1983. BT doe with and old bear recurve that I bought at yard sale for $10. Had 4 arrows of different size and length. Just had mom at home and decided I was going to teach self to hunt. I've learned a thing or two since then, but is still my fondest memory in field. Took Mr and 11 yr old brother over hour to dress out. Old guy down the road finally grew tired of watching us struggle and came out to finish.

Cool story PT

Big old muley doe, all I have killed is muleys. Never tried whitetails, for some reason they don't have any draw to me.

Spike blacktail...
Grandpa always like to sit up on log landings and fix lunch....he'd say, "you never know what you'll see"...so we pulled up in the bronco, parked at the landing.
He got the stove out and began cooking up some dinty moore stew. I went up ontop a log pile with grandpas shotgun and looked over...to see a mighty black tail spike!
I took aim and fired! Grandpa about jumped out of his skin, since his back was turned and he wasnt expecting a shot!
The shot knocked over the buck and I fired again as he rose, ...off he ran! Fired again and grandpa yelled to stop shooting! ;)
We found the spike about 50 yards into the cut....grandpa walked up and took a shot in the leg from the bucks final kick.
Hit it with two buck shot...one in the heart, one in the lungs. He was with me on my first deer, I was with him on his last deer.
RIP Grandpa!

I was 12 years old when I shot my first deer a little button buck with my bow. I shot that deer with my late uncle Mike. It's a memory of him I'll never forget. It truly is awesome how hunting brings families together and gives you life long memories.

I drank my first Beer the day I killed my first Buck, I hated the taste, I was such a dumb kid. ehh hhhhem...."No Sh!t, there we wuz" I was 13 , Carrying the same rifle my Dad used to shoot his first buck long before I was ever born, It was a Ruger M77 30-06. We had walked from the top of this massive hill down a canyon up and over washed out draws and fingers. It seemed like at least 3 miles (it probably was) Dad and I were walking through a very steep but narrow draw when I noticed a small white patch in the brush not 20yds away and directly across the draw from us. I was convinced it was a deer and dad looked with the binoculars and said "I dont see anything" I looked and noticed the white patch was changing shape. So I said "Im going to go look" I got about 10 feet away from where I had seen it rifle in hand and up pops a little basket rack 4 pt. whitetail. I shouldered the rifle and Bang hit, racked around and BANG hit the engine room. It ran around a bend in the draw heading down hill. I ran around the corner and see him laying down about 50 yds down the draw. I put the crosshairs on his neck and BOOM flop. Rack around and up he goes. put the crosshairs betwixt his shoulder blades and squeezed. He flopped over before he even got to take a step. The only thing I could hear was my Dad Laughing and yelling NICE SHOT JON!. I hit that deer in the lungs 2x in the neck 1x(it would have bled out but I didnt know that) and destroyed 2 vertebrae in his back. the only meat I lost was some in the neck. Dad slung my rifle on his back and coached me through gutting him and then we tied a rope to his antlers and I got to drag my first trophy for another mile to where my Uncle was waiting with the truck. Once we got him loaded I was handed an odd looking soda can from my uncle and he said "welcome to Manhood you earned that one" That was the nastiest tasting soda I have ever had (bud Light) One of the fondest memories from my childhood. Later that day Dad and my Uncle both killed very nice WhiteTails (IMO) What a great day,
My deer is the third from the left. My Dads is the one he was holding. The real nice one is my Uncles and the other small one is a friend of ours who was taking the picture.

Blacktail. I think I was nine way back when I had to use both hands to cock the old Stevens single shot .410/.22 over under. Grandpa drove the '68 Ford pickup in a ditch so dad and I walked down to a farm outside Pe Ell to get a tractor. On the way back a doe stood still in a clear cut long enough for me to put a slug through her chest.
Grandpa tried to ruin my excitement by saying, "Boy, you should have stayed here with me. I had bucks running all around me and all I had was coffee and a pack of Lucky Strikes to shoot at 'em."
Was years before I figured out he was lying.

YEARS AGO! Muley Doe on Rocky Ridge (closed now) Road/Jumpoff Ridge area of the Mission unit on the Colockum
-
3 point BT..... 17 years ago..... I was 11.... 2nd to last day of late modern buck.... Dad and I headed up in the Mashel unit well before daylight.... Hiked in behind a gate toward the top of the mountain about 4 miles..... It was approaching 10 am or so by then and Dad spotted a bedded deer through the old growth about 35 yards..... I took a rest and made sure it was legal.... Dad said it was.... I was too excited to tell.... The 243 barked and I don't ever remember feeling so high in my life while walking up to him and putting my hand's on his chocolate antlers.... We just stared at him for about ten minutes.... Took pics... Ate lunch... Then found out real quick that gutting and carrying a deer that weighed more then me wasn't the cool part.... :chuckle: Will never forget that four mile pack out..... Think we stopped about 30 times....

-
Mine was a muley in the Umtanum back in the mid 80's, still remember it like it was yesterday.
-
Mine was a Blacktail spike in 2005 when I was in 7th grade. I had sprained my ankle 3 days before so i thought my season was over. On the last day of late buck We saw one deer all day, a spike 200 yards away, in a clearcut. I hobbled out of the truck and to the side of the road. trying to keep pressure off my injured ankle and popped him off hand with my dads old .35 Remmington. My dad wanted me to learn to field dress it myself so he went down into the clearcut and drug it up to me and made me clean it. I will never forget that day!
-
Mine was a 4x "basket-rack" palouse whitetail. I grew up in Southern Idaho and with minimal travels, had never really even seen a whitetail. Shot a few more and now I am back to hunting mulies on public land......feels good.

3 point benchleg!

Not surprising that Blacktails are running away with this. Far more people live west of the cascades than east. Most people like to hunt close to home, unless they are on a trophy hunt.
Forgot to post that I took my first with my dad's old 25-35. In fact shot my first two deer with that gun. Wish it was still in the family for my son to use. A friend of dad's found it buried in dirt and gravel at a gravel pit and it was in sad shape. Dad traded him something for it and brought it home and cleaned it up and refinished the stock. Sweet old gun.
-
once again sitka I disagree with you... I hunt close to home and far away from it. The only animals I consider to be trophys are the ones I had to work the hardest for. Some years I feel like chasing mule deer, other years black tail , most years white tail. Does it make me a trophy hunter to try and test myself against all species?

I disagree. I think it has more to do with te westside kids not taking time off of school. If your dad goes on an annual trip to eastern washington to chase mulies for a week your probably not going to get to go with him until you graduate high school. There are not many parents that would be willing to let their kid miss a whole week of school just to go deer hunting. Atleast thats how it was for me. So my first deer was a blacktail. When I started to go with my dad to eastern Washington after I graduated I didn't become a trophy hunter by any means. I was just afforded more time for the trip. :twocents:
-
My parents were pretty understanding.... Got the whole deer and elk season off most years.... Man the packets of homework they would send me off with..... :o
-
Mine was a muley-black...crossbreed. "Benchleg" i think they call it. Better question is how big was your first deer.....mine was a fork x spike. LOL
Shot him in Unit 360 Oct 14,1985. Back then we had 3 full weeks of general season and any buck was legal. Our current EWA seasons are a sham....

So you hunted where? Closer to home.
More reasons to hunt close to home (at least when I was a kid)
Hunt with family. We'd all meet up at my uncle's ranch.
Spend less money. (need less equipment) (Also, when I was a kid, you still had a choice of buying a cheaper license that was good for the county you lived in only instead of a statewide license)
Know the local area better.
Short hunts such as after school or work are more feasible.
Easier to find a hunting partner, especially on short notice.
Sleep in your own bed at night.

First deer was a blacktail buck, taken out Northwest of Timberlakes. 42 yards with a Winchester 94 in .32 Winchester Special.

I guess I should clarify. I'm in disagreement about your reference to people wanting to hunt closer to home unless they are trophy hunting. I as well as many people I know make the trip to eastern washington every year to chase mulies or whitetails and we don't consider ourselves trophy hunters by any means. I didn't go on these trips when I was younger because I couldn't get out of school that long. Not because I wasn't a trophy hunter.

-
Blacktail spike in the Toutle unit in 91, killed a blacktail every year since but the two years I got Mulies. Still no Whitetail.
