinking and playing cards, watching the game) but in no way are they as much a hunter as me ( an egocentric prick, and Elitist) as I don't drink until its dark, don't hang out in camp during legal hunting hours, and really don't care about any game, except what I am pursuing, I hunt during season, and "camp" during "scouting/fishing season"...
It also was the only year those guys were there, and only for the one weekend.  :dunno:
As I said, I don't care what you use, its how you use it.

This year i got a new to me bow after shooting a PSE Bruin since  03,04? I think I plub wore it our because it got to the point where i couldn't get it to group anymore. Got a Switchback cand couldn't believe how much faster, quieter etc it was. I think getting  a newer bow every 5 yrs is the way to go... get a year old bow from a frined that gets a new one every year. get better theck and not so much expense.
This topic is kinda like, what do you drive? I wish i had the $$$ to get a new bow, and or a truck every few years...Lots of life is a bout priorities, and i wish i could have my cake and eat it too!  :chuckle:
Title: Re: Question on why do people buy a new bow every year?
Post by: jrebel on January 10, 2012, 12:04:32 PM
Just to clarify....I was refering to all who believe there way of hunting is more worthy than the next guy (reason for using egocentric).  As stated in my first post on this topic, I buy a new bow every 3 years (give or take).   I drive a nice truck, wear nice cloths, have nice gear and work my butt off when hunting.  I probably put more days in affield than most on this forum.   What I don't (or try not to do), is bash others for the way they hunt.  That is the direction I saw this thread going and it rubbed me the wrong way.  Because someone has nice gear does not mean they are not hunters.  Conversely Having old gear (that works) does not make you the Tred Barta of Hunting Washington (unless of course you are Tred).

We preach as hunters we need to be a cohesive group so we can maintain our hunting rights and privelages.  Bashing other hunters and using term such as Gear Queers is not way to do this.   Some call this a joke and I have to dissagree.  Derogatory words is in no way joking.

The original post was a ligitamit question.  After people answered the question the original poster didn't like it and began a "JOKE" that in my opinion was offensive.  That led to people drawing the conclusion that hunters with nice gear are really not hunters....It was a slippery slope that like I said just rubbed me the wrong way.

I appologize if my post was offensive, but I don't appologize for speaking my mind.

Johnny

My first bow is about 10 years old and my son shoots that now. It still shoots very nice. My second PSE bow I got a great deal on as a year old new bow because Cabelas was clearing them out. It is now 6 years old and I still love the way it shoots.

I would love to purchase (or win) a new bow so my son can take mine and we could have a backup (his old one).

And as my post was not intended to be offensive.
I bashed them more for being in camp, drinking and watching a football game during hunting hours, they could have been wearing pink tutu's for all I care, but they laughed at the way I was dressed, I merely responded to their derogatory comment.
I buy new clothes when I can, and clothes do not make a hunter, hunting does.
I never claimed to be Tred Barta, or a superior hunter, just pointing out that gear does not have anything to do with who you are, and has no effect on success, getting out in the woods does.

also there is the comparison of having a full gun safe.   I mean what the difference from buying a 30-06, a caliber than can hunt just about everything and then buying 10 other guns.

This post is too funny. Bottom line is I think some people like to have nice things. This is like saying the guy who dosent wear leaky rubber hip boots is any less of a fisherman than the guy who does. Hell I know people who look like they just jumped out of a simms catalog and they catch more fish in one season than most do in 10. To each their own.

I went through a few bows when I first started. I think its more about finding something perfect for you. I have found the bow that fits me and I now have 2 of them. I even traded a '10 model for an 09 cause I liked it so much.

Too true! Good post!

Huntnnw,, if you are not spending all the $ what do you care? I dont see the new bow buyers saying crap about us old bow owners, so why stir the pot? We all are buying archery tags.

If your walking through camps,  how can you say you hunt harder than someone that is in the woods drawing back?  :twocents:

It takes way more than a guys bow and clothes for me to draw conclusions about what kinda hunter he/she is :twocents:  Hell, depending on the season and year,  anybody could think I was anywhere from a neophyte to a pro :chuckle:

I have shot 6 different bows in the past 15 seasons, I have always upgraded based on MY personal needs and wants. If I wanted the latest and greatest I found away to get it hands down. If I felt it increased my confidence in my equipment, and thus in the field I bought it, no questions asked. I have gone into the field with older equipment that I knew would pull through and was confident in and, conversely I have had the "best" in my hand and not been confident in it at all. The opposite is equally true. The fact remains each and everyone killed. But after analyzing things I realized the simple truth....Hunting season is to short to shoot less than anything I have absolute confidence in. Whether its a brand new bow or old betsy..... The rest is just details.

I use to have a bow like that...sold it and now I have yet to find another.  That is why I am upgrading this year.  I firmly believe that certain bows have good karma.  The bow I sold, a buddy bought and killed an elk his first year bowhunting.  He was sitting in the same stand I killed two elk the previous two years.  I guess if It was going to be anyone besides me, I would want it to be him.....lucky turd.  I hope my next bow has good Karma, along with longer axle to axle.

also there is the comparison of having a full gun safe.   I mean what the difference from buying a 30-06, a caliber than can hunt just about everything and then buying 10 other guns.

for myself I dont like owning guns that I dont use for a purpose.. Pistol for self defense, my magnum for biggame and a small caliber rifle for yotes. Other than that I dont justify owning rifles just cuz

Just my opinion, but I think some people do it because they think they'll automatically become a better shooter.  It could also be a status thing, just like the people that have to go and buy a new snowmobile every year, or a new truck every time the new model comes out.

:yeah:
I have enough difference between the guns and set them up with enough variation, that one is 'better for me' in different situations.  A .250-3000 open sighted lever gun can't easily be interchanged with a long barreled scoped ultra mag.  But yeah, I know more than a few that will have something like 5 or 6 almost identical AR-15s or 1911s.  So, I guess I should ask, how many of the guys that buy lots of new bows use them for different purposes?  An elk bow, a deer bow, yote bow, carp bow, etc.

Heck.....I'd buy a new gun every year if I could.  :chuckle:  I still have the first bow I ever hunted with. It's an old 4 wheel Jennings, 1970 something. My last bow is around 17 years old. Highcountry Sniper. Love that bow and it'll do what I need it to.

It's kind of like kids in a candy shop.  I like the new toys.  If you use them one year and flip just the bow, you aren't really out to much money.  If you flip the entire set up, it will cost you.  I usually buy a new one each season, the only bad thing with the new one is that it is so fast I can't see the arrow fly.  This is where it would be important to have a illuma nock if the state allowed it.  You could see the flight of the arrow.
I get used to it quick as I shoot it almost daily.  There are still those, that only start practiciing a few weeks before season or go out a couple times.  I do the same with rifles.  I still have my original Rem. Mod. 700 in 30-06, but I don't shoot it.  I buy a new rifle every year for some reason.  Last season I picked up the Weatherby .270 Wthy Mag Mark V.  Outfitted it with a Zeiss 4.5-14 with z800 reticle.  This is what I enjoy spending my money on.  Bows, decoys and guns.

I have been hunting with a Switchback XT for I think 6 years now. I am ready to get a new one that shoots a little faster but probably will have to skip it again this year. I shoot it well and it will kill just as good as any bow, I just want a little more speed, this bow is pretty slow so if I guess yardage wrong by 5 yards it could be the difference between killing and wounding an animal, I realize a faster bow will still be the same just slightly less drop than my slow XT

This is why I get a new bow every other year because I can because I enjoy it.  I'm shooting almost every weekend now that 3-ds have started again.  My wife shoots my 4 year old daughter shoots.  We don't go on vacations are vacation is two weeks in elk camp every year.  New bows don't make me a better hunter or shooter I simply enjoy shooting them.

I see it all the same.  I am a Computer Tech - my living for the next 2 years - and one who feels they have to have the latest and greatest, should remember, the second the newest comes off the assembly line, it is no longer the latest, becasue there is a newer one right behind it.

I had a choice, when I came back from Germany - had to leave all my MR (long story) - buy a MR or a bow.  The bow only cost $150 - 65#  Bear with only 6 arrows shot though it - and although I lke the looks of the newer ones, and might like to try one, my Bear shoots better than I do, so I think I'll keep it.  All my MRs are "old" (30-40 Kraig, .303 British Enfield (1945), 8MM Mauser (1952)) and as long as they still shoot better than I do, I have no reason to buy new.  I had thought of getting a Springfield 1903 A3 30.06, but those who have them want a small fortune for them so they can keep them.

For those who have the $$, the desire, or feel the need to buy new every year, every 2 years, or when ever, it is their $$ and, as said on this thread, they are the 'testers' of the equipment.  Their experience and recommendations can, only, improve the equipment design.  This way,, if the time ever comes for me to buy new, I will know that the present design is the result of all of that, previous experience and those, helpful, recommendations to the manufacturers.

Keep on buying and testing, if you can.  It will make my next bow all that much better.  :IBCOOL:

I buy new bows all the time. I just picked up a BRAND NEW Martin Cheetah (tags still hanging on it) in a pawn shop for 150 bucks...New carp fishin bow...I usually watch the paper and will pick up a couple bows a year for 50-75 bucks I then trade/sell them to friends and family for guns and gear. Its a fun hobby Plus I never have an bow shortage emergancy that way.
