Title: big suprise yesterday
Post by: trapperguy22 on January 16, 2012, 09:30:53 AM
so this is a first for me yesterday I got 3 big beavers in one swim through. We weighted them each were right around 50 pounds. the traps was set for two weeks with no action then this yesterday it only had about 3 inches of water in it so the were all alive until we got there. the pictures are not the best but here you go.

I'd like to build me one of those traps.  Looks like the dimensions are 12X18X48, am I correct?   Some advice on the doors would be appreciated also.  I hadn't trapped muskrats in years, but built a few colony traps a few days ago and have been having a blast.  It's like learning to trap all over again.

Wags, yes it is learning to trap all over again, yes that trap is 12x18x48 1x1 welded wire the doors are 17x13 welded 3/8 smooth rod. I also have some that are 16x16x48 both have there place, i think. i have caught more beaver this year in just a 16x16x30 single door trap that i set on the bank with castor in the back works great!!!!!

Wow!!!   Congratulations!
Hope they didn't bite each other too much.
Where did you get the 1" X 1" ?  Did you have to buy a 100' roll?
I had to mend a cage trap, 23" X 18" X ~ 48", collapsible,  that I'd bought on line a couple years ago.  It's caught a couple raccoons at a time, but two weeks ago I think I caught a coyote and it chewed and pulled off the 1/2" hardwear cloth on the back wall and pulled down the rod frame X.   What ever had been in it was gone - no tracks. My husband got me some "cut steel".  Haven't had any customers yet.

Adam,
Just curious what you paid for the wire. I just bought a 100' roll of 1"x2" and paid $234 with the tax. Just trying to compare prices.

bruce,
This was 1x1 wire but it was like 3.50 a foot there is a price break if you buy a whole roll that is what i am going to do this spring. What do you use the 1x2 wire for cats or beaver/otter? I had a otter get out of a aswim through yesterday i have never had that before otter track all over in the snow and the dorr completly busted on the down stream side of the trap. That really sucked!!!

I been useing the 1x2 for the cat traps and the swim throughs. I should add that is the 48" wide and 14 gauge. Haven't had any problems so far.
I'm wondering about the swim throughs for ctter. Seen tracks in the snow where they have detoured around them.
Missed a cat too because a limb broke off and fell down and fouled the door.
Been an unlucky  week for me.

Bruce,
I have caught two otters in that same swim through that i lost that one in the other day. so they do work i just put a dive stick over each end and fence it off, i may be getting some going around them too!!! but with the lack of snow its hard to tell.
