does anyone have one or any recommendations on a good bigger caliber AR platform gun. im not opposed to .223 but i think the 7.62 or bigger could be more useful. ive also hear about the 300 blackout and the socom versions. any good manufacturers/builders? mainly looking for fun shooting and for yote hunting and maybe deer or other big game. i hear some are good out to 600+ yrd. just looking for ideas and comments. just started thinking about it. maybe build one up this summer.

Do you want a commercial caliber or a wildcat?
Wildcats you can do sooooooo many different calibers your head will ache for weeks.
Commercial calibers are many and the prices are all over the board, it all depends on how deep your pockets are for the build.
Personally I feel the 243WSSM is one of the finest commercial calibers available for the AR platform but are only offered thru very limited sources. Oly Arms, Dedicated Technologies and AR15 Performance, also Dan Carey. all build exceptional AR's.
The 300 blackout is a newer rendition of the old 300 Whisper, it's main focus is suppressed loads and not conducive to long range shooting.
There is the 6WOA which is available from White Oak Armament that does a great job of getting out there to 400 yards or more accurately.
The 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC are both very popular and will do well out to 300 yards but then the 6.5 Grendel really shines.
The list goes on and on, some have little issues you need to learn to deal with, others work very well but only really excel with longer barrels and so on like the 204Ruger, just use at least a 22 inch barrel and you'll do well.
Oly Arms now offers a new version AR that shoots the 22-250 round, not much for reviews out there yet but the 220-250 is a proud varminter round and has a great following.

Im building a .300 blackout upper. I like that I can use the standard bolt and mags, so Ill save some money, and I have a bunch of .223 brass to make into blackout brass. i would like an oly gamestalker upper in .25wssm but $900 is steep. My blackout upper will cost around $400 including tax and shipping for the various parts.

how far do you want to shoot?

Following this thread.
I always thought a .257 A.I. would make a kick ass AR caliber. Be good out to 400 yards.
-
i would rather an over the counter caliber and im probably only gonna shoot around 250 yards but might be nice to reach out and touch those animals at 400 every once in a while.

If I wanted an AR to shoot 400 yds on game and storebought ammo, Id go with an AR10 in .308. Ammo is alot cheaper than the WSSM calibers

There are lots of great picks out there. I run a 7mm-08 a lot and love it and it works well on anything with a big range of bullets. I am building another 223 and also trying to pick between the 6.8 and the 6.5 grendel. Like FAL said they are alot a like to 300 yards then the grendel eats the 6.8. So i am sure I will go with the 6.5. It has the ballistics and power to take mid sized game to 500 yards in my book. Which is atleast 1800 fps to make most bullets still preform well and 1000 foot pounds of energy.
