Has anyone else heard that there were 100 cantaloupe captured in Nevada and turned lose near on the rez on the 13th of January? Rumour? :dunno:
-
I wonder when we will be able to apply for a permit for these cantaloupe?
:lol4:
-
why would they capture cantaloupe when you can buy it at the store :chuckle:
-
Damned auto-correct. :chuckle:
-
I wonder what the migration patterns of these CANTALOUPE are. hahah. I assume you meant antelope?
-
:chuckle: :chuckle: I hope it's true, the speed goat part that is, I think we want to be careful with non-native canteloupe. :twocents:
-
what is the boone and crocket requirement for a cantaloupe? :chuckle:
-
You guys are Effed up, making fun of the mentally challenged :bdid:
Maybe he enjoys hunting "cantalope". :bfg: Lets not judge others :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

That is sooo mean... LMAO
-
I have heard the same thing that they let more go and this time it was 100 from nevada as well.
-
I'm glad I brought such joy to my fellow hunt-washington members. You are all very welcome. I blame whole thing on monitors for the spell-check not correcting. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Of the 100 ANTILOPE captured 99 were released. Hope the someday get established, and eventually are in huntable numbers, it would be great to harvest one in Wa.
-
 all in good fun man, thanks for taking a joke and also keeping us informed
-
I hope they captured more and released them...what they need to do for a few years to get a sustainable population going. What they did in the past was dumb and waste of money.
-
Nice to have lope here in WA finally BUT, why on the rez(because there protected more,FOR NOW). Why not split and transplant some for us non-native people to enjoy later in the future. My kids would love to take pictures and look at them if they were here just like many other people here?

They're not going to stay on the reservation, not all of them anyway.

The State would not participate in the re-introduction of them so the Yakama's took it upon themselves to do this for all of us to hopefully enjoy.
Most, if not all, of the previous release have left the rez. Stuff the kids in the truck and head over and go find them. There out there.
-
Some made it to the firing center an some out in the horse heavens an goldendale bickleton an still some up here on the rez too my dad seen them.just about in the timber

My folks saw a little bunch off of 397 last week. Not even close to reservation.
-
I was once attacked by a herd of cantaloupe. When they travel in herds, as stated above, they can be extremely dangerous. I'll never forget that sickening sweet smell and the sugary juice. Ewwww, gives me the willies just remembering it.

397? or 395? i live right off of 397 and was wondering when they would make it here, i've seen them within 7-10 miles of my place last year.
-
Don't they have canteloupe closer to you than 7 miles?

SCI had a big hand in helping fund and organize this project too. :twocents:

That's true. I believe all the Yakamas provided was a place to release the antelope.

Yup, 397. I didn't ask exactly where, south of the river somewhere. Pretty neat.

So if they were released by the tribe(s), that would make them a non-native species, not a game animal right? So if you see one off the rez you can bag it with no tag or license? :dunno:

They are a big game animal. RCW 77.08.030.

They are a native species of this area dating back hundreds of years and they were slowly unable to sustain life here any longer. Just as the Mt. Goats, Bighorns and now they've all been RE-INTRODUCED BACK to this area. There is historical documents showing them thriving here well over hundreds of years ago and the Yakama Nation has been trying to RE-INTRODUCE them here again but had always fallen short due to funding (in steps SCI and a partnership is formed).

Due to weather in Nevada so far there has not been an additional release this year. It has been rescheduled for Feb. 18th, 2012 if the weather cooperates . There has been very little snow down there so they are spread out, making it almost impossible to do a capture. Also the weather needs to be cold so they do not over heat durning the capture and transporting. More than likely if it does not happen this date it will be rescheduled for next year and we were trying to bring in 150 this time.
-
Thats all we need, the WDFW hooking up with the FDA.
-
Has anyone heard whether this is gonna happen tomorrow?
-
THe reason it went through the tribe was because they didn't have to follow the EPA and impact statements and the other 10 feet of bureacracy paperwork and red tape.
-
Well the weather did not cooperate so no capture this year. Everything has been approved for next year so hopefully we will be bring in 150 more, with a strong chance they will be released on public ground this time too.
-
Thanks for the update, that's a bummer for sure.
-
I've came across the gots twice now. First time a small group of 17. Second time it was a larger group, 43 of them. Very cool to see in are area.
-
not a great pic, but it was at 300yrds with a cell phone.

I haven't seen them that bunched up. Was that recent?
-
I have never seen them like that either! Thats pretty cool!
-
The tribal bio's were at our event on Saturday and gave a full update on the antelope. Things are looking good. Sure would have been nice to supplement the existing herd. Need to keep concentrating on coyote harvesting to keep this working. Of coarse they need money and our good ole WDFW hasn't kicked any into the pot yet. So go out and get your moneys worth out of those expensive licenses and shoot some coyotes.

Thanks for the update, hope it works out next year, this is a great project.

This is so very true. Numerous times I have watched a group of 2 or 3 coyotes work an antelope herd. One coyote will run the group in circles while the other coyotes sit waiting for the antelope to pass too closely, then they grab whichever one they can. When one coyote gets tired of chasing he drops out and another coyote chases for a while. Coyotes eat a lot of antelope.

Very cool. What unit were those in? You don't have to tell, but since we can't hunt them yet, though I'd ask. I saw a few last summer that were still on the rez.
-
It looks like the rez to me :dunno: if it's not I don't think they are very far from it.
-
Yes, It was on the Yakama REZ.
-
I saw a handfull of them yesterday about 5 miles outside of Kennewick city limits.
