Title: looking for buget tanning for coyote pelts
Post by: bear hunter on January 22, 2012, 09:37:30 PM: I was hoping to find a cheaper why to have my coyote pelts tanned. Anyone know where I can send the pelts to.?It costs me 65.00 to 85.00 each. :bash: Its eatting a hole in my pocket :bash: Can I go around a tax... and send it to a tannery my self?

Or, if you want to try it yourself, Cumberland's Northwest Trapper's Supply, www.nwtrappers.com sells bottles of Hide Tanning Formula with how-to instructions.

Disclaimer: I have never dealt with either of these companies or tanned a hide myself. Your mileage may vary.

Post by: Humptulips on January 23, 2012, 12:20:43 AM: Moyles is a great place and I have sent a number of items to them and allways been well satisfied. Usually about 3 to 4 month turn around. i have a cougar hide their now,$135.

You should know however Moyles does garment tanning. The furs come back soft and supple but they will not flesh or turn ears for you or skin paws. They have to be ready to go into the tan solution. If you flesh and dry the furs, turn the ears and skin the paws they will turn out great. If you don't take care of this yourself you will get slips.

Post by: jyerxa on January 23, 2012, 05:58:36 AM: Did you ever think about tanning yourself? I'm no pro by any means, I only made a hat band out of a rattler. My dad did it all start to finish as a hobby. I saw a lot of stuff, but the details are all foggy now.

Turning the ear inside out by working the skin on the back of the ear away from the cartillage.

That's why most deer hides get dumped with the rest of the offal. Unless fur prices are way up, it's not worth it! I trapped and skinned Muskrats when I was a kid, but I doubt the fur buyers were concerned with the tiny heads anyway.

Haven't done it myself, but from what I've read, it's just a matter of turning the ear inside out and CAREFULLY cutting the skin away from the cartilage. The skin is thin, so it has to be a painstaking process. Usually a part of the "fleshing" stage.

I should, depending on what I have loaned out. I will check tonight but they are VHS. What are you most interested in, small mammals, large mammals, skins, rugs, mounts? Many taxidermy supply houses sell instructional videos.

Post by: BLKBEARKLR on January 24, 2012, 08:41:58 AM: this is on a deer, same concept for a coyote, have fun, get mad throw the coyote and make sure you have another one for a back up.... Coyotes are very thin skinned and there fore if you get your fingers up there and use to much pressure it will rip. If you get close to the sides you can blow out the sides of the ears but that is an easy sew job.

Best way to skin a yote is when it is in a semi frozen state, the skin comes off a lot easier and it keeps the smell down some...
