Title: Max 1 or Mountain Mimicry?
Post by: atfulldraw on January 15, 2012, 08:49:05 AM
So I have quite the delema, I have used Kings Mountain shadow for the last 4 years and I'm finding it harder and harder to find and the quality has gone down hill. I have the money to buy decent camo and have narrowed the paterns down to max 1 and mountain mimicry but I'm having a hard time picking one. The areas I hunt for elk are at about 5000ft. and composed of heavy alpine timber with some large meddows. I hunt all three types of deer in all kinds of terrain. So which one would be the most versitile? Any help with this would be great. :dunno: :dunno:

I love the look of mountain mimicry! Have you looked  at any of the sitka patterns?

I have looked at sitka and I think that they are to over priced but they do have nice products. I was looking at Core4Element and Cabelas Kryptic gear, if anyone has used these let me know how they are for quality and quietness.

I wear Sitka Optifade but really like the mtn mimicry pattern.  I bought my Dad, step dad, and brother some of the Kryptex stuff in MM for Christmas and it looked/felt like very nice stuff.

I would give it a try!

I hunt elk up on the pacific crest trail, and deer, on the east and west side.

I own both but most of the time I wear Max1 but I hunt mostly the west side but spend some time in the area of the crest.  I mainly wear the MM when I'm hunting more open country. I've tried the Core4 but what I ordered was lighter weight than I like. I will order some of their heavier weight stuff in Max1 this year, keep an eye on Camofire for great deals on Core4 since it's offered in both patterns you like.

Camo fire is what got me interested in Core4Element and the problem is that they offer both patterns, I dont know what to do. :dunno:

Looks like the MM crowd is large. I'll put in my two cents for Max-1.  Most of my elk and deer hunting are on the eastside or in other western states. The sage-mix pattern works really well.   It also works very well in the snow.   Take a piture of your camo in whatever terrain you hunt and then turn it into a black and white photo.  Max-1 in a snowing sage/pine mix is pretty impressive.

We all know that in reality,  movement is way more important and will give you away, long before what you are wearing.    :twocents:

The best I have found for the west side is predators Green Deception.

What your describing as far as your elk terrain I would give the nod to the MM. Max 1 is an awesome pattern as well, and if you were spending alot of time chasing critters on the eastside I would lean that way. But in the darker backgrounds, timber, shadows, etc.... Max 1 is a little to bright for my liking.

I really think the MAX-1 is a good all around camo - I have worn it with confidence from the Pac Crest to the Pac Coast.  It has enough green to work well in the lowlands and up on the slopes.  It's the first pattern I use out of the three main ones I have - Max-1, Realtree AP Green, and Predator Deception Green.  I like the big open pattern for breaking up your form.  I think the dark patterned camo's really show your siloette a lot more.  If you are standing in the shadows, those shadows are going to darken you just as much as the rest of the things around you.  No need to try to be darker than your surroundings. :twocents:

Best pattern I have found in WA state is Predator Spring Green. Predator Green Deception is awesome too and Predator is now making it (green deception)  in a tightly woven light weight micro fleece pant and top. I have both and they are awesome. They wear like iron and dry out very quickly. Tons of great pockets in the pants and light weight. The pattern cannot be beat...unless its later in the season then the Predator Fall Grey is flat unbeatable.

With all the deals on camofire.com I think I might buy both patterns! Has anyone bought Core4Element, is it a quality product?

Wish my sitka was in Max-1. I have MM, it's alright, good if you are in rocks, but I don't like hunting in rocks. Too noisy.

I love my sitka MM 2.0. Infact I like the pattern so much that I'm holding out buying anything else. I've been scooping it up on camofire and ebay for pennies on the dollar since everyone else is switching to the new patterns and KUIU.

Are you asking for fashion sense or utility? Because the animals don't care as long as your profile is broken. They're pretty much color blind. i think the only thing that would stand out is a black double-breasted suit. Don't get one of those. My hunting partner likes to match his camo up. I secretly think it's for him to look at in the mirror.

X2 on the Predator patterns or ASAT.

I have tried Sitka  gear extensively the past 2 years and have found it to be too noisy moving through sage and and thick underbrush on bow hunts.  pants and jacket soaked on a moose hunt in BC. Last year when it rained every day. Not that water proof. IMO.

Very comfortable and dries quickly though.Good barrier in wind but over heated on long hikes.

Decent gear for open area rifle hunts.

I will Stick with wool,  Cabelas micro Tex and fleece and carry light rain gear when needed.

First light and Kuiu good gear to look into and good camo patterns
