Our crew use to have a few. Good solid dogs. I have always been a big curr and plott fan myself but the walkers we had were great dogs as well.

Get ahold of bearpaw or his son, I bleive they run top notch walkers.  I think they just sold a litter not too long ago.  Also on the BigGame Houndsmen Site there are several walker breeders here in WA and there is a club or two that does field trials and water races.  You can make some great contacts and potential hutning partners.  If you need me to post the website, let me know.

There's nothing wrong with a walker, but if you just want to get a good hound, just be open minded about the breed. We've ran them all and had great dogs and complete failures in every breed. Honestly, the best dogs I've ever been around have been mixed breeds, but that certainly is not a rule, just something to consider. We've had walker/plott mixes that were as good as you could ask for. We've also had a couple pure breds that were as good as you could ask for!

Good Luck

And one more thing... the last couple years I"ve been around a couple Mt. Curs that I am VERY impressed with. My buddy keeps them as indoor "pets" and yet trees bobcats, lions and coons no prob with them. Great family dogs and hard hunting sum-beeotches... I am trying to remember Fred, do you have MT. Curs or Leopard? Or both?

Maverick, Did you get my message? If you have any questions you can email me. She is due this week and I will post pictures when the puppies get here. I will continue to post images as they get older and until they are all sold. Sire is Yadkin' River Bred with multiple championships on his pedigree. Both are wonderful hunters and were very easy to train. We have had blue ticks, black and tans, and walkers and they are all wonderful dogs. Every dog is different at what they like to do. The Sire is a very well rounded hunter while our dam is our trail and strike dog. If you have any other questions please feel free to message me.

Salmon River Copper, you live in a great part of the state.  How's your cat season been this year?  How bad are the wolves in your neck of the woods?  Welcome to the site!!

I like all hound breeds, mines a walker redbone mix. Those two breeds are may favorite, more for their looks and size. They'll all hunt, dont need some prize purebred either. Best dogs my fam has are mixed breeds that you'd have a hard time selling as a pup. And a mix breed really does have less health problems. I'd say anything more then 300 for a pup is well over priced :twocents:

Lots of guys and gals here are itching to come over to your great state and shoot a wolf, so if you can give them some help, maybe we can help Idaho thin a few out for you guys.  ;)

Have you considered Blueticks or black and tans? My opinion of walkers is somewhat jaded as anyone I ever knew that ran dogs never liked them but i have never personally hunted with them. I grew up with blueticks, they are smart, personable, and the ones we had will run whatever you want without running trash with very minimal training. But like i said, my opinion is very biased towards ticks and black and tans. Just thought i would throw some more options in the hat. My top 3 picks in order are Bluetick, Black and tan, and plott.

Well if you drive to Lucile, Idaho and go up cow creek road, you'll then hit iron phone junction and then go out low saddle road (unit 18) there are a ton! Start blasting! :)

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but can one hunt unit 18 effectively w/o a snowmobile?  I'll drive four hours to hunt wolves.

Yeah guys maybe we all need to get together like the catfishing and go wolf hunting. I bet that'd be fun.

Salmon river copper, I'm excited to see those pups!

Ya, its only fun when you aren't surrounded by them!  :o They are kind of creepy and almost made me poop my pants!  :yike: Right now you might be able to go in a 4X4 with chains, but I'm not completely sure. I haven't gone out for two weeks so I don't know what the weather has been doing up there.

There are good dogs in all breads like someone has said... look around your area and talk to hunters there... I have been running hounds for many years... even when you could hunt like a human in the state of WA...   my partner and I are hunting Walkers... good luck...
Title: Re: looking into maybe getting a walker or black and tan hound
Post by: Maverick on December 28, 2012, 05:05:03 PM
So I'm still interested in hounds... I was wanting a tree walker but I'm also interested in a black and tan. Not sure how much different in behavior or how they hunt if theres any difference... What Im wondering now is I can only get one. So how well would one hunt alone for coons? Is it okay to use one hound for cougars in Idaho or is that dangerous? I've never done hound hunting before but it looks like a blast! Also, will either of these hounds be okay if I took him along with a buddy and his hounds?

Sorry I know there's a lit of questions here.... Thanks for any help guys.

I've only hunted with beagles and jack russels, so limited experience compared to some. I've never seen one that wouldn't get straight to hunting after a couple minutes getting to know one another. We frequently hunted rabbits with multiple dogs from multiple homes without problems.

Talk to RoyalTine on here he runs some outstanding Black and Tans.  One dog is fine for coons.  I like at least 2 dogs for cats, one dog has treed plenty of cats, but your just asking for trouble with one dog, IMHO.  I was very particular about who I hunted with.  I would never hunt with someone whos dogs are ill in any way.  Most times a short trip out ona coon hunt and you can see how someones dog works, how they are at the tree.  If they face bark or are growly in any way I do not hunt with those dogs.  Most dogs are fine while hunting, it's usually in the box or at the tree you have to watch, as well as shortly after you shoot something out for them, some dogs get possesive.  I let thme get a little fur in their mouth and then pull them off before they start feeling like it's theirs.

Dogs are the cheapest I have seen them in many years, you can probably get a dog given to you.
