Title: Lets see some boat pics!
Post by: blackhorn on January 17, 2012, 11:32:34 AM
Went to the boat show this last week and the wife gave me the OK to get a 20ft alumaweld stryker.  Still have to order the boat, so would like to see what others have just to get an idea of things to consider when setting it up.  So, post away!

River, lake or salt fishing? That would help if you want some set up ideas.

Went to the boat show this last week and the wife gave me the OK to get a 20ft alumaweld stryker.  Still have to order the boat, so would like to see what others have just to get an idea of things to consider when setting it up.  So, post away!

I've got the 19' Stryker, 2005 version.  My boat is out on the buoy right now but I can take some pics later in the week of various things I've done on it.

One of the best things was moving the red/green lights to the side of the cabin as I travel a lot at night and the glare on the bow was bad.  Also, the stock light mount corroded out after a couple years.  Ours has the bench seat on the driver's side removed which works for us for bins and stuff, but when I fish, it gives me room to put a fish cooler.  The latches on the two bow hatches have corroded and frozen up twice, see if they have a stainless or plastic upgrade.  The joint between the bow window and door has a drip edge but it opens up into the cabin, I put an aluminum bar across which prevents 95% or more of the water from entering the cabin.  If you plan to use it out in the weather, you might see if they have a waterproof zipper upgrade for the canopy as the zippers for the front access panel leak like a seive in a windy rain or when running.  If you plan on fishing much by yourself, try to figure out how to put your kicker, if you have one, on the port side so it counter balances the weight of the driver.  This boat travels more efficiently when there is more weight up front.  I don't know why they do not place the fuel tank much farther forward.  Another thing I did was put a float switch on my bilge pump.

Hope some of this helps.  Feel free to contact me if needed.

If you can afford it, look at the HewesCrafts.  I think they come in 18 and 20' models where the Stryker is 17 and 19'.  The Hewes has a higher sideboard and I think may be built a little more sturdy than the Alumaweld.  I think the cabin is a little farther which gives more working space and helpd move the weight forward.  Of course it will cost more and use more fuel as it is heavier.  The weight rating is 750 lb for the 19' Stryker.  I have had over 2000 pounds in it and it handled it fine (90 hp) as I had to get a load of building materials out here.

I highly recommend a tonneau cover for towing, it not only keeps crap out of your boat but saves fuel on the highway as well.

If you don't mind answering, why have you decided on 20'?

lokidog- I am going to get the upgraded top so hopfully it won't have that issue.  Thanks for the tip on the corroding items.  I looked at the Hews, but just can't quite reach the price point and still be cool with the wife.  I am pushing it as is.

Huntnphool- I choose the 20 because of the extra space and the differance between the 18 and 20 is only $1000 bucks.

I understand the price point deal.  We found ours as a three year old "used" one owned by two guys in a row over 70.  Of course a week later a 21' North River came up at about the samew price point.   :bash:

You definitely do not need over a 90hp with that.  What is the upgraded top?  I've been thinking about building a ply and glass hard top for mine.

Here is my 2008 Weldcraft Maverick.  I have no complaints about Weldcraft, they are made by the same company as Duckworth.  They use some of the thickest aluminum on the market.  It has a true Deep V, which rides very smooth compared to other aluminum boats.  Weldcraft comes standard with a 7’ beam, others you have to custom order.  I did a lot of research before buying my boat.  I looked at Hewes, Alumaweld, North River, and Thunder Jet, before deciding on the Weldcraft.  If I could offer one piece of advise, have your boat outfitted at the time of purchase.  It took me a couple years to set my boat up the way I wanted.  I saved money, but lost a couple fishing seasons out of it.  Alumaweld builds a good boat for the money.

Is the dura frame top and canvas removeable? From the pic the frame looks permanent. If thats the case its really gonna suck on a fishing boat. Takes up way too much room IMO.

With a standard canvas top,at least it can be removed for the 90% of the time its not needed.

With the two motors and batteries and gas tanks there's probably close to or over 500lbs back there. :bash: The E Tec is a little over 300, the Yohnson is 100 then two batteries and 3, 6gal gas tanks, yeow!!! what did you use to polish up the bottom half of the boat? shark hide after? my NWJet needs to look this pretty again.

It makes any aluminum boat look great but its a lot of work! You better think hard and think twice because once you start there is no going back.

First you need to sand it. If you look close at your aluminum you will see tiny lines through it. You must sand out these lines starting with 180 grit and ending around 800, I used a DA palm sander.

From that point the polishing isn't too bad. I started with jewelers rouge, rough cut at first and then with a final polish cut. I can now use liquid or paste polishing compounds and it polishes right up like a aluminum wheel.

I tried Sharkhide when it first came out, actually bought a couple cans of it thinking it would be perfect. At that time the directions had you wipe it on. I found that there was no uniform, good looking way, to apply it and have all the polish work that I had done look good. If you could maybe thin it with acetone or something and spray it you might be able to get a better finished product, for me the hand wiping application completely countered the polish work. It also dulled the shine a little bit. I stipped it all off and have not put any on it since.

My trailer is polished as well. The diamond plate wheel well areas look great once you are done, the only issue is you need to go around each individual diamond, once finished polishing, and clean the black residue from the bottom edge of each one. This quickly became way too much work. I pulled the boat and took the trailer to Line X and had the wheel well areas done, turned out great and adds a little grip when standing on in the rain or after pulling the boat out of the water.

I need to do it a couple times each year to keep it looking good. My problem is I have bunk rails and need to slide the boat back off the trailer, to access the area that are covered by the rails, then crank it back onto the trailer.

 Good luck.

I really want to polish my boat and now would be the best time to get it done.  How did you slide your boat off the bunks?  This seems like it would be a real pain.

I really want to polish my boat and now would be the best time to get it done.  How did you slide your boat off the bunks?  This seems like it would be a real pain.

With the trailer attached to the truck,I put a floor jack under the rear of the boat and lift it a couple inches. Then I unhook the front strap hook from the boat, run the strap under the front of the boat to the first trailer cross member, around the cross member and back up to the boat hook. Crank the strap like you were pulling your boat up onto the trailer except in this case its pulling the boat backwards. I crank it back enough to get to the areas I couldn't access with the bunk rails in the way. Once finished just re route your strap back to normal and crank the boat back onto the trailer.

That was how I did it originally, I have since made a piece that fits on the cross member and utilizes a wheel, so it rolls much easier rather than rubbing on the trailer cross member.

my trialer is custom made and is stout enough to do this, better make sure your cross member can handle it before you try it, you dont want it bending. ;)

Other option is to take it to a marine area that can lift your boat off the trailer and put on stands, this is expensive though.

Here's my boat last summer.  We're headed out crabbing.  Sort of a pain to deal with Foss every time you want to check your traps, but it's worth it.  We have 45 Tons of chicken backs and necks on board and plenty of pots and rigging.  It's nice to be able to have seafood BBQ's on the bow, while Rothchilds gives my wife her afternoon spa treatments.  Thinking about painting it this winter.  All that blue is getting kind of old.  Gotta service the lap pool too.  Good winter projects.    :chuckle:

My thought too.  Plus, if the engines weren't under for too long, I'd think they'd still be cheaper to overhaul than buy new.  My 15 horse went under a couple times last summer on my dinghy, rinsed it, cleaned out the carb, good to go.
